So. I guess this goes back to a couple of weeks ago. Jared somehow convinced me that he owed me a surprise. It started out as just owing me one surprise, but it somehow escalated and became 2 surprises and a present.Â
Anywayssss. Last night, like all Monday nights, I got out of class at 6:00 and was ready to go home and just be done for the night. Jared came and picked me up from school and we went back to my apartment. The moment I walked into my living room, I flopped down on the couch and started complaining about how much studying I had to do to be prepared for classes on Tuesday. (Jared got a little frustrated cuz I didnât immediately go back into my bedroom and kinda chuckled to himself, knowing that there would not be much studying getting done that night)
We sat on the couch a while and I told him that I wasnât going to cook dinner & we could go to my FHE group because they were having pizza. We had some time to kill so I figured we could start on my studying for my Bible as Literature class (sometimes he studies it with me :) ) So I got up and went back into my room to get my books and when I opened my door, this is what I saw:
(Side note: The week before he asked me to be his girlfriend, he heart attacked my house/front yard and left flowers. :) )
I read the letter that he had left on my desk, went back out to the living room, and found him laying on the couch.  He smirked and asked where my books were. :p After I said thank you and told him how wonderful and great he is, he said, âSo now that youâve gotten your first surprise, do you want to get some dinner and your second surprise and present?â Of course I agreed and he suggested that we go to Cubbyâs. Iâd been wanting take him there since we got up to Provo so I was happy with that.
After dinner, we got back in the car and he was like, âSo, I forgot to look up directions so can you find directions to the American Fork Boat Harbor?â
I said âWhat?! Boat Harbor?! Where could there possibly be a boat harbor in American Fork?!â And I silently thought to myself, Oh goodness. Heâs not proposing tonight. He didnât even get directions to this place. Thereâs no plan here!
So we drove down the freeway for a while and when we got off, we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere. As we were driving down the road, we started to see signs that said âJOIN THE ZOMBIE WARââI think itâs some sort of Halloween maze thing or something. But anyways, as soon as I saw them, I was like, âOhhhhh heckkkkk no. We are NOT going to go do that.â (Iâm so incredibly scared of the dark/zombies/ghosts/Halloween stuff like that)
Thankfully, passed all of the signs and ended up at the American Fork Boat Harbor. The sign said it was like 10 bucks to get in so I suggested that we just park outside and walk in. Jared was just kind of like⌠Nahhh. I think we should go in. So we ended up going in and from the parking lot, we could see the boat slips. I totally thought we were going to just go down and walk around the boat slips. (That was what we did on our first date, down on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach.)
But then he drove right by them and I was like hmm. Ok. I guess itâs not thatâŚ
So we ended up out on the end of the jetty. It was really beautiful. It was surrounded by water on 3 sides and the sun was low in the skyâthe golden hour, AKA my favorite time of day :). (However, itâs still the tail end of summer and golden hour at Utah Lake=MOSQUITOS. Hahah. They werenât as bad as they looked from inside the car, but they were still pretty bad. Bahaha.)
Anyways, we got out of the car and he opened up the trunk. I looked in and there were a buuuunch of those floating paper lanterns. I had been telling him for WEEKS that I wanted to do floating lanterns so I was basically I was STOKED to see them :) We started pulling them out of the trunk and setting them up. By the time we were done, we had quite a spread. (He had bought 20 of em!)
We lit three off and decided that it was taking wayyyyyy too long.
So we folded them all back up and decided that we would do the rest with my friends sometime later.
As we were putting the last one back in the car, he said, âSo are you ready for your present now?â
Of course I said yes and he pulled this box out of the trunk. It was about the size of half of a shoebox and wrapped in a brown paper bag. (A couple of days ago he asked me if I had any wrapping paper and I told him to just wrap it in a paper bag. :p) So I unwrapped it and saw that it was his stethoscope box. I opened it and there was nothing inside. It was getting dark outside so I figured that I just couldnât see what was in there. I tipped it into the light and asked him if it was supposed to be empty. He leaned in and looked too and kinda made it seem like it was supposed to have something in it.
After letting me stand there all confused for a minute, he took a step back and said some really cute things, got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and said, âWill youââ
At this point, I squealed, jumped on him, and said YESSSSSSSS!
I mean, I did let him finish his question EVENTUALLY. But hey. You canât blame me for being excited. :)
Note about the ring: Itâs a stand-in ring until my real one comes. However, Iâve always wanted a pearl ring, but when I actually started looking at rings, I realized that I donât want to get a pearl because theyâre not very durable and Iâd have to take care of it a lot. SooooâŚthis way, I get to have my pearl for a little bit until my real ring comes :)
I saw this quote on Pinterest the other day and it inspired me to look up the talk that it came from. It's a fantastic talk, and I encourage everyone to read it.
This quote really stood out to me. I think I've been focusing a lot on the financial future of my future family. While I would like to be comfortable and not have to worry about whether or not we will be able to help my kids make it through college, I am coming to realize that that really shouldn't matter that much to me. I know that if I do the best I can and work with my future husband, we will be blessed with everything that we need to further the kingdom of God here on the Earth.
Hi! My name is Luke, i am from Minnesota and just stumbled upon your blog and the story you wrote about sharing in church. cool! so here is a little about me. I was raised lutheran, and never believed in christ. In college i lost all hope and asked God to save my life. I go to a church in minneapolis called the Rock, our churches mission is to share the Gospel of Christ's death and the hope that his resurrection gives us. I would really be interested in learning more about your mormon faith.
Hey Luke! Wow! Thanks for having the courage to message me! :) And it's interesting that you would say that that is the mission of your church--it's part of our mission too! We have three basic goals:
Proclaim the Gospel--like your church!
Perfect the Saints--Saints being those who have come unto Christ and been baptized into our church. And perfect through church attendance, temple attendance, prayer, scripture study, service, and other aspects of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Redeem the dead--We believe that in order to return to live with our Heavenly Father, we all must be baptized and complete certain ordinances here on the earth. This work occurs in all of our temples around the world!
One thing that really sets us apart from other churches is that we believe that we have the proper authority to act in the name of God, which we call the Priesthood. When Christ died and the last of his apostles died, the Priesthood was taken from the Earth. We believe that in the 1800's both Christ's true church and the Priesthood were restored to the Earth through Joseph Smith. Today, we are a worldwide organization and proclaim the gospel in the way we speak, live, and worship.
The Book of Mormon is the cornerstone of our religion and I know that reading it and praying about it WILL give you the answers you are looking for.Â
That was probably a longer answer than you were looking for, but I hope it answered some of your questions! Feel free to ask me more and if you would like a copy of the Book of Mormon, I'd be more than happy to figure out a way to get one to you! :)Â
âHappiness does not depend on what happens outside of you but on what happens inside of you; it is measured by the spirit with which you meet the problems of life."
But a couple of weeks ago, I made a goal to share my testimony/church things through social media more often and honestly, I've kind of been slacking. So get ready. Church things are on the way, the first of being my talk that I posted a couple of days ago. Check it out.
I spoke for about 20 minutes and I said a lot of things that I've been wanting to say for a long time. Feel free to read, or not read, but there's some pretty good stuff in here if I do say so myself. This has been my life over the last 7 months, and I know that I would not have it any other way.
I felt kinda weird using the words "sex" and "STD" over the pulpit... but hey. It had to be done in order to get my point across.
The Choices We Make and the People We Affect
Well. Last week, my parents both spoke in fifth ward. My dad said a couple of things that kind of sparked something in my head and when I got home, I sat in my backyard and just wrote in my journal for about an hour. When I finished, I went inside and said to my dad, âYou know what? Itâs a lot easier to write church talks when youâve written in your journal a lot. Now I guess I just need to be asked to speak!â Then after church last week, Brother Fenn asked me to speak! And I was like sweet! That worked out nicely!
So he pretty much asked me to just catch you guys up on my life and whatâs been happening with me. In order to kind of get some structure for my talk, I went back through my journal over the last couple of months and indexed different topics.
Iâm going to jump around a bit, but try to stay with me. Last week, my dad spoke on personal worthiness and it really made me think about my day at work the day before.
So I work for a valet parking company with about 50 employeesâand only 2 of us are girls. As you can imagine, with so many nonmember guys around, conversations are not always the most wholesome. I mean, I know that they tone it down when I am around, but for the most part even those conversations are pretty vulgar. And after working just a couple of shifts, Iâve learned two important things from this entry level, minimum wage job: 1) STAY IN SCHOOL. and 2) Donât take the company of worthy priesthood holders for granted
Anyways, each shift I work with different guys and naturally we begin the shifts with the same basic questionsâWhere are you from, what high school did you go to, Where are you going to school now? And, well, when they find out that I go to BYU, they instantly know that Iâm Mormon and the typical questions ensueâthey ask all about my drinking and smoking habits (or lack thereof) they ask if Iâm married or if I would date a guy who isnât Mormon, about our special underwear and if Iâm going to serve a mission. Every now and then when things get slow, and they often do in the valet business, one of the guys will ask a more in-depth question.
Last week, I was working with a young man who was quite inquisitive about the church and my personal beliefs and it was only after writing in my journal last week that I thought of the right words to say to him. He asked me if would ever date a nonmember. I told him that I did for quite a while. And he asked, âWell why would anyone ever break up with you? What could go wrong? I donât really see what problems you could have if youâre not doing all the normal things.â I assumed that to him ânormalâ relationship enders were alcohol, drugs, cheating, and the like. I told him that there was one major thing that stopped the progression of that relationship: I was and still am a faithful member of this church and my boyfriend was not and would not be in the foreseeable future.
The guy thought for a bit and said âWell, I just donât understand why you would ever close yourself off to many things. Havenât you ever wanted to drink? Havenât you ever wanted to smoke? Havenât you ever wanted to have sex? There are so many great guys out there and I canât imagine just shutting yourself down like that.â
Well, as the day wore on, I learned of his drunken partying the night before, the possibility of an STD from his weekend in Santa Barbara, the unborn child that he fathered in high school, and two stints in rehabâall consequences he had experienced by the ripe old age of twenty-one.
I didnât get a chance to really talk to him again because we had to get to work, but looking back I canât help but see the irony in the situation. He who has been âfreeâ in his choosing has been weighted down by his choice to yield to the temptations of drugs, sex, alcohol, and worldly living. He came to work, still thrashed from the night before. Even his viewpoint on women is skewed. He purely sees bodies and faces, instead of minds and spirits. He left me wondering if he would ever truly be able to love a woman once age and time made her no longer physically pleasing to him.
And I found myself asking, âWho is free?â Who does not need alcohol to have a good time? Who does not need drugs to feel happy? Who does not need sex to be in a pre-marital relationship? The freedom that I have from living the gospel has made me the person I am today. I am not âclosing myself offâ or âshutting myself downâ. From what I can tell, the more I live righteously, the more I stay true to the things that have been taught, and the more I am able to share my blessings with those around me. So yes, I may have slipped last week when I was talking to this young man at work, but now I know what I will say if anyone ever asks me questions like this. I know that my righteous choices and actions truly set me free and that as I continue in the faith, I will be blessed for it.
I found this quote this quote from Delbert L. Stapely from Conference in April 1975. It reads:
âMan cannot receive the exaltation God has provided for him without exercising his free agency in righteousness and in obeying His laws and commandments. Free agency, if properly and wisely used, can bring opportunities for service in the kingdom of God. It will provide us with many choice heavenly blessings and an eternal celestial life of joy and happiness.â
I have seen this principal of the gospel over and over in my life throughout the last year. As Iâve strived to exercise my free agency, Iâve been so incredibly blessed to share the gospel and serve the Lord. As many of you probably know, a couple of months ago, I was very close to serving a full time mission.
I guess you could say that it all started last February. Starting in February2012. That was when I truly began thinking about going on a mission. Well, by the time conference came around last October, I had really thought about it a lot.
When the age change announcement came out, it was an answer to my prayers and I took it as my one final push to goâthe timing in order to fit in with my school schedule was right, my parents could support me financially, I had the willingness to go and it truly felt like the right thing to do. So, I diligently began to study the Book of Mormon and Preach My Gospel. I would wake up a half hour early to make sure that I would get my daily study in. I stepped up my temple attendance and truly developed habits that I know I will have for the rest of my life. I received my call and continued to prepare for my mission. It was truly one of the hardest semesters that Iâve ever hadâI was taking the most credits that Iâve ever taken in a semester, but as I continued in faithful scripture study, I was always able to balance work, school, and church. I even ended up getting the highest GPA that Iâve ever had in college so far. I know that as I made my spiritual growth a priority in my life, and used my time building up my knowledge and testimony of the gospel, I was truly blessed in all aspects of my life.
Anyways, back to my mission call. You see, pretty much from the moment I got my call, it just did not seem right anymore. And as I continued on preparing to leave, I knew that I was doing the right thing in preparing for a mission, but I wasnât convinced that I was doing the right thing in deciding to go on a mission. I had the desire to serve the Lord, but I just could not seem to feel right about going.
The day I told my parents that I would no longer be serving a mission was one of the hardest days of my life. I was so scared what others would say and what people would think. In my eyes, back then at least, the only acceptable reason to turn down a mission call was marriage. And since I was no where even near marriage, the thought of turning down my mission call disappointed me. I was so frustrated and disappointed with myself, but I just did not feel right about going on a mission. Hereâs an excerpt from my journal right after I told my stepmom about my decision.
âWell, I just talked to Kris. She really does always know the right thing to say⌠she said that Iâm trying to see all that Heavenly Father has in store for me, but in my finite mind, I canât see the end from the beginning and thatâs probably the complete wrong thing to do. She helped me realize that at this point in my life, the harder thing to do is going to be swallowing my pride and letting people know that this isnât right for me in my life. Courage to me right now is being able to tell people about my decision.â
I knew that there was some sort of scripture that said something about that and later I went back and cited in my journal. Itâs Mosiah 4:9 and it reads:
âBelieve in aGod; believe that he is, and that he bcreated all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all cwisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not dcomprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend.â
This scripture has come to mean so much to me over the last couple of months. It has given me comfort and peace in the times when I needed it most.
In late January, one of my friends was going through a really rough time in her life. She texted me super early in the morningâlike 4 or 5 and for some reason or another, I woke up and looked at my phone. I donât remember it going off or even why I woke up, but I did and I was able to talk to her and help her. I was able to tell her things that I am confident that no one else could have or would have told her at that moment. That night, I wrote in my journal,
âI bore my testimony to her of the power of the atonement and that I know that it has worked for me and that it can work for her too. I truly felt the spirit this morning and I know that even if I end up staying home and not going on a mission, there is important work for me to do here.â
I guess you could say that that was the first time that I could really see the reasoning behind Lordâs plans for me to not serve a full time mission at this point in my life. I had the feeling that my friends and loved ones would need me. The spirit spoke to me and felt prompted that something was going to happen that I would be the only person to be able to fix the situation or help the situation. It was kind of a scary feeling. I really had no idea what could possibly happen.
A couple of weeks after this experience (after I had already made the decision to no longer serve a full time mission) my dad called me. He told me that my grandpa would be moving in with him and my stepmom indefinitely and that they were having a hard time. He asked me if I would move back home as soon as possible. Because I had decided to serve a mission, I took half-semester classes and I was done with school in late February and I was able to come home. Of all of my siblings, I was the only one who was really in the position to move back home. As Iâve been here and just been able to help out, Iâve come to realize that there is no other place that I need to be. As Iâve been able to help out my family, Iâve had multiple instances that Iâve realize that it truly was an inspired decision that I am home right now and I am thankful that I am here to serve in any way that I can.
So, back to my mission call again. I was to report to the MTC April 10th, which meant I would have about 2 months to move back home and pretty much just wait to leave. My mom had always wanted me to go over to germany to meet my stepfamily and had tried to convince me to go with her last February. But since I was in school I wasnât able to go. With the two free months between school and my mission, it was decided that I would go to Germany all by myself.
I bought a plane ticket and as the date drew nearer, loose plans were made, but for the most part, I really had no plans for my time in Germany. There were so many things about the trip that really should have made me nervousâI was traveling alone internationally and one of my flights was canceled and I was stranded in New York City for 8 hours. I finally got to Germany after over 24 hours of travel time, my luggage, however did not. I was in a country where I knew no one, didnât speak the language. I had no cell phone service and no clothing except for what I had on my body. I knew that once I met my stepdadâs family I would have to lay out the ground rules surrounding drinking alcohol and that alone should have scared meâdrinking is so widely accepted and people really thought I was crazy for not drinking.
However with all of these things that should have made me scared out of my mind, I was at peace and not really scared of anything. Through it all, I knew that I would be ok and that no matter what happened, if I just stayed strong to what I knew to be right and pressed forward when things were going wrong, I would be ok.
After all the delays of weather and lost baggage, I finally made it out of the airport and found my step aunt. As we got to know each other on the drive home, I quickly realized that any of the worries I should have had were really unnecessary. Hereâs my first journal entry after arriving in Germany:
âMan, this trip has been wonderful so far. Gudi is so wonderful. Ah! I love her. She has such high standards and believes in doing good and being good. And get this⌠she and her husband do not drink alcohol! Germans that do not drink alcohol! How bout that?! Itâs great. Thereâs no need to feel uncomfortable around them. I invited them to church with me⌠but weâll see.â
Now looking back, that last part really stands out to me. Iâve never really been one to really bear my testimony outside of sacrament meeting and inviting people to church has always scared me to death. But as I prepared to serve a mission, I saw that change within myself. I saw myself become willing to share the gospel and invite others to come unto Christ. Last week, when my dad was speaking, I didnât write down exactly what he said, but he said something to the effect of:
âOur testimonies will grow as we open our mouths and let the Holy Ghost work through us.â
Throughout my trip in Germany, I truly saw this principal in action as I visited various members of my stepfamily. Naturally, they were all very curious about my faith and as I told them about my beliefs, I could feel my testimony growing stronger inside of me the more I shared it, the more I wanted to share it. As I got to know my stepfamily more, the more I wanted to help them come unto Christ and be saved.
After returning home, people would ask me ok, what was the BEST part of your trip. Everyone knows that I am an avid foodie and they were probably expecting me to talk about the great schnitzel, bread, cheese, chocolate, and other wonderful things that I had while I was there.
But the amazing food did not hold a candle to the amazing spiritual experiences that I had with my stepsister, Kathy. She is almost exactly 10 years older than me and before this trip, we had only met in person once when I was 10 years old and exchanged a couple emails in the previous months. She was not on facebook, so I really had no idea what was going on in her life or what she had been up to for the last 11 years. As she told me of all of the hard things she had endured I quickly realized how blessed I was and am to have the gospel in my life. Kathy passed through the lowest of lows and had such a hard time, simply because she did not have the gospel in her life.
She did not have the righteous role models that I have always had and she did not have a healthy view of her self worth. At times, it seemed as though she had lost sight of the fact that she too was a Daughter of God and that she needed to act and deserved to be treated as such. It was heartbreaking to listen to her talk about the 11 years that we had been out of contact. In these 11 years, Iâve been so blessed to have the gospel in my life. To have my dad and stepmom who have raised me in truth and righteousness. To have strong youth leaders who have helped me along and truly cared for and loved me. And as Iâve been away from home, Iâve come to know of the truth of the gospel and cleansing power of the atonement for myself.
As we talked, I felt inspired to invite her and her boyfriend to church with me. She loved the idea and really wanted to learn more about the gospel. As I sat in sacrament meeting, I wrote the following passage:
âWell, [we drove through a pretty crazy snow storm, but] we made it to church. And it really is true all over the world. It is such a comfort to know that wherever I go in the world, I can find willing saints who will welcome me with open arms. I really enjoyed singing the hymns in GermanâŚI was only able to piece them together in German because I knew what they meant in English. Now the speaker is speaking and I REALLY donât understand anything. Every now and then Iâll pick up a word, but really not much. I really hope Kathy and Marcel are getting something out of it. Well⌠It seems to be going well. Every now and then Kathy nods her head and smiles at what the speaker is saying. When the first speaker bore his testimony at the end of his talk, I felt the spirit so strongly. Man. The gospel is true in every language. Oh, I love it so much.â
So later that week, I had the opportunity to do a session in the Frankfurt temple. I Gudi and Kathy came along and walked the grounds and waited in the mini visitorâs center while I was in the temple. When I came out, they of course had many questions for me. As we talked, Kathy said to me, âI know itâs only been a couple of days, since we went to church, but I really want to go back. I miss the nice feelings that I had while I was there and I am a bit jealous that you got to go in the temple and I could not.â I was pretty much blown awayâthough I had been a member my whole life, I had never really brought anyone to church or really lived up to being a member missionary. I was amazed at how happy spreading the gospel made me feel.
They ended up coming to church with me the next week, and the third week I was there, Kathy did not come with me because she was sick---but Marcel and I still went. He does not speak very much English and I do not speak very much German and we really did make a funny pair. Anyways, on my last night in Germany, I gave them a copy of the Book of Mormon in German. I bore my testimony in the inside cover and marked about 20 or 30 scriptures that I really like. I was only going to mark a few, but as I sat in my room, marking scriptures, I found that there were so many that were so meaningful to me.
As we were talking on that last night, they told me that because of my example they wanted to change their way of life. They said that they love the way I live and called it âShelby Style.â They told me that I inspired them to stop smoking and stop drinking. They said that that they wanted to continue going to church and Choosing the Right. I thanked them and told them that it really canât be attributed to me. I am just living in the best way I know possible. The way of the Lord has been laid out for me and I am just living as best I can. I encouraged them to do the same and testified that it is the one true way to happiness.
Today, 8 weeks later, neither of them has touched a cigarette. They slipped a little bit on the alcohol but have drastically cut down. This is where the story kind of saddens me, but I definitely have hope for a bright future. They both got very bad intestinal infections right after I left and were unable to go to church for a couple of weeks. When they finally made it to church, they did not feel the same spirit that they felt when I was there.
On Motherâs Day, they spent the weekend with my step grandma and ended up going to her evangelical church with her and really enjoying it. Last week, Kathy emailed me and said that she would like to attend the Evangelical church in her city because it is what is comfortable and what she grew up with. This news brought me so much sadness but in the end what has comforted me is that I know that I did all that I could do to show her the Lordâs way to happiness.  I know that SOME church is better than NO church and I am glad that she has been inspired to learn more about spirituality.
By living the gospel and staying true to what I know to be true, I as able to influence those around me for the better. Though she may not be joining the church any time soon, I find comfort in the fact that I was able to give her a glimpse of the happiness that I enjoy as a worthy member of this church. I continually pray that they will realize that though they may feel the spirit in this Evangelical Church, they are not receiving the whole truth of the gospel. I pray that they will be hungry for the full truth and light that our church can offer them.
Looking back, our meeting in March was not by chance and was indeed divinely inspired. So many things had to fall into place in order for it to occurâfrom our parentsâ divorce, to my decision to go then to not go on a mission, my decision to go to Germany.
The Visiting Teaching Message for January of this year dealt with Missionary Work. It included a quote from Elder Uchtdorf that I would like to share. He said:
âThe Lord ⌠entrusts a testimony of the truth to those who will share it with others. Even more, the Lord expects the members of His Church to âopen [their mouths] at all times, declaring [His] gospel with the sound of rejoicingâ⌠Sometimes a single phrase of testimony can set events in motion that affect someoneâs life for eternity.â2
To me, every day is a manifestation of why I am here and why I need to live worthily to receive the promptings of the spirit. This last year has really been turbulent for me, but it has also been one of the best years. I have learned so much about myself and about the importance of spirituality in my life. I know that as I live up to the covenants I made at baptism and that I have made in the temple, I will be blessed and will be able to share those blessings with those around me. As I continue to share my testimony, both in word and deed, I have great power to influence those around me. I have been placed in so many circumstances where I have been given the opportunity to share my testimony and I know that as I take those opportunities, I have truly grown. I know that righteous use of my free agency has set me free and that I am able to enjoy life free of worldly bonds. As I use my free agency, I am able to receive my own blessings and bless the lives of those around me. I have been blessed with so many opportunities and I am so thankful that I have been able to experience so many things at such a young age.
I have such a strong testimony of the gospel and I am so thankful to have worthy parents and leaders who have shown that to me. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
PS: Sorry about any spelling errors or mistakes, I'm only human. :p
