Ok, but this makes so much more sense. I mean, for a YOUNG, VIGOROUS Hodge to feel trapped in the Institute, wasting his life between shelves of books and plants.

A young man not being able to live his life. To even dream of someday having a family. Living at like 18, with a young couple with small children and on the brink of divorce (as Isabelle told Simon), the only visit from members of the Clave that despised him for his involvement in the Circle.

How much time did he even spend bitterly wasting away, doing nothing, having nothing to look forward to, especially until the children were old enough for him to be their instructor?

You can understand that DESPERATION when Valentine looked for him.
