As a feminist gay man, I’m looking at the appropriate route to de- centering men and prioritizing women. It’s made complicated by the reality that men are so involved in a gay man’s life. So for the sake of discussion, is something like celibacy a necessary part of de- centering men and then turning our focus to women’s issues?!

Byler is based in misogyny. You have three characters: Will, El, and Mike. To put Will and Mike together, you remove the one girl from the occasion, creating a story where Mike chooses another male over his girlfriend. Then there’s Will “I don’t like girls” Byers, who acts like El is a sister to him while he’s pining for her man… which is problematic in itself, even if Mike and El weren’t dating, because Will is out here choosing other guys over girls.

All things aside, it must be a nice change of pace for Noah Schnapp for people to be talking about problematic Stranger Things actors and it not be remotely about him for a change.

as much as i love the byler community (and stranger things fandom) i really think some of you are too fucking parasocial and need to take a step back

i’m not gonna sit here and say that snl was funny/the some of the skits weren’t uncomfortable but that in no way shape or form warrants death threats, homophobia allegations, and attacking finn wolfhard, caleb mclaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo

let’s not make this into a bigger deal than it needs to be

Excellent take.

I too am unhappy with snl; it wasn’t funny and the coming out skit was in very poor taste. I said the night of I’m unhappy it was all chalked up to comedy.

Queerbaiting is serious and it certainly is not funny.

But Finn, Gaten, and Caleb aren’t writers. They aren’t bad people and they have shown nothing but support in the past for the lgbt community. Even if you’re upset that they said yes to preforming the skits, that never justifies harassment.

Be better than the awful homophobic people who tell the cast to kill themselves for showing support to the community.

We are much better than this.

I say this as a queer person, but that skit wasn’t as bad as people make it out to be. It was a commentary on how poorly written the coming out scene was, something the fandom itself has been complaining about since that episode came out, only now they want to pretend like they weren’t. SNL didn’t say anything as far as Will’s coming out scene that the fandom itself wasn’t saying.

And just so we’re plain, these folks’ idea of antisemitism is anyone who hints at maybe Israel shouldn’t be slaughtering innocent Palestinians and taking their land. You’ll find few queer people who hate Jews that don’t stand with an oppressive, genocidal regime. Queer people tend to have quite a negative history with those sorts of governments.
