Drama Club: An Evening with Desdemona and Emilia

Shakespeare’s Othello is known famously as a play about race and jealousy – but it’s also a play about sexual politics. Public Forum puts Desdemona and Emilia, two of Shakespeare’s greatest creations, center stage for a timely look at gender roles throughout the ages. The evening will feature Cynthia Nixon as Emilia, Uzo Aduba as Othello, Heather Lind as Desdemona, Tiffany Rachelle Stewart, Liz Roberts (of Safe Horizon, the largest domestic victims service agency in the country) and more.

Domestic Femicide Now and in Early Modern England

As we read the femicide at the end of Titus Andronicus, consider these sources:

The author notes that four women are killed in domestic situations every day in the United States.

"Domestic killings formed a smaller proportion of all homicides in the Elizabethan and Stuart periods than in the mid-twentieth century." The author goes on to say that they made up 25% then whereas in the mid-20th cent. they made up 50-66%
