Sundae experienced multiple kinds of oppression, even when she was still in the closet. Being black and the daughter of poor mexican inmigrants in rural Texas did not make her life any better, in fact it probably made her discovery worse. Isolation was a concept already known to her, and being 27 with a trembling roof over her head just made her crave freedom like some kind of deathwish. Not just freedom of the soul, but freedom of being herself, to stare in the mirror and see herself staring back with love and admiration. By the end of the year she left town, illegaly jumping from train to train until she was at the big city. By her mid 30s she started to present more freely, and introduce herself as Sundae with no shame or hesitation. She may not have the huge perfect "cispassing" one would desire, and trust me that does bring oppression and issues to her plate, but now with her girlfriend and son by her side she feels at peace and extremely loved. There was risk, there was danger, and there is regret in her choices all along the way, but the result? She couldn't be happier, because she is as strong as she is beautiful, and now she knows it.

And so am I, and every trans person out there in the world but thinks its over. You are not alone, WE arent alone. You are as strong as you are beautiful, and someday? Someday that strength and beauty will smile back at you in the mirror. Just let the tulips settle, your spring is coming and they will bloom.
