This man has been a #gay #mentor or like a gay #father figure to me over about 30 years of #friendship. Both of us are #Leo’s - and his name is Leo, too - we are here having our annual #birthday lunch. Back when I was writing #features and #columns about my #gay life and experiences for the #queer publication, XTRA! many of the pieces I wrote were #inspired by long #conversations we’d share over a J about our experiences in #Toronto’s gay social / #sex scene; Leo was always one of the #audience I kept in mind as I wrote anything humorous, too. If I thought Leo would find what I wrote #funny, I kept it. Everyone should be so #blessed to have a strong figure in their lives, who takes them seriously, is curious, open-hearted, to whom you can tell anything, and who #inspires you as Leo has done for me, for three wonderful decades. #TBT The #poster for the first #play I appeared in when I threw away my #finance #career and #reinvented myself. The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told by Paul Rudnick was a #queer take on The Greatest Story Ever Told, featuring Adam and Steve instead of Adam and Eve. I was Steve, running around at certain points in nothing but a leaf-covered #jockstrap. The play is insanely clever, time shifts, and was a joy to be part of. The coolest part of this experience is this: I had auditioned for the play while still in the final days of my finance career, wrapping it up and preparing to re-create myself. On day one not being in finance anymore I was having a coffee when y phone rang at 9am - I was offered the part of Steve. I didn’t even have five minutes, let alone a day of doing nothing. Off I went into life anew. I believe in #signs from Universe and certainly took this immediate #gig as Universe’s way of assuring me that in choosing to follow my #dreams, I would never go wrong.
