“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I know we were supposed to have lunch and all that but there…something. Something happened at my therapist’s office and I-I got caught up in it all.” Sledge took her hands. “I’m really sorry. I really, honestly didn’t mean to leave you hanging.”

“I don’t like admitting it. Not only am I a felon but I’m a freak too.” He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He was starting to grow it out again. Sledge smiled and pretended to shrug it off even though it bothered him. He didn’t remember his episodes and was worried he might scare Kat away if Poe came out.

“You’re not a freak. You’re not normal but that’s great because normal is boring. If you still consider yourself a freak then i guess I’m a freak too considering all that I’ve done as well and if that’s the case...then we’ll be freaks together.” She offered a small smile, hoping to life his mood a bit.

“No, she’s court appointed so I gotta continue seeing her. Plus she’s the one I saw when I was much younger too. She’s knows me well. It’s okay. I can continue to see her.” He gave a gentle smile. l just had no idea that Poe was still around.“

“Okay...just let me know if you need anything, alright? I’ll always be here even if Poe comes out again. I know it’s hard to talk about so I won’t push you but I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

“What happened?” She immediately calmed down, her tone suddenly laced with concern. She hated seeing him in pain. “Don’t worry about that. Is everything alright?”

“Find someone who will give me work. That’s a must and that’s pretty much it. I mean there are some things I have about locked doors or being trapped. I’ll wanna be outside a lot and go wherever I want whenever I wanna go. But other than a job you’re all I want.”

“Well I’ll be here every step of the way. If that means keeping all of our doors unlocked and taking the doors off the closets then so be it.” A smile graced her features once again. “As for a job, there’s always places looking to hire people we just have to look. Now, all that’s left is to go see your parents finally.”

“Don’t be sorry. It could have been worse. I could be dead or worse.” He sighed. “I consider what I went through a fitting punishment to what I did to those firefighters. I’ve forgiven myself, I had to or I was gonna go nuts.”

“I’m glad you’ve forgiven yourself, I just wish I could do the same.” She grew silent for a little bit after that. “So do you have any specifics in mind about what it is you wish to do now that you’re out?”

“Yeah sometimes. Petrov couldn’t do all the dirty work by himself. I had to help at times and they threw me in solitary for it but never for very long.” Sledge shrugged.

Katerina insrintively tightenend her grip on his hand, not painfully so just as a way of trying to comfort him. "I'm sorry you had to grow through that...I'm sorry you were alone."

“Hey, hey it’s okay. Oskar was insane okay? We was schizophrenic it’s not his fault. He was seeing shit. He was a cool guy when he was lucid. You would have liked him.” He took one hand of hers off the wheel and kissed it. “Please don’t be mad. I was recovering when you came and the guard told you I was in solitary for fighting. I didn’t want you to worry.”

She felt herself relax feeling her hand in his. "I was worried regardless, but were you ever actually in solitary?" She feared how that would affect him.

“I dunno. They were never opposed to tattoos and all that and it has been ten years. They will probably speak in Czech so don’t be frustrated if you can’t understand.”

“That’s good at least, besides I think they’ll just be happy you’re out. If that happens at least I’ll know how you feel when I speak Russian to someone.”

“Well, I’ve learned Russian thanks to my tail in prison. Your friend knows it well and he taught me and there is nothing to do twenty-three hours a day so between working out and getting tattooed I read. I also speak conversational French and a bit of Swedish. The Swede was actually crazy but no one believed it. I went to ask him for lessons on day and…” He pulled up his shirt to show three stab wounds in his left side. “Yeah that wasn’t fun but he told the greatest stories. He was moved to an institution.”

Katerina could only briefly glance at the scars, keeping her eyes on the road to avoid an accident. "Bastard is lucky my little friend isn't already serving a life sentence or he would've left in a body bag." Knowing he had been hurt so badly infuriated her. It showed from her squeezing the wheel so tight her knuckles had begun to turn white.

“Nothing could ever replace you, babe. Don’t worry. A dog has claws and can’t cuddle back because I may want to be the small spoon sometimes.”

“I want a Jack Russell or something. Not a tiny dog.” Sledge laughed. “I would like a golden retriever maybe. Something smart or something small enough to cuddle with I dunno. We should go to a shelter and see who we can find.”

"Aw you going to replace me with a dog? And here I thought my cuddles were enough." She fiend hurt before a bright smile came along. "We can definitely go looking for a dog to adopt."

He chuckled. If he ever self-destructed it would be straight to suicide. He didn’t touch drugs or alcohol even after all this time he still never drank or snorted anything in prison. He got tattoos though. “I need to fill these in with color.” He had a bunch of shapes outlines but hadn’t wanted all black and grey that were the traditional prison style.

"Well, a friend of mind does tattoos, he may be able to help you out. How long did it take you to finish them?" She had noticed them over the years, she never got a chance to see just how many he got or which were a work in progress.

“I was plaugued with a guilty conscious. You shouldn’t have let me spoil your fun.” He teased. “In all serious I think this was best for both of us. We were pretty self-destructive. I’m glad we’re both on the right track though.” He smiled. “I still love you and you’ve been loyal and committed and I love you for that. I know I can count on you.”

"Well be a mercenary wasn't exactly something fun but it's not something I'll ever forget. How could I not remain loyal? You're the love of my life and now that you're out, I'm going to help you and make sure you don't self-destruct."

“Well, it’s been ten years since I’ve seen another woman and I’m still a virgin at twenty-seven. When we get home I think me being bold will be the least of your worries.” He raised an eyebrow suggestively and smiled. “Besides that, even if you had continued as a merc you’d still be alive. You were too badass to have died in that line of work.”

“Really? You have no idea what you,re in for with me. I wouldn’t suggest you growing accustomed to saying that.” She smirked. After a moment her smirk had fallen, a saddened look took it’s place. “Well after they took you away, I had fallen into a really dark place, even after I visited you for the first time. It killed me to think I’d have to continue on a life without you for a decade. You gave me a reason to keep on going, I can never thank you enough for that.”

Sledge smiled. “I didn’t even do anything but you’re welcome.” He couldn’t believe that in the few short months they had known each other that he had inspired such change in her as she had in him. He hadn’t killed himself or let himself be killed in prison because he knew she was on the outside. That she was waiting for him.

When you went it, I couldn't keep on with my...'career', not knowing you gave up ten years to pay for the same thing I was being paid for. You inspired me to change, you saved my life and for that I will always remain grateful."
