Jules Émile Planchon, French botanist who headed the botany department at Montpellier University when the phylloxera plague began killing off French grapevines. In collaboration with Pierre-Marie-Alexis Millardet and the American Charles Valentine Riley, he discovered that grafting imported American grape rootstock onto French vines made the vines resistant to the organism spreading the plague.
