TALK ABOUT YOUR MUSE
Love is a complex subject for even the most well adjusted of people. And unfortunately, Michael is not well adjusted.
His emotional intelligence is rudimentary at best, and he understands very little about love, the forms it can take, or how to process and perform it. The ways that other people interact with eachother are already insurmountably foreign to him- to add a topic as weighty as love atop that, a puzzle in itself, nevermind the litany of unspoken expectations and rules that come with it, is a nearly impossible exercise in trust and interpersonal patience. Two things that Michael does not have in great abundance.
Due to his paranoid delusions, Michael is exceedingly slow to trust- and even slower to love, regardless of whether it skews romantic or platonic. But when someone has managed to make such a connection with him, it’s ride or die.
He emotes about as expressively as a cardboard box, and hasn’t spoken a word in years- but his actions speak for him. He loves deeply, longingly, possessively. Sometimes to the point of obsession. The beauty of his love is devotion- but so is its dark side.
If he can’t be at his loved one’s side when he desires, he will take every available opportunity to watch them from afar, stalking their every move, internalizing every detail. Though inappropriate and unsettling, for it his lover will find that he is an intensely thoughtful and observant partner, acutely aware of their preferences and mannerisms.
However, Michael is not particularly physically affectionate. He isn’t overly fond of being touched, even by those who have earned some semblance of trust- it isn’t always unwelcome, but most of the time it’s tolerated at best. And even if he makes an attempt to perform an act of physical affection, such as hugging, it rarely comes across as genuine. Instead it appears as a stilted mimicry, devoid of understanding or pleasure.
Michael likely wouldn’t be able to recognize love for what it is- and becoming close to him is a consistent, vicious uphill battle. But all the same, there is a long neglected part of him that wants to be loved.

Michael, scarcely literate in English, to say nothing of any other language, would not have been able to parse what she had said in her shaking voice.
But regardless, he did stop.
His bloodied knife was raised, the blade catching dim light through the blood smeared across its surface. The killer’s passive, emotionless mask betrayed nothing- no feeling, no pity. As if he were a wicked golem of flesh and bone and hate, created only to bring death and despair to anyone luckless enough to encounter him.
But- his slowly lowering knife told a different story. He could not have placed it if he tried, but a feeling was filling up his chest and his stomach, cutting through the fog around his mind and allowing him some lucidity.
Crying. The woman trembling on the ground was crying.
His arms rested now at his sides, and still he didn’t move- neither to approach or walk away. It was only when he slowly canted his head to one side that it was clear he wasn’t simply in a trance. The killer lifted his free hand to his masked face, gesturing vaguely toward the edge of his eye and down his cheek- whether it was simply mimicry, or some manner of commentary remained unclear, but despite the evil crashing restlessly against the inner walls of his mind, his knife remained lowered to his side.
For now, it was only Michael.

The killer does nothing, says nothing, his immense form merely blocking the doorway- standing still, looking in.
However, Michael has recognized that this is not a typical moment of pause, where his mind and body refuse to cooperate and instead reside nebulously out of his control. No- this is different. The presence at the edge of his mind has seeped into his frame, gripping him still.
He may stay here or go back, but he may go no farther. Whether or not he has come to hunt, the people here, in this place, are not to be touched. Fortunately, Michael has no intention of doing so, satisfied only to watch as the object of his interest sits up from his brittle state of repose. He looks startled. Vulnerable. But- not terrified.
The killer hadn’t intended to wake the object of his personal obsession, of course.. He would much rather have watched the man sleep. But it comes as a soothing balm, regardless, that Dwight has correctly interpreted the cause of Michael’s unexpected visit is not to kill.

MY MUSE IS BEING HELD IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT.
A lone patient sat in silence on the gurney to which his padded shackles were attached, his haunted eyes bleary and unfocused, his blank face an eerie reflection of the blank room in which he was imprisoned.
Michael had never been sure how long he slept, when sedated, but his arms and legs felt like wood- heavy and close to useless, as they always had after the pills were given to him. It was all he could do simply to sit upright, and even this small act of control felt like a superhuman effort.
His eyes, desperately heavy with soul-deep exhaustion, begged him to lay down, to sleep until another set of disdaining strangers came to administer the next round of medication. And though there was little else to occupy himself with in this empty room, the dark gap of a dreamless sleep only left him more and more disoriented.
Time had passed. So much time had passed. But he had already lost track of the days. Nothing changed in the white room, save for what was austerely provided for him to eat, and even the intermittent presentations of food began to blend together, indistinct and impossible to put in order within his foggy mind. And despite his best efforts to stay awake, each blink drew longer, pulling him back toward another empty sleep.
However the sound of scraping against the door caused the cell’s singular occupant to jerk awake once more. The sound of keys rattled against the exterior. And then it opened.
The woman who entered was not a nurse. She was not a doctor. And for a moment, his bleary, tired eyes seemed to come into focus. The obvious question was left unspoken, though it hung heavy in the air.

“MIKEY! HOW IS MY SWEET LITTLE GUY TODAY?” danny made his way towards the shape, going to literally hang off of his arm. dangerous, seeing as it was the arm that usually held a knife. then again! danny had been stabbed before.
and what was a knife between besties? “HAVE I TOLD YOU YET HOW HANDSOME YOU ARE TODAY?”
A familiar voice cut through the neighborhood silence, drawing the attention of its sole occupant where he stood upon on the wet pavement. Michael’s intimidating figure shifted, turning to look in the intruder’s direction, the pale face of his mask nearly luminescent in the dappled moonlight peering through broken clouds overhead.
IT WAS HIM AGAIN.
The strange little man, the creeping shadow in black robes and his ghostly mask, a face contorted in fear- or perhaps pain. His presence was occasional, but persistent, and though eternally alert, Michael had long grown somewhat accustomed to it- as well as the saccharine words the man always came bearing. However he failed to see how this ghostly man saw any sense in referring to him as little. Not when Michael had to look down in order to observe him- even at the modest distance currently lying between them.
And equally perplexing- handsome. Michael tilted his head, his shoulders hunching only slightly, puzzled. He had never given thought to his own appearance.. Much less, how it may be perceived. With little to compare himself to, he had no choice but to trust the judgement.
By the time the visitor was finished with his honeyed compliments, he was already nearly at Michael’s side, and for a moment his knuckles turned white as he gripped his knife, lifting it only slightly, wary of the approach.. But the tension melted away as the man simply wrapped his small, leather clad hands around Michael’s arm, gentle as can be.
Michael’s empty gaze, focused initially upon the ghostly mask of the little killer, found its way down to the hands on his arm in a very overt gesture of intent interest.
He still wasn’t sure what to make of the little man. He spoke to Michael in ways that no one else had- he showed him things. He returned again and again, at first in the shadows and then openly, without fear.. And something in his lack of fear soothed the fear in Michael’s heart.
Michael is nonverbal, and has very poor communication skills. His handwriting is noticeably untrained, as are the contents of his limited vocabulary. However, he’s significantly more astute than one may give him credit for on the basis of his ability to communicate.
He is always watching the way others behave, how they solve problems and get what they want- filling in the gaps left by years of neglect and isolation. It’s often difficult for him to understand why people act the way they do, and his imitations of “normal” behaviour tend to be pale and thin- but he is always learning.
