What if you grew up knowing you weren't wanted.
What if year after year, you were with all the other orphaned or abandoned kids, and it seemed like they were all taken in except you.
And every time you were picked, every time you got your hopes up and started thinking This time, this family is going to see me. This time, I'm going to be loved, they turn you away. Its not a good fit, some say. Others say you're too difficult, too stubborn, too much.
But you're just you. You're just a product of an environment that forced you to protect and care for yourself, because no one else would.
You keep keeping on. As the years go by and you're still alone, you start to feel done with it. So when one day, you wake up and feel a power that draws you to the comfortable darkness, you decide you're done playing by everyone's rules. You run away. Explore these new abilities. Finally live. And you believe that with these new powers, maybe you don't need a family. Maybe you can do this on your own. Maybe you really don't need someone to want you.
But someone finally does.
She notices you testing out your new powers. Watches you find abandoned places to make hideouts. Realizes that while you are far too young to be out here by yourself, no one is looking for you. There are no missing person reports, there is no one running through the streets screaming your name, there was never going to be.
And so, here you are now. A twelve year old girl, locked away in a bunker, a mad woman telling you that you'll be her weapon, that she'll train you to use your powers to kill.
"How powerful you'll be."
You fight against it. Grabbing the bars of your cell, snarling at her that No, you won't be a weapon, you won't let it happen, no one gets to control you! But she just smiles at your rage.
"I'm lucky I found you before anyone got emotionally attached to you," she says casually.
She turns away, leaving you with words that cut as sharp as a knife.
"No one will come looking for you if nobody cares."
