Evarts Cairn

Location: Evarts, Alberta

This cairn is just outside Evarts, and so I didn't tag the location particularly carefully. Perhaps it's actually in Evarts - the "village" itself now consists of only three or four houses, and so it's kind of hard to tell where exactly its bounds are supposed to lie. It's kind of an interesting place to visit, how all the local signage (and even google maps) points it out like it's a proper town, but when you go there, it's just nothing. I wouldn't recommend staying there; I felt kinda weird even getting out of my car to take these photos. I think one of the residents saw me, which made me feel pretty awkward. I might have even rushed the photo set because of that.

As you can kinda see in the one photo, the cairn itself is pretty hidden. It's right next to a tree which is pretty overgrown. With the "village" being basically nonexistent, I don't know who would be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of these kinds of things. I don't know what the best solution would be; I feel bad suggesting even pruning it, but as is the cairn is very hard to see from the road. A signpost seems a little redundant but might be the best solution.

The cairn itself is fairly large. More interestingly, it has plaques on all four sides, with one of the sides even having a map with handwritten annotations as opposed to the usual typesetting. I didn't really do a good job at capturing how the four sides are laid out, but hopefully everything's easy enough to read as is. This was the hardest of the cairns to get to but probably the most rewarding. There's a wikipedia article on the town which goes over a lot of the history, although some of it is on the cairn too.

Marianne Cairn

Location: 2034 Township Rd 382, Red Deer County, AB T4E 2T7

This cairn is next to the Sylvan Lake Apostolic Lutheran Church, and has a unique tryptych structure. Photos of each plaque below.

Only the left cairn has actual historic text, which I will transcribe here: The Bertheuson Story In 1896, Norwegian immigrants, Peter and Marianne Bertheuson were the first pioneers to settle in this district. The S.E. 14-38-2-W5 was chosen because of the large sloughs which would provide a sure supply of water for their livestock. The school district, *2161 was formed in 1910 and named in honor of Marianne. Peter passed away in 1936 at the age of 66 years. Marianne passed away in 1958 at the age of 83 years. They raised 4 children. Mike, born in 1897, was the only one that remained here for his entire life. He farmed until his passing in 1983. Mary (Bertheuson) Doran, born in 1895, returned with her husband Andy, to farm in 1937. She taught in the Marianne School from 1942-1951. Mary passed away in 1956 while residing at Marianne. Petra (Bertheuson) Huget, 1904-1974, lived at Red Deer. Ole, 1906-1986, lived at Calgary.

Ridgewood Cairn

Location: Township Rd 372, Red Deer County, AB T4S 2B1; Just east of Range Road 10

This cairn is a little ways away from Ridgewood Hall, but otherwise seems to have no marking whatsoever. It's not in direct eyeshot of the hall, and I didn't see any signs pointing it out. It's the smallest of the cairns by far, and pretty far from the road; I actually didn't see it until it was too late the first time, and had to turn around.

Stephan G. Stephansson Monument

Location: 109 Creamery Way, Markerville, AB T4E 2V3

This cairn is in a clearing with a direct eyeline to the Markerville campground. There's nothing else in the clearing, which gives it a weirdly foreboding vibe. I'll add a transcription of the English version of the plaque text in a reply, and I can transcribe the French and Icelandic translations if there's any interest.

Stephan G. Stephansson

1853-1927

Born in Iceland, Stephansson emigrated to the United States in 1873, then moved to Canada, settling near Innisfail, Alberta, in 1889. Ten years later, having endured the hardships of the pioneer and having won respect for his service to the community, he published his first volumen of poetry in Reykjavik, Iceland. Between 1900 and 1920 six additional volumes were published. Self-educated, he mastered all the Scandinavian literatures, and critics said of him that he was "unsurpassed by any other Icelandic poet since the Middle Ages". He died on his Alberta farm.
