the people yearn for nonplastic fabrics
I have just gone through my wardrobe and recorded the composition of everything I own for data analysis purposes™️ (I have been going through some shitty neighbour drama & needed a distraction lol)
This didn’t take long as I don’t own a lot of clothes. I did include what I am currently wearing, and clothes in the laundry basket. I did not include:
• clothes with no tag • clothes whose tags did not specify material % • clothes in long-term storage which I haven’t worn in years (mostly commemorative jumpers or pub crawl shirts I saved for laughs)
The final list contained 51 items. Here’s a snapshot:
The following are the fun stats I have computed from this stupid and whimsical exercise:
I’m on my phone so I’m not even going to attempt making charts. a few discussion points to at least turn the wall of numbers into words:
• I’m happy to see that almost half my wardrobe is thrifted clothes. even the new clothes are mostly things I’ve had for years - I rarely go shopping & when I do it’s at Savers lol
• I’m also pleased to see over half of my clothes are full natural fabrics; mostly cotton. my shitty skin does not enjoy plastics or even coarser natural fibres like wool, so this checks out
• my secondhand clothes have both a higher percentage of full natural items, as well as a higher average % of natural fabrics than my new clothes. this is in line with the general concensus in the comments/reblogs that it’s easier to thrift natural fabrics than to buy new
• the split by category is mildly interesting. a very high percentage of my shirts are natural (cotton) but for jackets, jumpers and pants this drops quite a lot. this is directly correlated with the % of each category purchased secondhand
• there is an increase in average % natural fibres for secondhand compared to new for all categories, except long sleeve shirt (which started on 100% so doesn’t count)
conclusion: if you want more natural fabrics in your wardrobe, buy second hand. end ted talk

This is back on my dash! And listen, I love to see Amir Khusrau getting appreciation, but this translation ignores a lot. The original rhymes! And scans! And does playful things with register! And conveys a tone of affectionate banter between the two speakers, not least because it has them both addressing each other as sakhi (translated above as “girl”) in the last two lines. I think taking some liberties with line order is worth it to preserve more of the rest—and I think there’s a better translation of sakhi. And so:
He only visits once a year, I splurge big on him when he’s here, His kisses make my tastebuds tango. Who, bitch, your man? Nah, bitch, a mango.

I am reading a book about Marie Curie and the women she worked with, and I have a new fave scientist to go with Lise Meitner: Ellen Gleditsch 😍😍💯👩🔬
• second female professor of norway, kicked off radioactivity research at the university of oslo. a bunch of men tried to stop her and failed
• determined the half life of radium-226 (1600 years) which is the value still accepted today
• her laboratory sheltered scientists fleeing from nazi germany, she also hid people in her home
• protested fascist regimes all the way to death
• took in some of her younger siblings after their parents passed away. never married and there is no mention of relationships in her life story 😎
This book has introduced me to so many cool scientists I’ve never heard of before. let’s go!
u know what makes me cry..... that one van gogh quote about life changing for the better..... “many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. and it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘what do i care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ yes, evil often seems to surpass good. but then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. one morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. and so i must still have hope.” yeah..... Crying....

an ornithologist pointed a microphone at a bird sitting alone on a wire and caught the sound of the bird singing a song at a decibel so low that it would be impossible for another bird to hear it, meaning the bird was singing quietly to itself I love life
OMG! I thought it was going to be a message about perseverance or it never being too late to follow your dreams, but nooooooo. This is excellent storytelling.
I’m fine. I’m fine I am not at all emotionally wrecked by this.
Affection
It's probably not very interesting, but, I was looking through Polish paintings and noticed a trend...

"save me, substance abuse!" i cry. before you can moralize to me about the dangers of addiction, a noble and powerful steed gallops into the room - my horse whom i have named "substance abuse". you learn an important lesson about making assumptions. i snort a line off its back
i want to live in my memory of you forever
