one of my deepest darkest secrets is that the taggie x rupert relationship dynamic is literal catnip to me it hits every time. give me rakish older man who's so ruthless he scorches the ground of any place he's ever called home and then goes back to his empty life in his empty house and tries to remember how to be human, put a girl in front of him who's so genuinely good and unsullied and a little vulnerable and so sure he can be better than who he's always been that she almost makes him believe he can do it too and then - and this is crucial - make it so he absolutely cannot touch her no matter what. and then sit back and watch me implode

walton revealing cooper did indeed change his tone and soften his words after witnessing lucy's world crumble before her gives "you coming?" a whole new meaning to me 😩

Barb pitches the taffy to Cooper, while she knows he's gonna hate the taste. And when you look closely at her face, it becomes clear she is manipulating Cooper, preparing the ground for what she wants him to do, while she knows he isn't the kind of man to like working for an evil corporation. There are glimpses of both uncertainty and resoluteness on her face when she flirtingly talks about the taffy.
I bet nobody would have paid any attention to the way Cooper touched her hand with the very finger that Lucy bit off later if Barb hadn't emphatically spoken about "someone touching you for the first time". And Cooper just says, "May I?" and lets his finger slide along her hand. He's taken in, hook, line and sinker, by her charm, he would do anything for her.
Skip forward to the present day when he's looking for Wilzig's head and sees Lucy sitting at the bank of the river. Note how beautiful the scenery is, blue water and lush green vegetation, it’s almost romantic. And when Lucy turns to him she - what? She gives him a friendly hello and a most charming smile. Even my heart melted when I saw it.
But Cooper knows better this time. Instead of going along with her being all nice and flirty, he strikes her down. He may be harsh but he doesn't let himself be dragged into another dishonest exchange. Not anymore.

You can dismiss Norm's words about Lucy’s cannibal husband as merely a joke on the writers' part, but I dare you, tell me about one single time Norm was ever shown to be wrong about anything.
cooper being two hundred years old means he talks about stuff that doesn't even really make sense to people. like being amish or a production of "the count of monte cristo". ice cream socials and canned peaches and marmalade. how good food use to taste. even when he served in the military and had to deal with the power armour defects. he misses pre war so bad. when he and everything else was normal. he's practically stuck there. and i don't blame him. cooper makes jokes people don't even get. maybe lucy would be the first person in a hundred years to get a joke and laugh at him. i bet he'd almost break down someone actually understood him for the first time since the bombs fell
