CHORUS: And the grace of the gods (I’m pretty sure) is a grace that comes by violence.
Aeschylus, Agamemnon (tr. Anne Carson)
shifting-cassius:
“I have no intention of getting in the habit of holding council when you request it Vance. So make this quick and don’t expect it to happen again. If this is really just a chat save yourself the effort and the kidney.”
“It’s insanely easy to get into your office. So even if you didn’t agree to it, I simply would have broken in later, sat at your desk with my feet up, and just rummaged through personal files until you decided to show your face. But I’ll make it quick. Wouldn’t want you to shapeshift into a time clock or something.” He sits himself in the chair, a huge grin on his features. “As you see. I’ve been reclaimed. And since I know you’re not a fan of it, this is me telling you to grow the fuck up because there are other people out there willing to cause Elijah harm. And guess what? It isn’t me.”
Cassius' eyes narrowed at the sight of the other's grin.
"I don't think you understand how shapeshifting works Vance. With how many of my kin your family enslaved you'd think you'd know by now. No - I can't turn into a time clock. But I can turn into one of these -"
They shift fluidly into a warlock and with equal ease they lobbed a fireball at the human, not really caring if it hit its mark or not. The mark being - of course - Jason's head. If it made contact, well maybe he'd be faster next time. But Cassius is certain it's well within the reflexes of the human to dodge. In that case the fireball will disperse before it touches anything else.
Unfazed, the shifter continued.
"And I can turn into much, much worse if you don't clarify your statement."
Cassius was pure dead serious about this part.
"Who else has it out for Elijah? I am hard pressed to believe there is something worse out there than what your lot did to him."
@shifting-cassius
As much as I dislike you, I figured we needed to chat.
“I have no intention of getting in the habit of holding council when you request it Vance. So make this quick and don’t expect it to happen again. If this is really just a chat save yourself the effort and the kidney.”
uh. we want details about this claim
“I’m sure you do, but that’s not how I operate. You’ll find out when you find out. The few I’m closer to will be hearing about it soon enough. Words bound to get around after that.”
Are you in love with Cassius?
“No I am not in love with him.”
“But he is the person i am most loyal to.”
anyone you'd like to claim?
“Yes.”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.”
No one in the Original family needs you to protect them. Get your own life.
“Thank you for writing in Dante. This seems to be the only family bonding time we get.”
Who is your fave shifter
“Oh, I don’t play favorites.”
Myself. Obviously.
“Every shifter means so much to me.”
↖ is now accepting curious anons.
originalxelijah:
Elijah sat at his desk, filling out some forms. He could feel Cassius’ stare and he knew why he was there. Nero had told him that Elijah reclaimed the hunter. The wolf knew better than anyone else what the Vance’s were capable of. Jason wasn’t like that and Elijah would defend him to that point. “Not that it’s any of your business, but it doesn’t matter. I have no intention of rationalizing anything to anyone. I am 10,000 years old. I can whatever I please and no one will stand in the way of my happiness. Not anymore.”
Cassius wished he could handle this the way he handled all else - with brute force. Stab them till they listen! Such tactics were not an option with family. Instead, all that the shapeshifter managed to do was grind his jaw at the flippancy of Elijah’s words. Surely he must understand!
“Yes, you’re 10,000 years old so don’t act like a goddamn child. Take responsibility for your actions and be able to defend them. I’ve tolerated your infatuation with that Vance filth for the sake of your happiness Elijah, but I cannot ignore the danger you will be putting the rest of the family in by claiming him. At your side, Jason will have access to far more resources and weapons than he’s down in the cells. You know what he’s capable of, he was bred to hunt us. You’d really put the rest of us - Dante, Annabelle, Blaise - in danger for the sake of what?”
No, the word love wasn’t really part of Cassius’ vocabulary. Even if was, he wouldn’t use it here. He refused to believe his brother had anything more than a sort of Stockholm Syndrome with the man.
“Some misguided sense of affection for the human? He’s human. A hunter. Once a hunter always a hunter. So excuse me for asking what the fuck are you thinking little brother?”

“I thought I’d feel guilty for being a murderer, but… I don’t. I feel wonder.”
huntingsupernaturals:
It took them most of the fucking day to tell him who had won him in auction. And he was surprised it wasn’t Elijah. Knowing it was Cassius, though? That managed to do nothing but piss the hunter off. He understand Cassius’ vendetta against him, but he figured it was time to give it a rest, if anything. The guards seemed pretty happy about it, though. Instead of there being just one, there was two of them. Probably because they knew Jason wasn’t going to be happy about the outcome. “You really think two of you are going to keep me from lashing out?” They had no chains with them this time and Jason had half a mind to reach through the cell door and grab one by the front of the shirt and slam his face directly into the metal bars.
When the door opened, Jason stayed where he was, blue eyes watching their every move. When one grabbed for him, Jason side stepped them and sent his fist flying directly at the guards face. The first hit connected, but the second one didn’t because the other guard finally got involved. By the time they got him under control, Jason was suffering from a busted lip and an extremely painful jaw. “Assholes.” He grumbled under his breath, walking with the guards at that point.
When he was escorted to Cassius’ office, Jason stepped in, ignoring the door slamming behind him. The lion sitting there, though. That caught him off guard. “For fucks sake. You going to eat me, then?”
The lion smelt blood when the boy entered.. Their ears flicked back and teeth bared at the sight of the split lip. That was new. The guards had enough sense to leave them alone as soon as they’d left the man in his care and Cassius watched the other with the eyes of a predator before prowling forward on all fours.
Eat him? Yes. Cassius would rather like to take the razor talon of claws and slice open Jason’s neck; perhaps crack open his chest with the large canine teeth he possessed in this form. But there were several things holding him back, other than the obvious Cassius also felt that that would be too swift of a death for the hunter. They circled them once, releasing a low growl before shifting.
The shapeshifter stood in front of the hunter now. Examining fingers roughly thumbed the split lip; touching the fresh wound, not minding if it stings. He’s certain Jason has felt worse. “This wasn’t here before.” Cassius observed before none to gently pushing the man away from him. The Original turned away and stalked through his office back towards his desk. “Explain.” He said as he neatly rolled up the sleeves of his dress shirt. In Cassius’ mind he’d done everything that needed to be done - he’d won. Jason was his for the next 72 hours and if Cassius accidentally left him with lasting ailments that would bring about an early grave.... well.... That was just how the world turned.
shifting-cassius:
For Jason to think that any of this would be done on his terms was ridiculous and Cassius wouldn’t entertain the notion for second. His banter was ignored for the most part. Cassius shifted to demon once more.
“Don’t you worry. I have a few more tricks.“
He used his telekinesis to take a fork from the table and hurl it toward the man. The fork pierced Jason’s kidney like a dart, no doubt causing excruciating pain. He was aware though that Jason was accustomed to such treatment - but Cassius has mainly done so because of the ticking clock. He was standing now - more than an arms length away from the man. He leaned against the the table. He’d glued the child to their seat once more. Honestly, you give them an inch, they walk all over you.
"Like this one. It’s called “Listen the fuck up, you’ve got approximately 30 minutes - maybe a little less - before you need to see a warlock or you die.” The name could use a little work but I think it gets its point across just fine. I don’t plan on letting you go until my ends of the conversation are met so it might be in your best interest to help speed this along. Are we fucking clear?“
He kept the fork embedded in the boy. The shapeshifter did not trust Jason one bit. Cassius still remembered the slaughter of the Vances vividly. He’d absolutely gutted and gored them, left them depicted and strung their innards from the rafters for what they’d done to Elijah. Cassius would have gladly had Jason join them had it not been for the firmest of requests from Elijah. Elijah. It seemed that 10,000 years was not long enough to drive the emotion out of the youngest. No matter, it would come. And until that happened Cassius would be his brother’s guiding light.
"Im disappointed to see you haven’t been killed during the time I was away. Know whatever faith my brother has in you is misplaced. He may seek to make you his but know that I don’t trust you for a second."
Cassius had no issue shifting to read Jason’s mind and the glimpses he’d caught there were only corroborating. But impulses were nothing till they became action and Cassius knew that Elijah would need something more concrete. How fucking foolish love made you.
"This isn’t a ”if you dare hurt Elijah“ conversation because I am almost completely certain you wouldn’t - I don’t even have to read your mind for that. I am here to say that should any of my other siblings or myself fall into any sort of peril because of - you so much as trip and fall into them - I will cleave your head in with a brick. I will start killing slaves - innocent ones - and throwing bodies out the door."
His voice stayed level through this all - incredibly monotone. Cassius checked his watch. "And this is your official countdown. You’ve got a little over 20 minutes.”
If there’s one thing he’d never understand, it was this shapeshifter’s abilities. He was well versed in normal shapeshifter activities and powers – but the Original, he’s never seen someone like him before in his life. His ability to shift into forms was one thing, but gathering their powers was something entirely different. Not only could he take on their form, but he gained their abilities too. Seeing him transform again, it was interesting, but it wasn’t until he felt that pressure against his body again that he realized he had taken the form of some sort of demon. The one thing Jason had no clue about unless he went by what the Bible and those so-called demonologists said. Holy water was a weakness. So was salt. But when it came to killing them, he was just as oblivious as the rest of the world.
“Can’t wait.” He challenged.
His eyes followed the fork as it flew through the air. He expected it to hit the wall or something, but it never made it that far. The direction seemed to change, going downward right at the last minute. The moment it pierced his skin was the moment Jason made a noise. There was pain he couldn’t even explain radiating through his body at that point. He may have been trained to endure torture, but that didn’t mean he was immune to it. Not to mention, he’s never had something lodged in his kidney before. The hunter’s jaw was set, his eyes somewhat wide as he tried to control the pain he felt. If he showed one ounce of emotion in this situation, it could come back to bite him in the ass. He tried his hardest to raise his hands, but with the telekinesis keeping him seated, he wasn’t able to do much. Perhaps that was a good thing because if Jason has just one ounce of control over the situation, that damn fork would have been removed from his body and slammed right into the shapeshifters neck.
"I think you may need to come up with a better name.” Sarcasm was a defense. One he was very good at putting up when he needed to. He’s pretty sure he could be near death and he’d still be as sarcastic as ever. It was the one thing he could hold onto in any situation, and given the one he was in, he needed anything he could get his hands on. He could feel his heart pounding a mile a minute in his ears, adrenaline at it’s peak. He knew once it wore off, all that pain was going to come rushing back. And he had thirty minutes of this bullshit to endure. “Sorry to disappoint.” He muttered through clench teeth, his hands flat on the table. “Perhaps the next time you disappear for a large amount of time, my death will be concrete.” Death was just another adventure at this point. One that had to be better than what life had given him.
“See, you were pretty scary until you mentioned killing innocent slaves. What the hell are they to me, Cassius?” They weren’t his family. They weren’t his friends. “And you’ve missed a few things while you’ve been gone. Allow me to catch you up.” His fingers were scraping along the table top at this point. Jason was trying his hardest to separate his mind from his body at this point, but it just wasn’t working. His pain tolerance was high, but even this was getting to him.
“Dante’s had a tree branch through the shoulder and Annabelle’s had her arm broken. And would you look at that. There’s been no brick anywhere near my head.” Twenty minutes. He could do this.
