Hanging Out at the Spin Axis of the Earth

Polaroids at the South Pole One of my projects at the South Pole this November will be to locate the exact Pole at 90 degrees South with my GPS, set up my tripod, and shoot a series of photographs with a Polaroid Land Camera loaded with B&W peel apart film.
South Pole trip coming up! I'm traveling to the South Pole with the National Science Foundation in 2 months!. I'll be at McMurdo Station for a few day before flying on the Pole itself for a week of photography.

Djupavik, Iceland
I stayed a couple nights in Djupavik at the Djupavik Hotel, a former dorm for women working at the Djupavik Herring Factory. I highly recommend this corner of the country. You have to really want to get here, but it is worth the effort.

Extreme North
Yesterday I drove to the far north of the Melrakkaslétta peninsula, where the Arctic Circle is only a couple kilometers offshore. It’s as far north as you can go in Iceland without taking a boat to Grimsey. It’s a bleak landscape with rocks, lichen, moss, grass, and thousands of birds arriving for the summer.

Iceland in the Rain
First day in Iceland brought out the rain and wind. When I say wind I mean WIND. 30 -40 mph with gusts that knock me off balance. Here are a few shots from the drive from Snaefellsness Peninsula to Djupavik in the West Fjords. There is an old herring factory in Djupavik that I will write more about tomorrow.
