Shangri La by Jake Bugg - Review by Shake!
Ah Shangri La! The long awaited follow up album from feisty songbird Mr Jake Bugg. Following the success and raw emotion of his hard-hitting debut was always going to be an uphill battle but it seems that Jake has successfully reached the top of his hill again with Shangri La. The album is not only of huge individual merit but also effortlessly keeps up with the fantastic standard of Bugg's previous effort; a well worthy purchase. A wonderful achievement for such an interesting individual with such a heavily awaited new release. Â
Singles such as the ever catchy âSlumville Sunriseâ play true to the effortlessly cool and edgy talents of the original Bugg sound but and it is easy to see exactly why it was chosen to be first single. Pine Trees, Simple Pleasures and other such mellower tracks signal an interesting decision to connect with a softer more romantic side of the young Nottingham lad that has not quite been explored yet. I highly enjoy this softness contrasted with the raw and fearless sound of Buggâs distinctive voice and I would be interested to see a further development of this in later musical endeavours.Â
Despite this, the bold catchy choruses echo true to form and still ring through consistently clear and loud in the much of the rest of the track list, backed with gutsy guitars and decorated by angry and piercingly honest verse lyrics. Although it is not uncommon to suffer from what may be aptly referred to as âsecond album syndromeâ Jake has easily managed to avoid this problem that plagues many of the world's breakthrough artist. He continues to cement himself into place as an incredibly influential artist of the last couple of years and working as a key player in the new rise of the new folk scene. Congratulations are in order for Mr Bugg, keep up the good work, sir!

RETURN OF THE SHAKE!
Hello ladies and gents! As you may have noticed the Shake team were unfortunately forced to take a rather over long hiatus from the music blogging as life tends to intervene in such matters. After a rather long time we are now finally ready to rejoin the world as a revamped and ready team of musical enthusiasts and nosey fangirls. Please go ahead and hit that follow button up there to ready yourself for all the latest on new releases, reviews, featured artists, songs of the week and more. To make sure we start out on the right foot we will need a minimum number of notes and followers from this post to get as many people involved as possible so please SIGNAL BOOST THIS TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS WHO LOVE MUSIC AS MUCH AS US! Stay rad and stay tuned folks!
Welcome back to Song of the Week! This week your ears will be graced by the beauty of Jamie Scott of Graffiti6 performing 'Stare into the Sun' Enjoy!Â
Featured Artist: Lewis Watson!
If you're a fan of Ed Sheeran, the acoustic music scene of even just music in general, then this week's featured artist is for you! Lewis Watson, the 19 year old hailing from Oxford, is fast becoming one of my favourite artists around and if you haven't heard of him, you should have!
From humble beginnings making videos on YouTube, Lewis Watson has now released his first EP 'It's got four sad songs on it BTW' and we here at Shake, think it's wonderful.
Definitely check Lewis out on Youtube, Facebook and his website for more!Â
Best of luck from the Shake team to Lewis in his musical endeavours! Â
Keaton Henson - Dear (Review by Shake!)
Okay guys, so Keaton Henson is getting a lot of attention here on Shake recently, but, I promise it is deserved! As some of you who are fans of Keatonâs work may know, his album âDearâ came out very recently on iTunes and Amazon and such like, and well, I bet you can guess what this review is going to be about!
Listening to âDearâ is like finding money on the floor on a nice day, youâre already excited and happy enough and then everything gets just that little bit better! The music on âDearâ, as expected, is fantastic and still has that lovely unique style that only Keaton Henson can produce. The lyrics in all of the songs are as powerful and emotional as ever and in some of the newer songs, possibly even better!
I believe âDearâ has been put together excellently and flows perfectly from song to song, as all good albums should do. The production done on the album is such that the beautiful acoustic qualities to Keatonâs music are not lost through over production which was one of my main worries. Despite all of these wonderful things however, I think my favourite aspect of âDearâ is simply Keatonâs beautiful vocals that never fail to astound me in their beauty. The emotion and love that is poured into them is so obvious through Keatonâs songs and I think that is simply amazing!
My favourite song from the album would have to be âTo Your Health (New Mix)â but it was a close call between that, âSmall Handsâ and âYou Donât Know How Lucky You Areâ. None of the songs on the album disappoint, of course,  but these three are definitely  my absolute favourites.
If you have a chance you should definitely purchase âDearâ as it will definitely not disappoint and if possible get the deluxe version! At the moment on iTunes the deluxe version is going for the very good price of ÂŁ9.99! Check it out here!
Thank you to Keaton Henson for you beautiful music, it has cheered up the Shake office many a time on a rainy day! Best wishes and the best of luck!
Kieran dishes the dirt on Delorentos!
Not too long ago these guys were our Song of the Week with âRight to Knowâ and now weâve finally got answers for all the questions we know you guys have been itching to ask! We are talking about none other than Delorentos, ladies and gentlemen. We had the pleasure to have a little chat with co-lead singer, Kieran!
Shake: So as is the tradition, first things first; what first inspired you to get involved in making your own music? Kieran: I think, for whatever reason, I always wanted to be a musician. I loved music from when I was a kid - from when my dad used to sit at the end of my bed listening to Beatles albums as low as he could so's not to wake me, and I loved singing. I remember one day in school at the end of the year, when it was sunny, one of the other lads brought in a guitar, and we opened the fire escape of the classroom and they played a song that they wrote. I couldn't get my head around how they could write their own songs. One of them just shrugged and said - "you just think about something, and then sing about it". I think that's when I decided that I would be a songwriter. All I had to do was sort out a band, and while it took me a few years after that, I was lucky enough to find that eventually.
Shake: Wow, that is definitely a much more interesting and meaningful answer than I was expecting! Now, I big part of your life together as a band is touring, does it ever get stressful spending so much time together on tour? Kieran: Yep. It generally dissipates as soon as we get off tour though!
Shake: I had a feeling it might! I suppose a suitable question to follow would be, who would you say is the messiest band member? Kieran: The other three have various hygiene issues. Luckily, my personal hygiene is a beacon of inspiration to the others.
Shake: Of course, we had never doubted your cleanliness Kieran! Now, tell us, is there a story behind the bandâs name? Kieran: Yes. It's boring though.
Shake: I believe that may be a story for another time then, perhaps? A more interesting question now then, what would you say is the weirdest thing you have ever done? Kieran: Ever? Depends on context. I mean, becoming a full-time musician is pretty mental to some people. I've worked for a very short time in the third world (Haiti). I've jumped off things that I shouldn't have. I've drunk too much and said the wrong thing a lot. I've dressed up/acted in some weird things and written some weird songs... I dunno.
Shake: So a long story short to our audience, Kieran does not know. But Iâm gonna say itâs a tie between, became and full time musician and, worked in Haiti. To round us off then Kieran, what would your advice be to young people looking to get involved in music and the music industry? Kieran: Learn how to motivate yourself and be as creative as you can... and don't be afraid to fail, 'cos you will. When you succeed though, it's worth it. Â
Wonderful stuff from Kieran! Many thanks from the Shake team for his time and our best of luck to Delorentos for the future! Also, we hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!

Rocking with Ruby and her rib cage!
Exciting things have been going on here at Shake and we are pleased to present to you lovely ladies and gentlemen, an interview with the lovely Ruby from Ruby and the Ribcage! Told you it was exciting! Interview by Shakeâs journalist in residence
Shake: So letâs get this show on the road, what do you think first inspired you to get involved in making music?
Ruby: I used to write plays with my sister, and also with my best mate Briony who lived in the same little village. Actually it's really just a hamlet; we only had a post box and some sheep. The plays were mostly about farm yard animals falling in love, or brave adventurers wooing maidens. My sister would construct a drum kit from empty ice cream tubs, and she'd thwack the plastic with my mumâs chop sticks, whilst Briony and I would take it in turns to play the farm yard version of Romeo or Juliet. We needed some melodies to go with the Safeway drum beats, so I used to write TERRIBLE songs to sing over the top. I think that's my first memory of writing music.
Shake: That is possibly the most original story of musical inspiration I have ever heard. I love it! So, apart from the love stricken farmyard animals, who would you say are your biggest musical influences? Ruby: Obviously my mum and my dad were the gateway to all the music I listened to as a kid, and then later in life my friends and peers. Dad always listened to a huuuuge variety of music. He'd get really obsessed with minimalist stuff for a year or so, then he'd listen to nothing but the grateful dead, and then soon enough he'd play me Tanita Tikaram or Van Morrison, and my mum would dance around to The Pretenders and Eddi Reader. I think Annie Lennox and Joni Mitchell stand out the most in my memory, because I used to hide under my bed covers at night, playing their tapes and pretending to be on stage singing their songs. I used to spend hours and hours at night time, under my bed covers, pretending I was famous and successful until I fell asleep.
Shake: Some very good choices there, excellent! Now, here is the crucial question on everyoneâs minds at the moment, is there a story behind your bandâs name? Ruby: Yeah, but itâs not particularly exciting. I have a giant Rib cage. It genuinely is exceptionally huge. We decided Ruby & the Rib Cage had a nice ring to it, and I liked the idea of honouring the thing that gives me such a huge source of natural resonance. I've also been drawing a recurring Rib Cage doodle for years, which sort of inspired the name.
Shake: That is definitely exciting enough for us! You definitely seem a fun loving type Ruby, but what would you say is the weirdest thing youâve ever done? Ruby: Audition a bunch of strangers in my living room, in order to start up the most important and meaningful musical project of my life.
Shake: Good answer, and what would you say is the best advice youâve ever been given?
Ruby: To take cranberry extract tablets before travelling in India. I didn't take the advice and I got amoebic dysentery. Iâve since given the advice and watched others reap the rewards.
Shake: Any readers travelling to India soon? Listen up! Aha, time for another crucial question, Ruby. What popular artist would you most like to work with at the moment? Ruby: Bjork. Hands down.
Shake: Wow, good choice! What do you think is the next step for Ruby and the Ribcage? Ruby: Up up up and away I hope! We are recording an EP over the next couple of months, so fingers crossed it'll go down well and we'll attract some more fans! We have 12 festival dates this summer, so we're hoping to reach a big audience, and fingers crossed people will like what they hear...
Shake: Exciting stuff! We certainly like what we hear! So, finally, what would your advice be for young people looking to get involved in music and the music industry? Ruby: Ask me when I've been doing this for a bit longer. I don't think I'm ready to give advice just yet. I'm still finding my feet in this industry, and have a long way to go before I understand any of it.
Weâll hold you to that Ruby! We wish all the best of successes to Ruby and the Ribcage and cannot wait to hear their forthcoming EP. Thank you to Ruby for her contribution to Shake, and thank you to all our readers.Have a lovely evening and best wishes from the Shake team!
Song of the Week, bang on time this week! Are you proud of us?
Anyway, the honor of SOTW this week goes to Irish Singer/Songwriter Lisa Hannigan and 'What'll I Do'. 'What'll I Do' is the second single to be released from her album 'Passenger' which we highly recommend. We love this song and we think you should too!Â
Featured Artist/s - Mystery Jets!
Ding ding ding! A new featured artist/s has arrived on Shake! This time we have carefully picked out English indie band Mystery Jets! I discovered Mystery Jets only recently while I was scrolling disdainfully through my Facebook news feed wondering why everything was so boring. Suddenly I came across a video that a friend (with very good music taste) had shared called 'Someone Purer', I was intrigued and, well, you can guess whose song it was/is!
'Someone Purer' is a fantastic song which is the first single taken off of Mystery Jets' fourth album 'Radlands'. 'Radlands' will be available on the 30th April 2012 and will definitely be in line to purchase it, you should be too!
Check out 'Someone Purer' here, and we hope you all have a lovely weekend!
