This illustration is based on a forest deity called Kati in old Finnish mythology/folklore – she’s the mother and protector of trees (“puiden emuu”).

I made an illustration process article of this piece for Kuvittaja (magazine of the Finnish Illustration Association), published in the issue 2/19.

Peering back in time over 420 million years ago into the Silurian Period when the first land plants emerged. Pictured in the foreground are Baragwanathia and Zosterophyllum with their pinkish coloured sporangia for dispersing spores.
