Dawn: Your existence confuses me.
Derek: why?
Dawn: Your presence is annoying but the thought of anything bad happening to you upsets me.

Derek: man, this turkey sandwich is so good! I'm so glad we live here.
Derek: I know, the food is always good here--and it's good for you too!
Derek: yeah it is!
Dani: man, you guys are always so positive! It's really great--I know some people that are negative and they can't see anything good in anything and people like that are just not very pleasant to be around.
Leah: you guys, I'm right here.
Dani: what?
Leah: I said I'm right here! You guys are talking about me like I'm not here but I am and I don't like what you're saying about me.
Melanie: Leah, I don't think Dani was referring to you.
Leah: well how could she not be? You guys know how much I hate sandwiches and love being negative.
Melanie: I didn't know you hated sandwiches.
Leah: why do you think I'm eating soup, Melanie? It's like a hundred degrees outside!
Melanie: I guess that makes sense...
Dani: look, Leah, I wasn't referring to you, really.
Leah: promise?
Dani: I promise.
Leah: sorry guys, I just got out of hand there. You know, I don't want to be that guy, you know, who's so prideful and unwilling to back down and probably pops their collar--
Marcus: *popping his collar* guys, I'm right here.
Leah: Derek, I didn't mean you.
Derek: look, I can't help it that I'm better and more confident at everything than you guys. And sure, I'm physically built as if Michelangelo chiseled me from stone...*flexes* but don't put that on me.
Derek: okay, so you're a little cocky, there's nothing wrong with that.
Marcus: oh, so the truth comes out! You know what? Most of the time I'm just acting confident to cover up my insecurities because I don't want to be the person who's overly sensitive about everything.
Subhas: *sobs* I'm right here.
Dani, to Subhas: do we know you?
Subhas: you don't even know me? We live together! I have all of your birthdays memorized...*hands a cake to Leah* happy birthday.
Leah, to the others: you forgot about my birthday.
Derek: it's not like we didn't notice you, you're clearly not the kind of person we'd forget.
Dawn: I'm right here.
Marcus: oh, Dawn! How long have you been there?
Dawn: this is my Treehouse. I'm the one training all of you to be Shadow Seekers. I made those turkey sandwiches--and that soup!
Marcus: oh yeah, of course--it's not like we're being trained and fed and housed by a faceless orb...
Dawn: yeah, yeah, I'm just the mysterious immortal teenager who lives in the woods and has no real friends to remember me as the years march uncaringly on, but at least I'm not the kind of person who steals food from other people's plates!
Dani, stealing food from Melanie's plate: Dawn, Derek is right there.
Dawn: whatever, we have to leave anyway. There is trouble a few thousand leagues southwest of here, and it is our duty to address it.
Derek: you mean the town where the cops are looking for a homocidal maniac?
Melanie: guys, I'm right here!
This is why I never get any writing done...
me: “Derek don’t you ever want to share your emotions?”
Derek: “No.”
Melanie: “I do.”
me: “I know, Melanie.”
Melanie: “I’m really sad.”
me: “I know.”
But Marcus, Melanie, Leah, Dani, Subhas and Derek aren't sure they're cut out to be heroes, despite the fact that they've had magical powers since they were kids. (Well, except Subhas, but we'll get to that later.) These six teens from Atlanta could not be more different, yet they're stuck living together in a giant magical Treehouse training for a quest. That's right, first day on the job and they already have an ancient magical artifact to recover from the monsters they're supposed to be able to fight. It's a lot for six untrained heroes to handle, but as they'll soon learn they're tougher than they think, and they have more in common than they could possibly understand.
Shadow Seekers by Carolyn Rogan
There is a principle of nature that over the centuries humans have chosen to forget. It states that every time order is imposed on the world, by creating new life or building great civilizations, it carries with it a shadow of chaos. In every generation, six heroes are born with the ability to enter the realm of shadows and protect humanity from the monsters it creates. No, you don’t get costumes–don’t ask me again.
