I’m watching Infinity War again, and I just realized.

When Strange tells Tony “there was no other way” it wasn’t because everyone was disappearing, nor because they lost.

It was because he had seen what was about to happen:

                 Peter Parker, fighting to stay alive, pleading to Tony. a desperate child, scared because he knew that he was dying as he kept repeating that he didn’t want to go.

Strange had seen this, and the pain it was about to cause to Tony Stark, and the “there was no other way” was an apology.
