           FEELS     SMILE     TUG    AT    HER    LIPS     ,     so    far    from   the    tears    which   stained   her   cheeks   but   moments   before    .     how    did    ginger    do    that     ?     feels   herself    nodding    as   she   stands    ,    a   deep   breath   taken   through   her   nose    .     ‘     yeah     .     yeah    ,    i’d   really   like   to   come   with    .    thank    you    ,    ginger    .    really     .    ’

          Lips glossed in a dark brown shade that tastes of COFFEE spring upwards. “ I knew you’d come to your senses, Midge. Trust me, this is exactly what you NEED. In my opinion, sick-days should include being HEART-SICK. Not that I ever feel that way. My heart is an impenetrable fortress, belonging only to stitches and vintage stores. ” She winks. For all anyone knows, that could be true.

                ‘     GINGER     ,     you   don’t   have   to    DO    this    .     ’     hand   is    pushed    against   her   cheek    ,    brows   furrowing   ,    still     doing    as    told    by   the   other   girl    .    ‘     we   have    SCHOOL     ,    and   you’re    already    missing    class     .     aren’t   you   worried   about    .   .   .    i   don’t   know    ,    your    GRADES    or   something    ?    you   know   we   could   just   as   easily   go     later    .    ’     didn’t   want   any    TROUBLE    over   her   .

         “ One day, I’m going to be a world famous designer –– I can skip a bio lesson or two. ” Ginger peers at Midge instead. “ Do you want to stay? I was going to go either way. ” She doesn’t need to know that either way meant AFTER-SCHOOL. Fine print wasn’t for everyone’s eyes. “ It’s up to you if you want to come or not; I’m not here to pressure you. ”

            “  pretty  much,  yeah.  “  she  nodded  with  a  smile.  “  i’ve  been  passionate  about  music  since  a  young  age.  i  couldn’t  imagine  a  life  where  i  don’t  pursue  it.  do  you  have  something  like  that  ??  “  curiously,  legs  crossed.

           “ That’s awesome. ” The word comes stressed with a glint in her eyes. So many of the other kids in their grade don’t’ know what the hell they’re doing with their lives... AMBITION... it’s an attractive trait. “ Yeah, I do; I’ve always loved fashion and costume designing. I love how it can completely transform someone. ”

     HEAD   FALLS   BACK   BETWEEN   BALLED   FISTS    ,    a  wave  of   SHAME   washing  over  her   .   couldn’t  help  but  feel  as  though  she  was  just   OVERREACTING    .    the  problems  between  her  and  moose  weren’t  problems  at  all   ;   she’d   KNOWN   about  kevin   .  it  wasn’t  until  the   REST   OF   THE   SCHOOL   DID   everything  seemed   so   hard    .   ‘   i’m  fine   ,   really  ginger   .   fine   .   ’

         She won’t push. Still, there’s an uncomfortable GUILT weighing on her like an itchy too-small sweater set. It just doesn’t feel right. So, Ginger thinks of what her mom would do if she were here. “ Get up, ” she tells Midge. “ Let’s get out of Riverdale for a bit. There’s this DOPE boutique in Dremer I want to go to, and they only let you in if you bring a friend. It’s like, crazy exclusive. ” She gives her an unsympathetic look, tapping her watch. “ Come on, you can cry into the racks there. ”

         Cheryl FORGOTTEN for the moment, Ginger let her colorfully patched backpack trail to floor with the jangle of the many keys attached to it. She didn’t kneel by Midge’s side ––– such an act was too patronizing, too Betty Cooper for her –– but she did let her hand graze her shoulder. “ Midge, seriously. I’m not going to push you to talk, but if you want to... ”
