Do not cry wolf; become it.
---that makes me cry inside, in my special angry place.
hittcrâ:
âwonât have to.â snitch, that is. âdonât have anyone tâ snitch to anyway.â eliot twists his beer around a few times before finishing it off and asking for another. this day just got a whole lot weirder and eliot really wasnât looking forward to continuing with it. âyou can bet your ass that if he finds out he wonât see it as a weird coincidence.â his beer is refilled. eliot glances at the bartender and offers him a half-hearted smile in thanks. he takes a long drag from it before twisting to look at her properly this time. âmy question is, what do you wanna know? how i left? why i left? how my experience âs different than yours? how i ainât dead?â the wound that damien moreau left behind when eliot high-tailed it out was raw and throbbing, and part of eliot knew it would never quite heal over.
Parker hums acknowledgment, âI cover my tracks.â Right now sheâs got someone who owes her a favor doing a job for her on the side to throw Moreau off her tail. Leaving her signature carefully. Just long enough that she could have this little chat.Â
âWhy donât you start with the âNot Deadâ thing. That sounds interesting.â
moneymovedâ:
the women coo and damien looks proud. âvery good, parker.â he praises her, lightening his pressure on her neck. itâs the same way one praises a dog who has played a game of fetch with you. he says little more as the women talk between themselves with the other man and food is delivered. itâs pasta. something as basic and plain as he could find. the only hope is she would eat it.
the over dinner conversation turns to business, this time in english and parker is all but forgotten among the discussions and the food.
At least they donât try to talk to her anymore. Sheâs grateful for that. And the fact that while noodles arenât cheerios, theyâre at least palatable. The sauce is a little fragrant for her taste, but itâs not awful. Still. She saw a corner store from the town car. Itâs a matter of a picked wallet and sheâll get her cheerios one way or another. Parker gives Damienâs sleeve a little tug, âWhereâs the restroom? Can I be excused?â
hittcrâ:
eliot says nothing for a moment and just watches her intently. sheâs not here for moreau. thatâs⊠interesting. and dangerous. eliot wets his lips and returns to his beer. âyou expectinâ a wounded animal or somethinâ?â itâs bitter. annoyed. because thatâs exactly what he is. âhe finds out youâve been seeinâ me heâs not gonna be happy, yâknowâŠ. might start thinkinâ that youâre thinkinâ about leavinâ him.â like eliot had. that wouldnât be good.Â
âDidnât know what to expect. Thatâs why I came.â She answers. The bartender hands her a drink she didnât order, states it came from a man down the way whoâs been making eyes at her. Parker doesnât even give him a glance before she asks the bartender to bring her a club soda instead. âIâm not chipped. I just delivered a payout so I have some off days. This is a funny coincidence. Thatâs all. You wonât snitch, will you?â

âwhat, he finally get tired of waitinâ for me tâ come back with my tail bâtween my legs?â eliotâs jaw clenches a little and he takes a moment to steady himself with a long pull of his beer. âyou must be parker.â everyone whoâs ever worked with moreau knows about her. his knew project. his new pet. or. less new now, he supposes.Â
âProbably. But Iâm not here for him.â She runs her hand along the barâs grain, tracing the shape of her wood with her finger. Sheâs on a looser leash these days, decided to see what a Post-Moraeu world would look like. Especially for someone like him. Heâd be furious if he knew. âYou seem different then I thought.â
â---So youâre Eliot.â Itâs not a question. She knows who he is. Sheâs seen Damienâs files and the papers and even if sheâs never really met him herself, she knows. Everything thatâs ever left Moreauâs side has long, deep claw marks. âHe said youâd be here. Not here-here. But close enough.â

damienâs hand, still resting on her neck, tightens when he notices she hasnât responded. heâs beginning to think showing off his newest acquisition to his empire was a mistake. though, damien is not one to back out halfway. he can fix this. he turns to parker, voice low and sharp, âbe nicer. youâre reflecting badly on me.â he hisses to her. turning back to continue his earlier conversation.
the woman gives a thin smile to the girl, but decides to see if shed can win her over, one last chance. âthat man.â he gestures to a man out the doorway, well-dressed and clearly affluent. âheâs wearing a watch. could you bring it to me?â her tone is condecending.Â
damien glances down at her, âgo on, parker.â he all but orders.
He never told her to be nice. Heâd told her to show up and speak when spoken to. That was the arrangement. She doesnât care how he looks and besides. Sheâd warned him that this would happen.Â
Parker doesnât say anything. Just stands smoothes the skirt out and walks past the man in the doorway, brushing his shoulder ever so lightly with her own. A few moments later she takes her seat again, places his watch, wallet, keys, and a little pearl-handled pistol on the table in front of them in a neatly arranged little pile. Maybe sheâs showing off. She doesnât like him treating and talking about her like sheâs stupid.Â
moneymovedâ:
the woman looks startled and annoyed. damien turns his head to look at her, raising a hand to rest in the back of her neck. a bit of pressure applied. a firm warning. âbehave.â he growls. âforgive her, sheâs socially inept.â he says to his company, a winning smile seeming to put the woman at ease. itâs the man who takes up talking now, casually chatting with damien in rapid serbian once more. damien frowns, shaking his head, his words in serbian are crisp and firm, âsheâs mine. i donât share.â it was as close to protecting parker as damien would get. because other hands on his pets meant things could go wrong. he could lose a very valuable asset. and that wasnât worth the money he was promised. parker was more valuable to him in one piece. to hell with emotional scaring of what was implied would do to her.
the woman tries again, âperhaps if you wore a little makeup with it.â she offers, kindly, though doesnât try to touch her again, seeming to have learned her lesson, âdear, make eye contact when you speak to someone. itâs not fitting of a young lady to not make eye contac with her betters.â
Parker seems to shrink a bit under his hand. Reminds her too much of some of her past foster fathers-- But now she has more to lose. She canât just scare him and get sent to a new family or run away. Thatâs not going to work this time.Â
And then she starts to talk again. Parker is getting annoyed. Sheâs never had the patience for makeup and she really hates eye contact. So Parker just idly twists the hair tie on her wrist. Doesnât respond. Doesnât even acknowledge her. Thatâs going to make things worse.
