Flash can also create an illusion of the night as the exposure of the image is brighter in the front.
When shooting with the natural light you can choose to bring a flash-gun to expose details. The shot above is without flash, with natural shadows and lights hitting the model. The other image shows what happens when flash hits the subject. The flash exposes all the details of Aya’s face, clothing and even the background is lit up.
Shooting against the main (natural) light creates a very strong, well contrasted image. The quality of the photo seems to lift off the screen as the flash exposes details and highlights in the front while the natural (main) light fills from the back.
Flash Exercise.
High Key-Low Key Lighting. Hitting your face softly and harshly, must learn to control this.
Placing the Tungsten light at different positions creates different moods to the lighting. Manually moving the light also highlights different areas of the subject bringing in different dimensions and details. The first photo shows the right side of Jacks face highlighted creating this silhouette of mysteriousness. The contrast with Ayas back lit photo; highlighting her hairline and shoulders. This is seen and used a lot in CD covers!
Tungsten light test. Moving the light around, hitting the background creating soft shadows and hard shadows. The shadows need to be controlled better. Seeing as it is my first time using tungsten and light-metering I think the photos could be better!
Tungsten Lighting
The use of tungsten lighting has both benefits and drawbacks. The continuous lighting means you can get a good idea of how the photos will look as it is exactly how you see it in person. The colour temperature is quite orange so you will have to use gels to change it. Personally however I feel like tungsten is not my favourite to use just because it's so fragile and gets extremely hot! Be careful when using Tungsten Lights…
Week 2 Technical Workshop: Studio Lighting and Flashy Flash.
This was the very much anticipated Studio Lighting session! I have never touched a flash gun, nor have I been able to operate any studio lights. It all seems so foreign to me… but not after today! Each exercise demonstrates the different ways to use light meters, light modifiers and differences in the kind of light available in a studio (how to manipulate it).
