tina turner is the second artist i have any real memory of hearing—a feat, considering how often music was on in my dad’s house, and how much of it he had, how many records and how varied they were. but tina came to me early, and has stayed with me my whole life. i never had a phase of thinking i was too cool to listen to my parents’ music with her like i did a lot of artists i came back to loving—i remember putting “what’s love got to do with it” on at a high school party and getting a noise complaint from the neighbours when a whole house full of teens started hollering along. the guy told the kid whose house it was “great choice” even as he was telling us to shut the hell up. dad always spoke of musicians he loved with a certain kind of reverence, but some got more than others; tina was up at the top, with bruce and the beatles and merry clayton and prince. she was great, she was so great, and she overcame so much, and i hope she is in peace now.
