the older i get the weirder it is that not a single p.e. teacher in my entire school career was able to recognize the difference between âa child who doesnât get enough exerciseâ and âa child with serious health problems impeding their ability to exercise in this particular wayâ
you know what else is weird? we had to do that fitness test every year but like⊠we never actually⊠learned how to do the things they tested us onâŠ
like, now that i am an adult i have learned how to build up my strength so i can do pushups, but that seems like something they could have taught us? in school? in the class where they tested our ability to pushups? they never taught us how to work our way up to actually doing a chin-up, or whatever. even if i had just been âout-of-shapeâ (as a CHILD), nothing they did would have solved that problem. i did not learn how to exercise in a functional way until i was out of school and teaching myself, so iâm not sure what those p.e. classes were even intended to accomplish, really.
people are adding a lot of horror stories to this post that are really similar to mine (exercise-induced asthma, running the mile every friday, coughing nonstop for hours afterward and never actually getting any faster or building up any endurance, fainting at least once and not even getting sent to the nurse) but
to add something to the âreally obvious shit any idiot could have told meâ list
they taught us that the average walking speed should be 3mph, and i consistently tried on treadmills to walk at 3mph, and that always seemed really fucking fast to me and i never understood why

why did grown-ass adults with eyes try to teach my short ass that i should be able to walk an easy mile in 20 minutes

Selective service does not stop trans men from filling out the FAFSA! Trans men are exempted from selective service because theyâre afab. You can fill out the FAFSA if you mark that youâre an exemption. You may need to provide documentation to prove this, but thatâs just a copy of your birth certificate. I am a trans man about to graduate from college who has filled out the FAFSA.
College is already incredibly difficult to afford, especially for trans people! Much of this information is true and important to recognize but please donât spread misinformation about the opportunities we do have.

Itâs really interesting what she says âI canât give you what a man can.â A lot of gay men avoid relationships with bi men because they worry that they canât provide what a woman can. People, gay or straight, think that for a bi person the grass is always greener on the other side.
Straight men and lesbians have said the same. Itâs insecurity rooted in the notion that bi people have all the options constantly at their fingertips AND are insatiable. We donât choose a team, we choose a person. A failure to understand this mostly boils down to people not believing bisexuality is real.

A lot of times when I let kids play on my phone, they go for the drawing app. I watched a girl on the bus write a silly poem about her friends and then laugh as she made Siri read it I hear children say to their friends âhey, FaceTime me laterâ because they still want to talk face to face even when theyâre far away. I see kids sitting, who would feel lonely and ignored if it werenât for the fact that theyâre texting their friends who are far away. Children still climb trees. They might just take a selfie from the top to show off how high theyâve gotten. They can immediately read the next book of their favorite series on their Kindles. Most kids would still be up for a game of cops and robbers. Or maybe theyâd google rules to another game they havenât played yet. When children wonder why the sky is blue, they donât get an exasperated âI donât knowâ from tired adults. They can go on Wikipedia and read about light waves and our atmosphere. They show off the elaborate buildings they created on Minecraft.
Technology isnât ruining childhoods, itâs enhancing them.
Love this post so much to counteract much of the pessimism surrounding technology and kids. Itâs not stealing kidsâ innocence, just another means of expressing it. And so often do I hear that all kids do these days is âplay on their phonesâ instead of doing other things, itâs starting to sound like a broken record. >.>
Heck, it reminds me of the first time our family got a computer; sure, I was on it all the time, but it afforded me a chance to talk more often with my best friend at the time. It filled in that boredom that would have otherwise been filled with TV and made me curious about the world.

Everyone going shopping on Black Friday, be aware of three things:
The retail workers are working 12 hours shifts. We are threatened with losing our jobs if we donât show up unless weâre dying in the hospital. I had an assistant manager show up with fucking strep because he wouldâve been fired otherwise. Yes, he did infect 7 and hospitalize 2 coworkers; who knows how many members of the public he infected.
The stores have, maybe, 5 of that special cheap thing youâre after. Corporate does this on purpose, and stores are not allowed to order enough. The prices arenât even that much lower. They lie about how expensive something is to fool you into thinking youâre getting a discount. You arenât.
Most of the workers you will come across will be new hires for the sole purpose of being bodies for about three months before theyâre fired. They actually donât know anything because theyâve been working there for maybe two weeks, and have had no real training. I was once hired at Staples a week before Black Friday and expected to know how to deal with phones, coupons, the online ordering site, and AS400 after five 6-hour shifts. This is the kind of person you will likely be dealing with at Black Friday.
Do me and my retail family a favor and donât shop Black Friday. Any company that needs a sale day like Black Friday to get their sales out of the red doesnât deserve to be in business.Â
This also goes for anyone that works shipment too. Weâre suddenly expected to stay as late as they want you to even if they know you donât have a car and rely on a ride to get you to and from work and know you canât stay late. Shipment workers will suddenly start getting berated for not getting things done and it is by far the most stressful time to be a shipment worker for any store. Especially when they throw in new hires that donât know how to process things and are expected to work at the same pace as the people that have worked there for a while.
Retail is shit around the holidays, especially Black Friday
