Charlie tilted her head while the woman was talking and listened intently. She pursed her lips and thought a moment. “Do you take the Subway?” She asked, studying the woman. “New York can have some pretty familiar faces.” She said with a shrug and brought her coffee up to her mouth. She took a sip and winced as the liquid scorched her tongue. 

“I’m Charlie.” She said introducing herself. Charlie thought she might as well, especially since her ‘new friend hunt’ had been brought to a halt with some of the people she had met not contacting her back.

Molly smiled, "I've taken the sub way once and it was a complete disaster.." She laughed mid sentence. "I ended up on the wrong platform and train so I had to ride the sub way for a bit..perhaps you saw me then" she smiled. Molly watched as the woman sipped her coffee. "Nice to meet you Charlie. I'm Molly". 

Molly had been looking for some new people to hang out with, the only person so far to have run into her was Shane and that was weeks ago. Molly hadn't heard from anyone in a while, Molly looked up at the woman and began to speak "I'd ask you to coffee but you already have one" she laughed biting her lip, "perhaps we could get something stronger”.

Charlie x Open // Statues

Charlie took a sip of her steaming coffee and leaned back onto the bench she had been sitting on. The center of the city, in a hidden bungalow there lay a glorious garden, which offers the perfect amount of shade and sun. Charlie looked up at the sky framed by the brick buildings around her and sighed. The clouds above have not shielded the space from the suns heat and she began to sweat. Out of the corner of her eye she saw someone enter the community space, she turned her head to see who it was.

Molly was still trying to naviagate herself around New York, it was her first time here and she wasn’t sure where to go or where things were. As Molly walked she came across a little garden area, she had been walking around for hours and getting really sticky from the sun. “i need shade” she thought as she walked into the space. As Molly began walking to find the shadest place she came across a young girl, a girl she perhaps recognised. 

Molly cleared her throat and smiled “Hi. I feel like I maybe know you? Or at least seen you around”. Molly looked up at the woman in front of her and waited for a response, for all she knew she could be talking to a complete stranger but something about her felt familiar.

Shane: (long pause) I know, Molly. I'm sorry... fuck. Jenny has a lot going on right now, she... she probably wasn't thinking straight, you know? You okay?

Molly: I guess but I've not done anything to the girl. I don't see her problem. (Long pause) uh I'm really shaken up if I'm honest. It was horrible.

Shane: I'm sorry. I know. I'll talk to her, okay? It won't happen again. I promise.

Molly: okay. It was just..I don't know I've never seen her like that Shane. She was so awful. I thought she was going to follow me home. I should be the one angry and aggressive not her. Molly watched Shane’s lips as she spoke, she had missed hearing her voice. “Um yeah. I live in an apartment not too far from here. I got a puppy too, Clio” she smiled. Why she had just told Shane that she’ll never know. I guess it’s nervous babbling.

“So..are you here alone? Or still with uh Jenny is it?” She asked quizzingly. Last she heard Shane and Jenny were together in L.A. “Do you live around here too?” She asked. “We should totally go for a few drinks, catch up on old and new things” she asked realising she was asking too many questions.

“Sorry. I’m talking too fast. I’ll let you gather your thoughts and you answer the questions in whatever order you want” she smiled. Whilst Molly waited for Shane to speak she ordered her Chinese with the waiter at the desk. “Can I have special chow mein, special fried rice and some crispy chicken, to take away please”

“A puppy?” Despite the circumstances, Shane smiled at the thought of Molly with a puppy. It was a cute image. She had considered getting Jenny a puppy, but quickly dismissed the idea of disastrous… she had no idea what had happened to the dog Jenny used to have and hadn’t ever asked about it. 

As if on cue, Molly brought up Jenny and she suddenly felt awkward… almost guilty. It was hard enough that she had to explain meeting Carmen to Jenny. She couldn’t imagine having to add Molly onto that. It might be enough to make Jenny have a nervous breakdown. “Uh yeah, yeah… What about you? I know you were dating someone back in LA.” She didn’t know if the relationship was serious enough for Molly to bring the girl all the way to New York.

She secretly hoped it wasn’t.

Having a few drinks with Molly would probably send Jenny into cardiac arrest. She hesitated, resisting the instinctual urge to say yes. It was difficult. “We do need to catch up. Um… so, Dana’s having a party. She’s here too. So are the others.” She shrugged. New York was a different sort of mecca, but clearly one that had attracted her friends… and they were all close enough that it hadn’t taken much rearranging to alter her own lifestyle so they could all remain in the same city. “You should come.”

Molly smiled "yeah I have a black pug, you should come meet her sometime". Molly fiddled with hair listening as Shane spoke. Molly looked up when Shane said she was still with Jenny, Molly's heart sank. "Uh. No I'm not with anyone right now and I came to New York just me" she said.

Molly looked around the restaurant then focused back to just Shane. "A party. Is that even a good idea" she thought to herself. Molly hadn't seen anyone in a long time and she wasn't sure how everyone would react to her. "A party sounds cool. If I can get over to it I will..what's the address?" She said with a smile.

Within a few minutes Molly's dinner arrived all packed neatly in a bag for her. "Thank you" she said to the guy at the desk. "I guess I best get this back home. Here's my number" she said pumping the digits into Shane's phone. "Give me a call or text and we can have that catch up?" She smiled. With that she gave Shane a squeeze on the arm and left.

Molly walked along the sidewalk to her car, she opened the door placing her dinner on the floor and jumped in herself. She started up the engine and started to drive home, she couldn't believe she ran into her. She ran into the girl of her dreams, the girl who got away. Molly couldn't shake her and all the memories out of her head, she turned the radio up full whack and drove on home.

Taking her food and walking up the 100 steps she got to her door and collapsed inside. Placing her food and keys on the side she cuddled Clio. Molly then got herself comfy in her pyjamas and had her Chinese curled up in bed with her gorgeous pup.

Molly stood in silence for a moment. “Jenny. Really of all people” she thought. Molly let Jenny get her anger out first before proceeding to answer her. “Oh. Hi Jenny. I’m walking my dog, yourself?” She asked snappy.

Molly couldn’t understand what she had done to Jenny. If anyone should be angry it should be me, she’s the one who stole my letter. Molly composed herself. “What is your problem?” She snapped. “You are the one who hid my letter to Shane for your own personal gain. If anyone should be angry it’s going to be me” she said.

Jenny burst out laughing, since self-pity wouldn’t do the situation justice. “What is my problem? I have so many problems, my breath would run out before I could possibly list them all. So fuck off, Molly,” Jenny spat, turning to walk away. She stopped herself and turned back to Molly.

“I hid your letter because you were trying to manipulate her. You looked down on her, you condescended, you ran as soon as things got a little bit rocky, Princess. She didn’t need it then, and she doesn’t need it now. I’m sure you want to find her and save her, but for fuck’s sake, Molly, she doesn’t need you.” Jenny looked out at the rough sea. “Did your mother follow you here? Or just pay for your relocation?”

Molly couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Go take your shit out on someone who cares. Jenny. You are disgusting how dare you spit at me" she said getting angrier and angrier. "Just because your life is out of control.." Molly stopped. "I never manipulated Shane, I didn't even know what my mother said to her and FYI! It's none of your fucking business it was between me and Shane".

Molly was shaking with anger. "No my mother didn't pay for me to move here nor is she here. Go take a long hard look at yourself Jenny. Perhaps you'll see who's to blame for all your problems" Molly was livid she had never been so angry with someone in her life.

With that Molly picked up Clio and left the beach. Reaching into her pocket she grabbed her phone and dialed Shane's number. Composing herself Molly walked her and Clio home.

It was Molly’s second evening and she found herself wondering around walking Clio. There was so much of New York she hasn’t seen and so little time to do it in.

Molly walked Clio along the side walks, she walked down little pavements and past different houses. She soaked up her surroundings and the fresh air. Molly walked around for hours till she came across a little spot on the beach where she sat down with Clio.

The moon light bounced off the water and made pretty colours. “What a beautiful place this is” Molly said to Clio. Molly could hear the waves crashing against the shore, she could also hear something like a person. As Molly got up to see where the noise was coming from she saw someone, someone she knew. “Who is it? Is it who she thought it was” she asked herself.

After the evening she had just had with Shane, Jenny felt an extreme urgency to center herself. Soul-searching was a ridiculous notion to her, trite and nonsensical. But maybe she ought to tell her brain to shut the fuck up for a minute and try it out. Couldn’t hurt.

She wandered down to the beach where she saw an adorable little dog yipping in her direction. She bent down to pat her when she realized who the owner was. Jenny stood up straight.

“Molly?” she squinted to make sure her eyes weren’t deceiving her. “Are you fucking kidding me? What the hell are you doing here?”

Molly glanced down at the menu a few times before she had the courage to speak. She would know that voice anywhere “Shane” she thought, her heart sank. Molly hadn’t seen Shane since the time she ran into her at the store, last she knew Shane was with Jenny.

Molly cleared her throat and slowly turned round. Seeing Shane brought back all the unwanted memories she had of them together. “Shane. Hi” she smiled. “Can’t believe I’ve run into you, small world” she laughed nervously. The next question was harder to answer, how could she tell Shane that the reason she came to New York was for a fresh start, to get away from Shane and all her feelings she had for her.

“Oh. I got an impressive job opportunity here in New York and I thought why the hell not, you know. Start a fresh somewhere different” she said. “So um, what brings you here? Other than the great food” she smiled.

So many things ran through her mind as Shane spoke. So many unanswered questions and so little time. There was so much unresolved with the two of them, so much that was needed to be talked about.

“Yeah.” Molly had no idea how small the world actually was. She could barely muster up the surprise at seeing her here, at the random Chinese restaurant, and she put her hand against her pocket where her phone was tucked away. 

The job opportunity wasn’t at all a surprise. Molly had always been one of the smartest girls she’d ever been with; that had never been clearer than the night Phyllis had approached her. The relationship would have put a damper on Molly’s future. They both knew that. The kind thing to do was to do exactly what she’d done - and despite the note that Jenny had hidden away, Shane knew she couldn’t regret that decision. 

At this point, she really couldn’t.

“That’s great. Glad to hear it. Uh, same thing, really… you know, starting new.” It wasn’t working out too well so far. The idea of having a fresh start was dead in the water if all the same people appeared, but it was difficult to care. She had been glad to see Carmen and she was also happy to see Molly. There was no point in pondering the eventual troubles it would land her in with Jenny. She’d take one day at a time. “So you’re… living here now?”

 Molly had been driving her jeep all night, she wanted to drive to New York instead of fly as driving helps her think. Her jeep was filled with memories and all her belongings from the old place she used to have. Looking in her rear view mirror and watching her old life stay behind her, made Molly a little sad. She loved her life in L.A. and all her friends and family who were close by but with her recent heartbreak the pain was all too real. The pain made her see life is too short and a new adventure awaits her in New York.

 A black jeep pulled up outside an apartment block, the jeep was Molly’s she had just arrived at her new home. “Home sweet home” she said looking at her puppy on the front seat. “Clio this is our new home” she said grabbing her pup and getting out the car. Molly left everything else in her car, locking it behind her she started walking towards the block. There was 100 steps between her and her new home and Molly was excited and sad all at the same time. 

Holding Clio in her arms Molly put the key in her new door and went inside. Most of her furniture was already in the place as she had sent the removals to her home a few days before she would turn up. She had an open plan kitchen/living space, a beautiful bathroom and a beautiful big bedroom too which had her bed already set up. Molly walked over to the window and looked out “welcome to our new life” she said showing Clio the city out of the window. “We best get the car unpacked..well I best get the car unpacked” she laughed leaving clio to sleep on her bed. 

After 100 boxes and a million steps Molly had finally unpacked her car and got everything she needed in her new apartment. Falling into a heap on her bed after lugging everything up and down the stairs Molly laid down for a while. Cuddling Clio she laid and thought about her old life and what she wanted in her new life. Before long the two of them had fallen asleep, by the time Molly woke up it was late and she hadn’t eaten yet. “crap, we’ve not even eaten yet” she thought to herself. Running to the kitchen and looking through the boxes marked kitchen she found some of Clio’s favourite dog food. “Clio, Clio” she called whilst emptying the tin of food in a bowl for her. “Dinner time” she called and in came Clio running. Whilst Clio had some food Molly had a shower and got herself dressed, “I guess it’s my turn to eat” she said leaving Clio behind at home.

Molly ran down the 100 steps with her keys in hand and jumped into her jeep. “where to eat, where to eat” she said to herself. Molly drove around New York for a bit looking at all the pretty places and lights. She decided after a 30 minute drive she would find a little Chinese restaurant and get a take away to take home. She didn’t want to sit in the corner of a restaurant by herself and have people look at her with pity instead she thought she could pick something up and get back into bed with her dog Clio. 

Molly parked up outside the restaurant and walked in, she looked around and there was couples everywhere. This didn’t surprise her as it was a Friday night, Molly walked straight up to the reception desk and started flicking through the menu. She turned around to look at the restaurant where someone caught her eye. “No. It can’t be” she said to herself still flicking through the menu again, “of all the places in the world she couldn’t be here too? Seriously” she thought but she would recognise that voice anywhere and when the girl spoke standing behind her, she knew exactly who she had run into.

Jenny wanted Chinese. Instead of having it delivered, like every person on the planet, Shane offered to run and pick it up. It wasn’t that far from their apartment and she wanted the excuse to be outside, breathe the fucking fresh hair, and smoke. The brisk walk could be enough to erase all signs of nicotine from her clothes, otherwise she’d be forced to change into something else as soon as she got home. Funny, how people become so intolerant of any reminder of past bad habits. She didn’t feel that way. Of course, she hadn’t exactly given up all of her bad habits… at least not for good. 

She went into the restaurant and rubbed her hands together, immediately chilled by the atmosphere even though it had been so hot outside. She never thought she would look forward to the snow, but it would be a welcome respite from being thirsty all the god damn time. She took her phone out and answered a text from Jenny, her fingers flying over the screen with practiced ease. 

Here. Soy sauce?

Slipping her phone back in her pocket, she was about to pull out her wallet when her gaze fell on the girl standing in front of her. She tried not to notice other women (and failed, some of the time) so not to give into temptation (because she almost always did), but it was impossible not to note the familiar hairstyle, clothing and body, down to the curve of her ass.

Luckily she was not still staring when the girl turned around. Molly. Of course. Of course Molly would be here, because her week was turning into a horrible mimicry of Ghosts of Fucking Christmas’ Past and next, who would it be? Cherie? Her cynicism didn’t dull the feelings that resurfaced, however - and she was instantly reminded of that cryptic text she had sent Molly that night at Tina and Bette’s house, the night of the party. She had deleted it from her phone shortly afterward. Her feelings for Molly were different than what she felt for Carmen, what she felt for Jenny. Each of those relationships were wrapped up and placed in their own little box.

“Hey.” She laughed, shook her head, as if this were an entirely normal situation, but the feeling was forced. “Hey, Molly. What’re you doing here?”
