feeling sad, time to watch don quixote
shakishkina -> @shakishkinaa
Alright, I made a new blog just for ballet because sideblogs are incredibly un-functional. I couldn't like posts, reply to posts, send asks, or follow anyone from my sideblog.
Excited to actually be able to fully participate in the small but growing tumblr ballet community!
Hi everyone, moving to @shakishkinaa (with 2 a's) !!!

kind of bothersome when male ballet dancers can't manage 180° splits when the women they're dancing with are working so hard and pushed to be very flexible

Renata is such a performer.. I enjoy her dancing so much!! That video of her performance is such a gift. I'm really so happy for her and I hope she gets to dance this role again and again and becomes like Oksana Skorik where she settles into it and becomes truly phenomenal.
About Alina Somova, I saw that the was working at a ballet company in Georgia, but I'm not sure. It's so strange how she just vanished. Tereshkina, Kondaurova, Novikova and her were like, the remaining ones of what was left of Mariinsky's old style. I thought it was going to be a big loss to the company, but the Russians kept it quiet for the most of it.
It's definitely odd how quietly she disappeared. She seemed like a very popular and celebrated dancer! I wonder what went on in the behind the scenes and her reasons for leaving. After reading Bolshoi Confidential, my mind is swimming with all sorts of possibilities that I hope are wrong. I hope she's doing well, wherever she is! You're so right about the four of them.... when they've all danced their final performances it will really feel like a (bittersweet) new era.
Thoughts on Konovalov's and Shakirova's debut in SL?
I adored it!
I was especially impressed with how swan-like and elongated Shakirova's arms looked despite her smaller size. I think this is a wonderful reminder that despite the Mariinsky casting almost exclusively taller dancers as Odette/Odile, soubrettes like Shakirova are just as capable of the role.
I thought Renata's Odette was very interesting and passionate. While still soft and elegant, she appeared, as I expected, less fragile and delicate than Odette's like Somova or Ilyushkina. Instead, she reminded me a bit of Tereshkina, whose interpretation of Odette is both absolutely stunning while also seeming to convey the tragedy of the character with a bit less of the fragility. And of course, her Odile was amazing. Her fouettés were sharp and musical, and her interpretation both conveyed the playful, mischievous nature of Odile as well as her more sinister, evil intentions underneath the charming exterior.
As for Konovalov, I thought he was an excellent supporting partner to Renata, which makes sense as they have already performed the ballet together at the Primorsky. I thought he seemed confident and steady, though I also would like to see him develop the role emotionally a bit more. Really though, I was focusing too much on Shakirova! I suppose I should go back later and try to look more at Konovalov! I'm a fan of his and was so happy to hear of his recent promotion to first soloist! I'm just glad he and Shakirova both got a chance at this ballet. Hopefully, we will see them both performing these roles many more times.
Finally, for those of you who don't know already, the youtube channel @user-ww7xn3gc6u posted a video over thirty minutes long of Shakirova and Konovalov's debut performance! Many thanks to this channel and go check it out if you haven't already! I would also encourage you to watch Shakirova's Black Swan pas de deux with Timofeyev from 2019. It's wonderful to see how she has matured and developed her Odile over the past four years!
Alina Somova no longer listed on the Mariinsky website
@thestreetdancer2023 unfortunately I can't reply in the comments (or like posts or follow anyone.....) from this sideblog, but thank you! I really appreciate the info!!

I really hope that Even Capitaine is a good partner for Iliushkina and that she likes him and it turns into a successful partnership and he dances well enough to match her grace and elegance because they look soooooooooooo good together in all the pictures I've seen.
My first trip to London and I had tickets to Sleeping Beauty! The Royal Opera House was packed for a Monday Matinee (I think it was a school holiday) and the performance is everything I hoped for. The company looked very sharp, the costumes sumptuous, the corps a delight. Gina Storm-Jensen was the Lilac Fairy and danced regally. You believed in her power of love to conquer evil.
But I was there for Sarah Lamb, and she was next level. She has an airy elegance on stage that is not captured in photos. Her lightness, stage presence, musical phrasing are superb. She transported the entire hall to a land faraway. I didn’t realize until recently that she’s over 40 and near the end of her career, but Aurora is HER role. She is every bit the charming, young princess. Technically, she was shy of perfect. She adjusted at the end of two diagonals. She seemingly got a little dizzy and had to take a step to save her balance. But the hard parts—rose adagio, Act III PPD, dream sequence—were utter perfection. Elegant is my overall impression.
Hirano is a noble prince. To be honest, Prince Florine doesn’t have much to do in this ballet. His one job is to be an elegant young prince searching for love. Ryoichi Hirano was the chivalrous prince we all wanted to see.
Overall, LOVED it. And my husband and kids who are not big ballet fans, did not fall asleep. Hahaha! In fact, they lie did the entire experience. We sprang for good seats — worth it!!
Thanks for sharing your impressions! So glad you enjoyed it!!
