she thumbs through the different packets of tea, settling upon an herbal mix. it is easier, having something between them. a distraction, a physical barrier, anything to create some bit of distance.

' you're still allowed to feel as you do. that includes being upset with me. '

it isn't her that's the issue here, it's him. he wants to stop being upset with her, he wants to stop being upset at all of them. but he can't. emotions aren't something humans can control.

"it's not like i haven't made my own stupid choices. it's not like people i know haven't done stupid, terrible things. but i forgive them more than i forgive you. or father. what does that say about me?"

she sighs, taking a seat at the kitchen table. their relationship was strained, putting it lightly. the years hadn't been kind to their family. one might argue that the world had never been kind to them.

' i think it's a conversation that needs to be had. '

he sets a kettle of hot water between them, a mug in front of eve. a selection of tea is placed alongside the kettle. it's easier, having something to distract him. he's never liked these kinds of conversations.

"what do you want me to say? you're a grown woman, you're free to make the choices you want. it's wrong of me to judge you for them at all."

he busies himself in the kitchen instead of answering immediately. to say his relationship with his family is complicated would be an understatement, and with his parents more than anyone else.

"mother, i... i don't think that's a conversation either of us actually want to have."

I think we need to tell stories about characters, and not only, for example, whether you’re Black or White or Arabic or Asian. Usually there’s influence that leads a story and an environment to something more political that finally narrows the possibilities of telling stories. For example, in France when I have to answer that question, I usually say “Oh, you want to tell the story of a North African or French-African guy—just try not to always focus on where they’re from, why they’re here, the social problems, the political problems.” Nowadays, in our society you can find Black, White, Arabs, people from all over the world in different jobs, in different positions in every structure. If you tell the story of this guy, for example, like you said, “the taxi driver”—it could be everybody, as long as it’s believable… why not? We have lawyers from every ethnicity, bosses, cops, criminals as well, and it might be a good direction to start with.

When I was younger I remember my wife once told me ‘you’re cold as a tomb.’ I didn’t even realise that I would bring my character home so I started to work on myself and at some point I was like OK I start to take off my character’s suit and leave it at the door so I’ve learnt how to do it over the years.
