[Potential Spoiler Commentary] We definitely agree that as “evil” characters go, Shigure isn’t one. All of the main characters, while they don’t always have the best actions, are understandable and relatable in some way. However, Shigure has never hidden the fact that he is willing to use and hurt anyone who stands in the way of his goals. That doesn’t mean he has no feelings toward these people or cares nothing for them, but Shigure will think of Shigure first. 

His feelings for Akito are, in our opinion, obsessive and unhealthy. He admits to wanting to control her and crush her, not set her completely free. Rin’s self-destruction for Haru’s sake is unhealthy in a different way, because she is willing to sacrifice her life for Haru since she believes she is worthless. On the other hand, Shigure is willing to sacrifice others for Akito’s freedom, the end of the curse, and his goals. This isn’t to say that all of his intentions are bad or that the end result wouldn’t be good, but an interesting part of his character is how far he is willing to go for what he wants. Even things like letting the kids stay with him (especially Tohru) can lead back to Shigure planning on causing tension in the family to further his own interests and weaken the curse. Shigure isn’t above doing nice things for people, but if it doesn’t benefit him in some way, he is less likely to do it.

We don’t think Shigure is widely hated for everything he does, but he has made it clear that he is not above using and hurting those he can just to get himself closer to his goals. People can like Shigure and sympathize with him. His coping mechanisms and instincts are not always pure, but that doesn’t mean he’s a terrible monster with no feelings. However, he does admit to being selfish, manipulative, and sneaky.

These are just our opinions, and we don’t expect everyone to agree! We all have different feelings towards characters. People will love characters others dislike, and so on… Such is the life of fandoms. :)
