y'all....petunia telling harry that her parents were proud of lily being a witch does not indicate that lily was a "golden child" in any way. it just indicates that they were proud of her and that petunia resented that. being proud of one child does not mean parents ignore the others, or are less proud. we know petunia was jealous of lily having magic, and we have to keep that in mind when we think about her.

also, why are we ignoring what sirius says about his own parents? he tells harry point blank that he often had his parents telling him how regulus was a much better son than him. that right there indicates golden child status...for regulus, not sirius.

honestly, and idk how common this is, but i'm more annoyed by the people who have tried to justify to me why they don't read my fic than those who just go "oh this isn't my cup of tea". like tbh i just, truly do not give a fuck if people don't read it?

sure some days i get discouraged and think "wow this one chapter isn't getting the response i wanted" because i'm human. but in general? people trying to justify to me why they don't read it feels like criticism i did not ask for. and also it's just not that deep?

personally i don't read most fanfic, and some i am actively avoiding while i work on mine because i don't want to accidentally be influenced. i'm just here to tell the story i want to.

hearing things like "oh, it's too long and i don't have the attention span" just has me going "didn't ask, don't care". i'm not changing how i tell my story so it's just???? okay???? and as an adhd person myself, attention spans don't improve if you don't work at it. but again, it's fanfic. do what's fun for you.

Why are your chapters so long? I want to read your fic but I am so overwhelmed by the word count!

hey so this has been sitting in my inbox a while, mostly because i've not been sure how to answer this, or even if i wanted to (in case you were some kind of troll, it's hard to tell on anon). sorry to keep you waiting. please know that my response is not meant to be abrasive or anything, though i know that some of what i say may very well sound that way.

truth of the matter is that if the word count or whatever is too much for what you like, don't read my fic. i am a firm believer in fanfic being fun, and you don't have to expand your horizons if you don't want to. i certainly do not when i read. 99% of ships are uninteresting or flat out awful to me, so i won't read most. and that's fine because this is for my own fun.

and my fic is not going to get shorter. some of the chapters might, but this fic was always going to start at the beginning of lily and james's sixth year and end with their deaths. i've always been upfront about that. could i have made things shorter? yeah. but i don't want to. just like how reading fanfic should be fun, so should writing it. and all my favorite stories meander a bit and really let you sit with the characters. that's what i'm doing here with this.

if you do decide you still want to try and read it, know that my chapters are broken up. there are always breaks within a chapter, either for a scene change, or a pov change (because yes, i do that too and i know many readers find that annoying, but idc), so if you need a break, there are many natural places to take one.

another truth is that if you're a reader who wants to get better at reading longer books/chapters, then the only way to develop that skill is to do it. the time will pass anyways, so if you're paralyzed by a large word/pagecount, you're kind of wasting your own time. sometimes you just have to start. or not. because again, fanfic is fun. i'm not really going to lose any sleep over someone passing over my fic because it's long. the right audiences will find it, and maybe you're not it. that's perfectly okay.
