Shane had no idea what this renewed connection would mean. She’d made a habit to sever ties with her exes. It was always cleaner that way. She and Carmen had never been friends - not really - and the short time they’d attempted it had been disastrous. Carmen dating Jenny had been one of the rare times in her life that Shane had felt real jealousy.
Carmen’s description of the city made her laugh quietly. “Yeah, but it’s cold as fuck.” Plenty of her exes could say the same thing about her, particularly the one night stands. In that regard she really had no excuse - but she hadn’t made pretenses about it, either. It was the women she dated who ended up royally fucked over. Carmen, Molly and Paige had all been abandoned once she realized she wouldn’t be able to change. A small reminder was all she needed. Her father, Phyllis. They held up an ugly reflection that Shane didn’t always want to see. At the end of the day, she she she did the right thing. Abandoning Molly and Carmen had been for them, not herself.
“Some things don’t change.” She gestured with her coffee to the creamer. “Funny, isn’t it? Feelings change all the time, but people always want their coffee the same.” Except now she drank decaf. “Yeah? Listen, Dana is having a party. You should come.” That was it. She would have to tell Jenny about Carmen now. There was no way she would blindside her like that. Shouldn’t she do the same for Carmen?
Frowning, she turned more toward her, her voice lowering. “Jenny and I are... well, together. She’s had a rough time.” Despite the admission, her grip on Carmen’s arm remained secure and there was something apologetic in her tone. She would never assume that Carmen would want anything to do with her again, but it might hit her hard to learn that both her exes were seeing each other... of all people.
