Tragedy strikes at every turn. Thatās what Matias grew up with. While the capital of Calisota was the most accepting area, Londontown stayed in the outskirts where destruction continued. Matiasā parents, KarinaĀ āDottieā Shepherd andĀ SebastiĆ”nĀ āDipstickā Shepherd, were concerned for the well being of their children. They basically were already living in Calisota, but the move wasnāt official yet.Ā
When Matiasā parents officially announced they were moving to Calisota, Matias and his siblings bounced up with joy. They were thirteen at the time, and it felt like a dream come true for the kids.Ā
That night, the house was packed and ready to go for the morning. Matias and his siblings could hardly sleep. They talked to each other while sitting on the floor. They just couldnāt believe their luck. His brother Diego and sister Isabella were the first to fall asleep while Matias just sat and day dreamed about what their new house would look like.Ā
Matias was pulled out of his trance and he realized the sun was rising in the sky. Had he really stayed up all night thinking about their home? Thatās what he thought until he saw that the time was only 2 AM. The alarm clockās red letters dulled at the light that was coming through the window. What was that? In seconds, Matias felt pressure in his body.
Shards of ceiling tumbled down onto the young teenagersā bodies. They were crushed down to the first floor of the house. The rubble was bringing unbearable pain to Matias. All he could think was I thought I was gonna finally be happy.Ā
Matias was left with his thoughts again. He heard his named called. He heard other calls of hope from his neighbors. He heard whispers from his brother. He was crying.Ā āMatty?ā Diego puffed out,Ā āTake care of yourself.ā
As a child, Matias was adventurous and emotional. Everything was either great or terrible. There was no in between. Matias was always needing help in situations. Thatās just how he was. When Diego puffed out those final words, Matias closed his eyes and tried to go to sleep. He wanted the nightmare to be over.
After the bombings, many were displaced, including Matias and his family. Diego and Isabella both passed away and were buried in Calisota. Matias was left with scars all over his torso and one distinct scar his neck. It was in the shape of the constellation Little Dipper.
Six years later, Matias has grown into a semi-well adjusted young man. Heās become very serious over his years in Calisota and has what many would describe as aĀ āresting bitch faceā. He doesnāt go by Matias anymore. The name is only reserved for his family. He goes by either Dipper or Shepherd.Ā
