what do u think about the movie???
Okay, so I have a strong opinion about making books into movies and with ACOTAR specifically, I am pretty upset. So my short response to this is that I am not happy about the news and I don’t want the books to be a movie. If you would like to continue reading to hear my rant, then welcome!
I spent the day at the March For Our Lives in Parkland and I am in a very ranty mood, so I apologize for being extra lol. I think that books are powerful because they let you create entire worlds in your head. They let you imagine the impossible and they let you feel good. Knowing that a movie could screw up the world I’ve made in my head makes me mad, especially because it’s my favorite series they’re talking about this time.
Let’s first start with the world.
The ACOTAR world is not that complicated, but it also isn’t simple. It’s not something you can create in a movie set without having some serious errors or missing important details. Magic is all over in ACOTAR and I do like some movies that use special effects WELL, but some are just trash. I believe that people (directors, producers, editors, etc.) should leave books alone because they give us the freedom to use our imagination.
When I watched the Maze Runner movies (after I had read the books) I thought they were okay. I hadn’t thought much about casting because that had already been announced when I started to read them. However, the big issues came when I tried to reread the series. I know a lot of people didn’t like that series, and while it wasn’t my favorite, I still would have read it again. During my (attempted) reread, all I could picture was what I had seen in the movies. I pictured Dylan O’Brien as Thomas the entire time and I pictured the world as how I had seen it in the movie the entire time, and I had to put the book down because I couldn’t put everything back to how I had seen it before I watched the movie.
I think missing key aspects in the ACOTAR world will be easy, but this point is one of my biggest because if a movie ruins my imagination, especially my favorite book, it’s hard for me to recover. That’s just me, though.
So, as far as I’ve seen, I don’t think I’m entirely alone about this. I do not think there is a single male out there who can play Rhysand. I would like to point out that they would not only have to look like him, but also be a GREAT actor. Many people in the fandom find models and post about fancasts which I fully support, but now that there’s an actual movie (possibly) being made, we need to think about acting, as well. Let’s take Toni Mahfud, for example. I do not fancast him or see him as Rhysand, but since a lot of the fandom seems to have him picked out as Rhys, I’ll use him. He might look like Rhys, but what about his acting? He’s a model, which is great, but has he ever acted? Would we want his very first acting role to be as the High Lord of the Night Court?
Maybe that’s just me, but I think the acting portion is equally as important as the looks. Rhys is sarcastic and arrogant and funny, and someone would need to portray all of that perfectly in order to get my vote. And that’s just talking about Rhys! Don’t even get me started on every other character.
From what I’ve seen, it looks like ACOTAR might be made into a movie, not a TV show. This is what gets me concerned. Movies can’t be 6 hours long and you can’t cut the first book into 5 separate movies, meaning there will have to be a lot of information cut out. ACOTAR is not my biggest concern in this part, it’s actually ACOMAF.
ACOMAF is my favorite book because we got so much world building and character development, and I do not believe for a second that a movie could fit that all within 3 hours. We love ACOMAF because of the little details like Rhys teaching Feyre to read, sending each other notes at night, training and bantering, Azriel and Cassian bantering, Chapter 55 (which won’t be shown on television or in movies unless it’s R or something), so missing out on even the tiniest details will be very easy.
I would definitely prefer ACOTAR as a TV show over a movie to get more detail in and include everything we love.
If this movie comes out, I will still watch it. I will watch it because it is my favorite book, and what happens if (with some small miracle) the movie turns out to be good? I may not agree with everything, but I will still support SJM and watch it. If I don’t end up liking it, then fine. Done. I won’t watch it again.
I am not excited and until I see A LOT more about this, then I won’t believe it, but yes, I would still watch it. And before I get trash talked in my ask box, I would like to add that this is all my opinion. If there’s anything I’ve learned in the past month or so, it’s that people are going to have different opinions than you but don’t waste your time being angry at them. Focus on yourself.
