Cold Summer – Fight To Survive EP

Cold Summer, the growing champions of industrial-tinged, atmosphere heavy hardcore from Leeds have been hard at work channeling a strong DIY work ethic into a dynamic new release, the ‘Fight To Survive’ EP.

The band’s third EP, following on from ‘Transitions’ and ‘Wake’, as well as 2013’s self-titled album, ‘Fight To Survive’ arrives as a more refined affair. A collection of five new epics including the stellar ‘A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire’, the EP progresses quickly from an atmospheric deliverance to growling, anthemic juggernauts of heavy rock sound and dynamic hardcore spirit.

A standout release, and a cumulative look through the various progression of the band since their formation, ‘Fight To Survive’ is a brash balance of Cold Summer’s invigorating live show and their meticulous recording sessions. It’s lively, without ever losing its form, and with every crashing step and thunderous chord Cold Summer manage to reveal something new, etching personal, emotive flourishes into behemoth cuts of sound.

‘Fight To Survive’ is an EP that ultimately demands to be heard, and from the moment those first tones spark into life, there’s really no stopping it. Turn it on, turn it up, then dig in for a torrential assault of evocative, deafening, and brilliant sound.

Artist Spotlight: Cold Summer

Cold Summer, the post-hardcore quartet from Leeds, are the focus of our latest Artist Spotlight! Forming in 2011, the band have self-produced and released two EP’s, and one self-titled, full length album. Their strong work ethic shows with each release and self-booked tour they embark on, and proves that hard work and determination go a long way. This kind of mentality has led to support slots with diverse and established artists such as Funeral For A Friend, Polar, Self Defense Family, Lemuria, Milk Teeth, Brawlers and recently Grieved & Employed To Serve.

After finishing a tour with He Is Legend in 2014, the band began writing an extremely personal new EP, called Fight To Survive. When asked about the writing and recording process for their new EP, the band stated that  “Compared to previous releases, we certainly spent a lot more time on writing these songs, revisiting but refining ideas as we went along and certainly exploring new ground.  We’ve always really been, in our eyes, a fairly well-prepared band for recording sessions but, we took that experience a lot further this time around, to really get to know each others parts as well as our own.”

On April 1st, Cold Summer shared the results of this exploration with the world with the release of Fight To Survive. Playlist: The Best of Funeral For A Friend

This month, Welsh post-hardcore band Funeral For A Friend bid farewell as they embark on a farewell tour which sees them hitting up major UK cities where they will perform their two most celebrated albums; 2003s ‘Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation’ and 2005s 'Hours.’

So after 15 years, seven albums, eight EPs and 14 members, Funeral For A Friend are soon to be no more. Nevertheless their influence will remain for years to come.

To celebrate their legacy, we asked a variety of bands to pick their favourite FFAF songs and to share their memories of the Bridgend band. We also find out how they have influenced an array of current and emerging bands.

This Year’s Most Open Heartbreak

Jake Murray (Beaumont) My favourite FFAF song has to be 'This Year’s Most Open Heartbreak’. That intro riff sounded just enough like Maiden to drag me in when I was younger, then get hit with this heavy riff out of nowhere, I loved it. One of those classic songs that just sums up that sort of scene Funeral were part of in one. Funeral always remind me of more carefree times in school, getting drunk off of cheap cider in a park on the weekends. A nostalgia trip every time I listen to them.

Benji Fletcher (Day Old Hate) This song was the first song I heard by them, I must have been about 12 years old and I was just blown away. I think it was on Scuzz back in the day, the guitar work was just amazing, I’d never heard anything like it. The duelling guitars were absolutely mesmerising for a kid who had only really listened to Linkin Park and Papa Roach. I think this was the song that made me want to be in a band and play guitar, just pure awesomeness!

Kev Williams (Calling Apollo) I remember watching the now defunct Welsh music show The Pop Factory and saw this band play this song. It just instantly blew my mind! It was the kind of music I was looking for, even though I didn’t even know what it would sound like. Unfortunately I didn’t catch the bands name and did hear it again for about 4 months. But when I found it again, it was the beginning of a 12 year-borderline obsession for me.

Already Heard Video Premiere: Cold Summer - Bear Eats Wolf

We’ve been fans of Leeds’ four-piece Cold Summer for quite some time. We previously premiered their video for ‘A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire’ last month, and now as they closer to the release of 'Fight To Survive,’ we’ve teamed up with the band once again to give you the exclusive first play of 'Bear Eats Wolf’.

Like the bands previous material, 'Bear Eats Wolf’ serves as another solid, tight knit slice of melodic post-hardcore with venom-filled vocals from Dan Feast dominating against tribal-like drums and stringent guitars.

Lyrically it touches on issues of anxiety and depression, especially the experieces of Feast. The band hopes listeners can relate to his experieces as it gives off a positive message about overcoming the negative state of mind often brought about when suffering from anxiety. Here’s what Dan had to say about the song:

“The wolf is a symbol of the negative state of mind, a powerful and determined animal that can’t be outrun and is hard to overcome, whereas the bear emphasises the strength that needs to be found to overcome the troubles caused by the wolf.”

Drummer Justin Eastwood also shared the following comments about the track:

“Musically its one of the "heavier tracks” on the EP. Beginning with an ethereal post-rock influenced introduction it leads to darker territory that reflects in the subject matter of the song.

Since forming in 2011, Leeds’ four-piece Cold Summer have been honing their brand of experimental melodic rock. With two EP’s to their name so far, the quartet ended 2014 touring with U.S. stoner rockers He Is Legend. Since then they’ve been balancing their time between writing new material and commitments outside of the band. Now after some time away, Cold Summer are set to return in April with ‘Fight To Survive’. Their third EP is their most focused effort to date. Today Already Heard is hosting the exclusive video premiere for 'A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire’.

The first single from the EP proves to be a fierce, melodic slice of post-hardcore as the band, made up of vocalist Dan Feast - Vocals, guitarist Chris Harrison, bassist Chris Hepworth and drummer Justin Eastwood, take on the evasive world of the music industry. With their continuous DIY approach, Cold Summer provide an intriguing message on 'A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire’.
