[[beaten/shirt off meme]] Oriole sank her fingernails into the doorframe. She'd lived with enough field agents and fighters to know that panicking didn't help. "I can try and help," she said, "but I think you'll be happier if I call a doctor."

Matt grunted as he tried to move - but his body had taken too much. “No..No doctors.. “  

The last thing he needed was to be found out. He’d go away for a very long time, and then who would fight the battles he’d been fighting? He’d had worse, before. He’d survived that. He was determined to survive this, too. 

“I just … need…a little rest. And some stitches. Maybe some hard liquor.” 

He settled back into the couch, paler for having tried to get up, and out of breath.  “I’ll be fine.”  He wheezed, not at all reassuringly.

Matt snorted softly, but the crooked smile on his face grew wider and he lay back and let himself relax. “Something tells me I don’t have much of a choice.”   

He really was sorry she had to see this. Even sorrier that he was such a crappy liar. He knew she know he wasn’t telling the truth, but he couldn’t let her in on his secret. It could jeopardize both their safety.  

“What kind of guys do you tend to go home with?”  He asked, and then wagged his eyebrows gently. “On second thought, I probably shouldn’t ask that kind of question… they sound like the kind of guys that wouldn’t have much trouble beating up a blind guy for overstepping.”

“Honestly?” Oriole said. “I don’t go home with any guys.” She taped a gauze pad over the wound, her tongue sticking out of her mouth as she worked. “They aren’t really my type.” She sat back on her heels and sighed, surveying the rest of the damage. “I’m going to start cleaning off your face now.” As she dabbed the blood and grime off his forehead, she said, “What kind of guys do you bring home?”

Sometimes if you live long enough, your old home appears in the skies of Eastern Europe. Sometimes if you make it past this year’s apocalypse, you get a call asking if you want to come back. Sometimes if you’ve lived long enough and rough enough, you don’t ask how they got your number of what you’ll be doing. Sometimes you can go home again.

SHIELD fell. Oriole Edens got out. She has a car, some cash, and identities to burn. But she also has full backups of the SHIELD library system’s electronic holdings in her trunk, five deadly artifacts in the backseat, the living key to a nightmare machine riding shotgun, and HYDRA on her tail. She’s never been a field agent, but now disappearing is her best hope of surviving.

Now all she wants is to stop falling through the multiverse and find her way home.

“Steve.” She tried the name on and smiled up at him.

“It isn’t the hero thing. You just seem busy.” And people with code names probably didn’t have time or patience for a first timer’s nerves.

“A really rich guy who’s really into Norse mythology just put his collection up for auction in Madripoor to cover his debts. Some of it might actually be Asgardian, so I’m going in to find out.” She shrugged. “It barely counts as a field mission, except… Madripoor. And if we do have to take anything, we’ll technically be stealing from three different crime syndicates.”

He always figured that people tended to avoid him because of who he was. It never occurred to him that he gave off the impression that he was busy. Most of the time he wasn’t. Steve preferred to keep to himself most of the time and when he wasn’t busy he was running, sparring or trying to catch up on everything he had missed in the past seventy some odd years. "I’m sorry I gave you that impression,” he told her, offering a sympathetic smile. At some point he would have to change the way he was perceived. He wanted to be approachable to people. Instead it seemed as if he’d managed to keep people at arms length. “I’d offer to actually contact Thor but he’s off world at the moment. He’d got some things to handle back on Asgard. Hopefully it’s nothing Asgardian.” The last time something from Asgard ended up in the wrong hands it ended up being turned into a weapon. They definitely didn’t need something like that happening again. Not when they were having to track down stones that could end up being used against them.

“Actual Thor?” Oriole squeaked. “No. No, that’s okay.” Actual Thor? In her library? She swallowed and tried not to look too star struck by the idea. “It’ll be okay. We’ve found a few Asgardian bits and pieces before, and this guy’s collection isn’t giving off any energy signatures that can be read from a distance. There isn’t anything with a ton of power there.” She shrugged. “If there is anything, and I hope there isn’t, SHIELD can keep a lid on it,”

There’s a thing on Oriole’s windowsill.  It’s got wings and feathers and the shadows are alighting on her face just so that she looks like some wicked harpy summoned by accidental witchcraft to do her bidding.  The mischievous grin upon the valkyrie’s face is impossible to ignore and she’s got no idea that the poor woman who’s home she just intruded upon is an agent of the organization she is in fact running from at this exact moment.

Oriole does not drop her mug. She does not reach for the heavy stone bookend on a nearby shelf. Instead, she stares, adjusts, recovers, speaks.

“Probably not,” she says finally. “But you can have some tea if you want.” The thick black band in her hair ripples, then flows down her neck, onto her shoulder, and down her arm to encase the woman’s hand.

Akela wrapped an arm around her that was safe to touch, draped one of Ori’s arms over her shoulders, and supported her as she walked to the bedroom. “You’re gonna be ok. We’re gonna figure this out. Just rest until I get back.”

“I know,” Oriole said. She leaned on Akela as they walked. “You’ll help. It’ll be all right.” As soon as they reached the bed, she folded down onto it. “Are you going to be okay out there?” she asked, curling her knees up to her chest without noticing the rainwater soaking into the bedclothes.
