//After she sees that Illyria is eating, she goes back upstairs.//
How is she?
“She’s doing better, I think. Nether’s presence seems to be helping a lot.”
//Mallory nods.//
They’re very close. Ah....what is the word...kindred. They are kindred souls.
//She looks a little unsure if she got that right or not, but Isa nods in understanding.//
And...I remembered something. One of Creek’s friends...I was supposed to meet up with her and then this happened. I should go tell her.
“Mmm...She should probably know. Illyria has Nether to watch over her...I should probably go with you.”
I can handle it.
//Indignantly, she tries to stand, but the searing pain in her gut makes her rethink her decision.//
...Okay. You probably should come.
//Isa helps her up.//
“You all are so stubborn sometimes. Now, you’re going to have to give me directions.”
“Everything okay, hun?”
Mallory looks up from where she was fiddling with a Rubiks Cube she had found. She wasn’t exactly sure whatshe was supposed to do, but it offered some sort of distraction.
She sighs as Isa sits down next to her. “Why did Creek do that? I don’t understand.”
“I know things aren’t exactly like that for you back home, but here, things are different. She didn’t want you to die for her. She didn’t want anyone hurt because of her.”
“But...that’s what I do. I help people. I knew the risks. Why was my life any more important than hers?” Isa can see the tears forming in Mallory’s eyes and her heart breaks. “Creek...there was no reason for her to do that. She didn’t...she shouldn’t have died for me. I don’t understand...”
“Oh hun, I know. Not everyone sees it that way. Your people understand death differently.” She wraps an arm around Mallory and pulls her closer. “It’s hard to explain, but I think you will understand the longer you’re around these people.”
“She did that because of me...everything I did...and I didn’t even help her.”
“Of course you did. You freed her from that shrika. You helped her see her friends again. Without you, that shrika would still be tormenting people.”
Mallory shakes her head. “I don’t think I’ll ever understand why someone would risk so much for me when this what I am meant to do. My death means nothing.”
She runs a hand across Mallory’s back comfortingly. “It’s okay, Lucent. It’s okay to feel that way. Did talking about it help?”
Mal shrugs and wipes away her tears. “Not in explaining...but it felt nice to have someone to tell it to.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t explain it better. But venting is always good. Now, do you think you can handle some food? I’m going to go see what I can scrounge up for a meal.”
“Yeah...that sounds nice. Thank you.”
“Of course, hun.” Isa rises, and gives Mallory a gentle smile before going into the kitchen to start prepping some food.
-I’ll go talk to her.-
“Thank you.”
Hopefully she’ll listen to you. You are the closest one she has now.
//Illyria doesn't respond. She just turns and bows her head again, resuming her vigil.//
//Isa gazes at her in dismay, then goes upstairs to join the others.//
“We can give her a proper funeral and stuff later.”
//Mallory looks up at her from her new spot on the couch.//
Is Illyria okay?
“To be honest...she’s not taking it well. She refuses to leave Creek. I’m worried about her.”
//Illyria jumps up on the bed and settles herself.// *I stay with her.* //She fixes Isa with her good eye, daring her to disagree.//
//Isa sighs.//
“Okay…you can stay here for now. But eventually, you need to go be with the others. It helps, I promise.”
//She hesitates, then finally nods, allowing Isa near the body.//
//Isa strips the bedspread off the bed and wraps Creek in it, then lays her on the bed.//
“There we are…now, we should go join the others upstairs.”
//Illyria turns to glare at her, and snaps at her.// *I am not leaving her side.*
“Then at least let me move her to the bed and cover her up.”
//Illyria hasn't moved, and makes no indication that she heard what Isa said.//
“Illyria?”
//Isa crouches down next to the bird.//
“Illyria, come on. Let’s get you upstairs with the others.”
-Of course.- //His magic is at the ready to lift her if need be.//
“Thank you.”
//She helps Mallory over to where Nether is.//
“Don’t do anything stupid, okay hun? We don’t need anymore injuries.”
I don’t make guarantees that I can’t keep. I’ll try my best.
-I’m staying here. Stirillia, go on back to the house with... her.- //The drake sighs, obeying his father’s request.//
“Nether, was it? Could you help Mallory up the stairs? Don’t want her pulling those stitches.”
//Mallory looks up as Isa comes down the stairs. Isa spots her and immediately rushes over. She forces Mallory to sit back down.//
“Lucent! You had me worried, hun.”
//Carefully, she gives the dumbfounded Mallory a hug.//
...Isa? Why are you here?
“One of your friends called me. You landed yourself in a coma.”
//Mallory looks a little sheepish as she returns the hug.//
Oh right...that.
“Just don’t do that again. Now, everything feeling okay?”
//Isa fusses over Mallory for a little longer, then turns to the others.//
“I can take care of Creek. You all can go upstairs if you want.”
Ah, ok, thanks.
“Take care of yourself, okay?”
//She goes back inside and goes downstairs.//
Ok. I think I’ll see Neb in person, she’s not responding... and Isa? Thanks. For... everything.
“Of course, hun. It’s what I do.”
//She gets up to leave, then remembers something. She hands Margin a slip of paper.//
“I wrote down Mallory and I’s phone numbers. If you ever need any help, I’m just a call away.”
O-ok. I’ll send a message to Neb, tell her to come by.
“Okay. I can’t really offer any more comfort than this, since I’m just a newcomer here. Being around friends may be a good idea.”
//She sits for a while longer.//
“I should probably go back inside and check on Mallory and the others. When you’re ready to come back inside, I suggest that you avoid the basement unless you are absolutely sure you can handle it.”
**She sniffs again.** That-That’s something, at least. If she needs a head to stay in I’ll be...
“She won’t be needing that. I’m not sure how she did it, but after Chaos...well, after that, somehow she managed to manifest in this world without a host. It takes an exceptionally powerful shrika to do that...or an extremely upset one.”
