This question is being asked with Nightheart in mind but it could apply to any other character:

What do you think about people who dislike a character at the beginning so much that they choose not to read their chapters and then pretend like that character has stayed the same throughout the rest of their story? I think it's weird that people will give their opinion on a character while openly admitting that they haven't read the books.

I think they are depriving themselves of a good story and very much intended character development. In Nightheart’s case it was always going to be his arc that he would mellow out.

Not only that but you do not get the overall story that is trying to be told. For example you can’t have a starless clan without Nightheart. It isn’t the same story without him. Flamepaw isn’t the same cat that offered such solace and kinship to Frostpaw in a time that she needed it most during Thunder.

I understand not liking a character initially but I think they should always be given a chance, character development is the backbone of many stories and I think it is unfortunate to automatically assume that the same wouldn’t be applied in warrior cats.

it drives me crazy how the fandom ignores everything about shadowsight's biography pre-tbc and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his childhood because a lot of people assess his character as if he was completely normal and accepted by his clan before ashfur and that's just not the case at all

shadowsight very much did not have a typical clancat upbringing. he was halfclan, and his litter was born in an abandoned twoleg structure overseen by a group of loners after both his parents fled their respective clans without notice. he would know the guardians and their way of life before he knew the clans. he was introduced into the clans during a period where shadowclan was recovering from a state of near-collapse. tigerheart had not told anyone about his relationship with dovewing; shadowkit and his siblings were a surprise to his clanmates.

he wasn't like other kits his age. he said strange things and had strange interests. he demonstrated a natural sixth sense, and his parents understood this as the mark of a future medicine cat. he was epileptic, and suffered from violent seizures that would often frighten the cats around him. during one particularly bad string of episodes he claimed to be having nightmares of drowning, culminating in him throwing himself into a nearby river, an event that all the clans became involved in. shadowkit said he did it because starclan sent him an omen that the clans would unite to save a kit, but the resulting death of juniperclaw left a poor impression on the rest of the clans, which would clearly effect how he was treated.

there's so many other important details from shadowsight's childhood not covered here that contextualize his character in tbc and i think everyone should go back and read tigerheart's shadow/raging storm/tawnypelt's clan just for him if nothing else. but the basic point i'm getting at is that shadowsight has always been in a position of social disadvantage, for being halfclan, for being mentally ill and disabled, for just in general existing in a way that isn't "normal." it is for these reasons specifically that the clans were so quick to latch onto him as a scapegoat. this is a factor i think get overlooked when people compare bristlefrost and shadowsight, that he has always been an other in ways bristlefrost has not, which is interesting when you think about how little trouble bristlefrost had earning forgiveness despite the much more willing role she played enforcing the imposter's agenda.

it's why it also annoys me how the fandom has latched onto mothwing's bullshit notion that ashfur has been ~grooming shadowsight since he was young~ (what part of ashfur's master plan had to do with that whole thing with the tribe exactly) because it suggests that the gulf between shadowsight and his clan is entirely from ashfur's involvement thus absolving the clans of any accountability in the matter, and now that he's gone shadowsight ~can heal~ as if every other social issue that displaced him just dissipated entirely with the death of one evil guy. considering a big plot point in the following arc was berryheart inciting stigma towards interclan relations that obviously was not what happened lol
