THE WORLD HAD CHANGED  ,   bringing darkness that dominated   –   that felt stifling and threatened to pull the very air from your lungs if you weren’t careful.   Nobody had been immune to its effects  ,   nobody had gotten through it unscathed  ,   and everyone had the same question.   Would it ever end ?  Noctis stood on the edge of the cliff.   Ocean hues looked out over the skyline at the buildings he could see in the distance  ,   a place he once knew as home.   A place that had been filled with as many happy memories as there had been bad ones.   The place he’d been born and raised  ,   and the place he would ultimately give his life.

Could he bring himself to lament a single moment that led him to this point ?   No.   Perhaps he wished he had done more or expressed more nevertheless there was little point in dwelling on thoughts of the past.   He glanced down at his hand   ,  curled into a fist.   Questions were raised in his mind.   Did he have the resilience to go through with what he needed to ?  Noctis hadn’t been unaided throughout the journey.   He wouldn’t be alone at the end either.   Their strength and courage were what had driven him.   It would be them that saw him through it.

A noise drew him from his thoughts  ,  the footfalls he would recognise anywhere.   They belonged to his Shield.     ❝ It’s almost over. ❞     The King conveyed quietly, though his eyes did not stray from the skyline ahead.     ❝ Tomorrow the sun will rise once more. ❞     There was a smile on his face, albeit a melancholy one.   Noctis wouldn’t witness the sunrise beyond the horizon.   He wouldn’t see the people rejoice that the long dark had finally ended.

❝ I’ve accepted what I need to do. I don’t want any of you to mourn for me. ❞    Noctis turned to face him then.  Goodbyes were always challenging in any context.   Yet one that spoke of forever ?  That was always going to be a bitter pill to swallow.  For Noctis  ,   it would be but a moment.  Yet  ,  the people he was leaving behind would have to deal with losing him.    ❝ Live your life, Gladio. Please, do it for me. ❞

Unprepared was he  ,  as the Shield bowed for what would conceivably be the final time.  Noctis rests his hand on his shoulder.   Optics illuminated in the little light they had.   Yes  ,  goodbyes were difficult – but this one was necessary. Giving up his life for the lives of the people he loved. It was a worthwhile trade, in Noctis’ opinion.

A very cheerful happy drabble for @argxntcm 😈 because FFXV wasn’t sad enough apparently.

He doesn’t know where he went wrong.

They faced dangers before, terrible ones, but they always made it out. Together, looking out for each other. He always managed to honor his oath and protect his king, albeit by carrying away some cuts and bruises. It didn’t matter, it never matters. His body, his spirit, they’re promised to a cause: protecting Noctis, no matter the cost. But oh, why does the cost have to be so high? There’s nothing Gladiolus wouldn’t give right now to have his own body be the price to pay for Noctis’ safety; his soul, his entire being, whatever it takes. Anything but this.

His muscles are strained to breaking point, the pull on his arms so strong they feel a second away from being torn off. His feet are dug into the ground, struggling to maintain their hold on the slippery stone. The chains are wrapped around his hands, cutting into his flesh so hard it draws blood. And yet, the pain is nothing compared to the anguish Gladio feels on the inside. If only letting it tear him apart would be the solution; but it isn’t. The only thing holding them both, keeping them alive, is him. Whether he gives up or dies makes no difference. All he can do is hold on.

—but he can’t do that forever. No help is coming, and even if he possessed the strength to stay like this until the end of time - they don’t have until then. He can hear the growls and wheezing, the distant drumming of dozens of clawed feet on the ground drawing closer. They’ll be here soon and then it won’t matter if Gladiolus can hold on or not - they’ll rip him to shreds and he’ll lose Noctis and Prompto.

          Let go, he hears Noctis’ voice call to him from the left. He sounds concerned, scared, but he speaks like the king Gladio always knew him to be. How must he feel, trapped in a cage dangling from a cliff above the water, just a few meters separating him from certain death, knowing that his life is quite literally in Gladio’s hands? Noctis was never the kind of man to sacrifice his friends for his own sake, but it seems to be his fate to watch them die in his place and never getting a say in it. Because they both know - they all know - that Gladio can’t let go.

Not of him.

It becomes so painfully obvious when Prompto speaks to him. He doesn’t sound as desperate as Noctis; in fact, he sounds terrifyingly calm. Like someone who’s accepted the inevitable while Gladio is still refusing to do so.           Please save Noctis, he says and Gladio’s heart near breaks in half. Prompto is calm but he can’t help notice the sadness that clings to each one of his syllables. He can’t turn to look at him, can’t see the tears on his face, but it’s enough to imagine them. This can’t be real. This can’t be what it all comes down to. Gladiolus’ teeth grind together as his boots slip on the ground and he groans from the effort of holding his position. The metal chains holding the cages slide over the rough rock, creating a sound that’ll haunt his nightmares. Gladio is sweating, his muscles burning, and his heart races in his chest. Despair is eating away at him, spreading through him like a wildfire, thoughts of how to save them both rushing through his head - one more useless than the other. There is only one way.

He has to let go of one to save the other.

     “I can’t—” he presses out between grit teeth. In his head there’s an endless mantra of this can’t be happening, this can’t be real. One last time he tries to gather all the strength he has left and do more than hold. Pulling at the chains he manages to draw them in, pull the cages back up a little, the grinding noise of metal against rock a signifier of his success this time. Just a little more, just a little longer—

There’s nothing Gladiolus wants to do more in this moment than to reassure Prompto that he owes him nothing. Especially not his life. He shouldn’t have to share in his burden - in his duty to the crown - just because he lost his heart to a son of Amicitia, bound to the fate of the king by blood and honor. —But who is he to send him from his side when this is where Prompto wants to be? And he does; Gladio has rarely seen such a fire of determination burn in the blond’s eyes, a fire that scorches all protest before it’s even voiced. He may not have been born into the duty of protecting the king, but he chose to do so anyway. He chose loyalty, a purpose - and he chose him.

He chose a future of war and battle and the possibility of a premature death.

Gladio’s hand comes up to cradle Prompto’s face, his thumb brushing gently over his cheek. His skin is soft and warm, his hair smells like home and sunshine and him. These are the things Gladiolus wants to remember.      “If I had any say in this, I’d send you as far away from here as I can,” he admits. He never feared the prospect of death - not his own, anyway - but ever since he lost his heart to those soft blue eyes, his courage has wavered.      “But I won’t.”

He leans down, sealing Prompto’s lips with a kiss, soft and gentle and filled with all the things he might not get to say anymore.      “If these are our last hours in this life, at least we’ll have spent them together. There’s no one I’d rather have at my side on this day.” Outside the thunder of the great war machines roars, thrumming through the earth and shaking the very walls of the palace. It will be their problem soon enough, but for a moment it’s all forgotten. For a moment the world is gone and time stands still just for them.

     “I love you. No matter what comes next.”

     ↳ Prompto and Gladio watch fireworks together.

The sky explodes in beautiful colors, bright red, green, purple, gold. It’s hard not to miss any of them, so quickly is their succession. It looks like stars raining from above onto the rooftops of Lestallum, briefly coloring the streets below in their particular shine. It’s just fireworks and yet it’s a spectacle Gladiolus can’t take his eyes off of. Between all the fighting and running this night of celebration and revelry is a welcome relief - and the fireworks in themselves feel symbolic of the hope they all seek in the growing darkness. There can be light and there can be life, even in the darkest of nights.

Next to him Prompto raises his camera to take a picture and Gladio tears his eyes away from the sky to look at him. To him, this night is something to be experienced rather than preserved. No picture could ever capture the emotions that are in the air tonight, but Gladio won’t stop Prompto from trying. They all have different ways of storing memories, and he would lie if he said he doesn’t enjoy looking at Prompto’s photos afterwards.

His eyes wander over the crowd until they fall on Ignis and Noctis a little further down the street, their eyes fixed on the colorful sky above. Noctis looks relaxed for once, an expression of childlike wonder on his face that Gladio hasn’t seen in years. It makes him smile. With a gentle touch to his arm he tries to get Prompto’s attention, nodding over to the other two.      “That could make for a nice picture,” he suggests.
