When a dragon dies and they have the gembond gene the gems don’t disintegrate and decompose like the rest of their body. Their crystals stay in the ground and only professional miners or experienced dragons can tell the different between gembond crystals or earth crystals. It’s considered bad luck to dig them up and take them because if a dragon died in distress their spirit could haunt the gems and the dragons who found them. Many dragon parents are afraid their hatchlings will bring them back to the clan. Starting a clan on top of soil that contains gems of a dead dragon will be a “cursed clan” that is bound to fail. The only way to stop the spirit from haunting you or cursing the clan is to dig up all the gems of the dead dragon, rebury them, and hold a funeral to give respect.

Reposting the first feathertop with it’s alt and baby counterparts~! As babies they are covered in a silky down that sheds as their adult feathers grow in. Males tend to develop larger head crests and a filled out nose horn. The thin horns that sprout from their brows can vary in directional curl and number-up to 5, with forward aimed and numerous horns indicating Nobility.

Here is some tentative lore on them:

As clans of the breed traditionally hold to a strict Feudal type social system, lesser horned dragons work under those with a higher number of brow horns, a kind of physical badge of rank one is born with. There is rarely intermingling between the working rank and the 4-5 horned Nobility- which consists of Warriors and Leaders. A Hornless brow or single horned brows are looked down upon and treated as lesser or an embarrassment to the clan. Since Horn number is thought to be able to be bred, Nobility usually mate with others of their rank. Hatchlings are under highly stressful scrutiny by their parent- watching their brow nubs splinter and begin to sprout near their first molting.

A tradition between clans is to cement alliances by trading their youngest 5-horned child between Ruling Families in arranged matings, and also to make sure the lineage of True Crowns, the name of dragons born with 5 horns, continues.

A comparison of the average size dragon of each breed against each other. I’ve taken into account approximate shoulder width when adjusting the wings, and the average length is the average of both male and female of each breed.

Keep in mind that each breed gets a lot bigger and smaller than the average – double in some cases.

Data is from the Dragon Census, except for Bogsneaks which has data from my own Bogsneak Census (which I’ve gotta update).

Here’s a version with Spinosaurus a. and Tyrannosaurus r. (from Wikipedia’s chart) thrown into the mix:
