the sexuality of the Lost Records girls was confirmed yesterday by Michel Koch on Twitter, and while I’m happy we have more canonical lesbians (Kat, Nora) and bisexual girls (Autumn) in video games, I still couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed when he said Swann’s sexuality is up to the player :/ like, I know most people will still see her as queer either way, but the whole “playersexual” approach has been used to justify horrendous homo/biphobia far too many times. I mean, people STILL to this day argue over Max's sexuality. so a player seeing Swann as straight is technically a valid interpretation if we’re gonna go by this logic. I just don’t get it when the romance options are already female-only, you might as well say she’s at the very least queer if they really didn’t want to give Swann a concrete sexuality, but that’s just me. what are your thoughts?

Hey, thanks for reaching out! For those who haven’t seen Michel’s tweet, here it is:

At first I was annoyed that it seemed to imply Swann was playersexual yet again, but the important distinction this time is that Swann has no romance path where she can only romance a man and not a woman. Canonically, she is queer.

I believe “up to the player” means that Swann is canonically sapphic, but her specific label is left to the player to decide. For example, @shallanzah drew a beautiful fanart last year of the girls at Pride, featuring Swann with a pan pride flag. For me personally, I see Swann as a lesbian because during truth or dare, her answers to having a crush on a guy are: “I only like fictional boys like Peter Pan”;“there was a guy at summer camp who was nice to look at… but then it turned out we might be related”; or “My lips are sealed, sorry.” However, there is evidence to the contrary, like her calling a male celeb “cute” in her favorite movies of 1995 list and not specifying gender when she talks about dating as an adult. And then there are players who choose not to romance anybody and could interpret Swann as aro and/or ace-spec. By stating Swann’s sexuality is up to the player, all of these headcanons are still valid.

Nobody who truly loves and cares about this game is going to call Swann straight. Of course, the wording could’ve been better, like “Swann is sapphic/queer, but her exact label is up to the player,” but I think the gist is still there. Swann being the player character means her personality and actions are always going to be more fluid than the others. It gives players more options on how to play Swann, but the important thing is that you can’t play Swann as only showing interest in men, so her queerness is still canon no matter what.
