How To Write A Chase Scene
Before anyone takes off running, the reader needs to know why this matters. The chase can’t just be about two people running, it’s gotta have a reason. Is your hero sprinting for their life because the villain has a knife? Or maybe they’re chasing someone who just stole something valuable, and if they don’t catch them, it’s game over for everyone. Whatever the reason, make it clear early on. The higher the stakes, the more the reader will care about how this chase plays out. They’ll feel that surge of panic, knowing what’s on the line.
Sure, a chase scene is fast, people are running, dodging, maybe even falling. But not every second needs to be at full speed. If it’s too frantic from start to finish, the reader might get numb to the action. Instead, throw in some rhythm. Use quick, sharp sentences when things get intense, like someone stumbling or almost getting caught. But then slow it down for a second. Maybe they hit a dead end or pause to look around. Those brief moments of slow-down add suspense because they feel like the calm before the storm kicks up again.
Don’t let the setting just be a backdrop. The world around them should become a part of the chase. Maybe they’re tearing through a marketplace, dodging carts and knocking over tables, or sprinting down alleyways with trash cans crashing behind them. If they’re running through the woods, you’ve got low-hanging branches, roots, slippery mud, and the constant threat of tripping. Describing the environment makes the scene more vivid, but it also adds layers of tension. It’s not just two people running in a straight line, it’s two people trying to navigate through chaos.
Running isn’t easy, especially when you’re running for your life. This isn’t some smooth, graceful sprint where they look cool the whole time. Your character’s lungs should be burning, their legs aching, maybe their side starts to cramp. They’re gasping for air, barely holding it together. These details will remind the reader that this chase is taking a real toll. And the harder it gets for your character to keep going, the more the tension ramps up because the reader will wonder if they’ll actually make it.
Don’t make it too easy. The villain should almost catch your hero or the hero should almost grab the villain. But something happens last second to change the outcome. Maybe the villain’s fingers brush the hero’s coat as they sprint around a corner, but they manage to slip out of reach just in time. Or maybe your hero almost gets close enough to tackle the villain, but slips on some gravel, losing precious seconds.
And Don’t let the chase end in a way that feels too predictable. Whether your character gets away or is caught, it should be because of something clever. Maybe they spot a hiding place that’s almost impossible to notice, or they use their surroundings to mislead their pursuer. Or, the person chasing them pulls a fast one, Laying a trap, cutting off their escape route, or sending the hero down the wrong path. You want the end to feel earned, like it took quick thinking and ingenuity, not just dumb luck or fate.

NaruHina gang, poll!
I haven't written NH in a while and am thinking of ideas. Vote on which one you think I should write! 😊
What do you think I should write?
After the war, some hyper fangirl follows Naruto around for Hinata's autograph
Hinata wants to live a quiet life but somehow ends up a Konoha power broker
Naruto and Hinata play Cupid for Konohamaru and Hanabi
Something else, mention in the tags!
I voted for the first, but somehow wanna still see the second one hahaha
Update
I've been slowly writing every day, working on the second chapter of my latest story. I manage at least a sentence before the mental fog sets in, but I call that progress!
It's not gonna be as long as chapter one, that was an unhinged number of words, but I'm taking my time with it.
Writing is hard.
The Weight of Fate
It was a quiet night, as most nights were on this part of town, at this particular hour. Not that it got any louder during the day, not since the plague had forced most people to flee their homes, if they hadn't been unlucky enough to waste away inside of them.
Now, three years later, it remained almost completely empty, as per protocol. It was a bad omen to wander onto these streets and, after all, people didn't enjoy those. Rumors about ghosts wailing in the dark emptiness circulated, keeping most people away; even the bravest, toughest men didn't feel the need to disturb the souls from beyond the grave after the sun set. Naruto judged himself amongst them, in both bravery and respect for the departed, even if he was yet to be recognized as one. That one night, however, he'd found himself wandering into the deserted streets, without any apparent aim, his head filled with pilling thoughts; he didn't feel like returning home that night, not even to change out of his dirty work clothes. The young man knew he'd eventually have to face reality but, that night his feet kept taking him in further and further away.
"We could move into one of these houses..." He uttered, lost in thought, rubbing his still stubble-less chin.
The former decree barred anyone from living in the buildings for at least four years, but with the current protocol the zone had been declared safe for some time now. Yet, the governor had still not formally ceased the restrictions and, due to the rumors, people hadn't pushed for it either. He was reasonably wary of spirits but, as of now, he hadn't heard any, not a soul, living or dead., after all ghosts only existed in old stories told by old women to get kids to obey.
He scoffed at the idea, kicking his tattered, brown shoe into the dirt. His situation didn't seem like it could get any worse.
"Hey!"
Naruto felt a chill go up his spine, his blonde hairs standing on end as he heard a soft, ethereal voice call out from somewhere. He froze in place. Turning his head in every direction, he tried to find a human to connect that whisper to. It had been soft enough that the wind could have been the culprit, which made him doubt his own sanity for a second.
"Hey!"
Though still a whisper, this time he felt anxiety within the call. His feet shifted under him as his body prepared itself to flee. His mind rushed through all the apologies and prayers he knew, his legs starting to tremble.
"Sir, please, up here!"
The terrified teenager stopped in his tracks, his brain processing the words, beginning to understand this might not be a specter at all. His blue eyes scanned the darkness slowly, tracing every building until he finally saw it. A few meters in front of him, in what he measured to be the third floor of a dilapidated, white brick house, a thin, pale arm stuck out of a hole in the wall .
He approached one step at a time, trying to hide his presence, at least until he could identify what was going on. The buildings in that area were almost as old as the country itself, and had suffered repairs and modifications over the years, as well as some structural additions, one of the most useful ones being external staircases. A rusty, iron ladder connected to a narrow platform that leveled with the first floor, supported by four sturdy metal beams, hung close to the ground. It took some effort to pull it down without making a sound and even more to climb, his worn soles slipping every three steps, and the long ragged sleeve of his once white linen shirt snagging on loosened nails. The second set of stairs was easier, as the proper staircase was supported by columns and stuck still between the first and second platform. His heart was beating into his ear as he ascended, adrenaline pumping his body forwards, with all his five senses on edge until he reached the third floor.
He kneeled down in front of the moldy, crumbling wall, where the hole he'd seen was. He estimated it big enough for his leg to pass, but not enough for his head to peak through. The arm was no longer sticking out of it. Instead, he was met with a face of white: deadly pale skin stained with dust, eyes the color of snow looking dead into his blue ones, and greasy dark hair messy and tangled; his heart skipped a beat, a shiver going down his spine, his body ready to retreat, but he stopped himself. Something about this apparition felt tangible. She looked like a very young woman, maybe around his age, but something about her still felt off.
"Who are you?" He whispered, holding his heart in his palm.
"Please, I need help." The girl was holding herself from crying as much as she could. "They're coming back any second, please...
"Who are? What's happening? Are you trapped in there?"
"... Yes."
Naruto ruffled his over-grown hair, stressed and in disbelief that he would find himself in this uncanny situation, especially after the day he'd had.
"I'll get you out, just give me a second and I'll..."
"No!" She blurted as hushed as she could.

Getting a bit sick of all the "ooh I'm so glad Laios has a soft body!" "Laios is built like an average guy" style posts. Because he doesn't and isn't.
Laios is built like a fucking professional wrestler. He isn't like, super chiseled or anything but he does not have an "average" body, he his built like someone who does a LOT of physical effort and training.
Edit Note: I'm really amazed by how much love this post got. Guess it just shows we're all in the same boat. Never give up writing! ❤️
Edit Note 2: I can't believe this has reached 3000 notes. Been on tumblr for almost ten years (different account) and nothing like this has ever happened before. Thank you! 😊

What I could see from your eyes (Chapter 1)
I decided to finally just do it, so here it is, my first fic 😱
Please do give it some love :)
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.
I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.
The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.
Legit, getting a subscription on a fic I'd abandoned 10 years earlier spurred me into action to finish it (and write a sequel!)
#The journey of reading a fic while it's updating is part of the fun!
Yes exactly this! I love subscribing to fics forgetting about them a bit and then being pleasantly surprised when they update again and they show up in my inbox. It makes me feel like I'm a Charles Dickens fan living in 1830s London waiting patiently for his new chapter to be released via the daily paper.
True.
Lack of engagement can be a huge deterrent for updating a story or wanting to finish it at all. You just assume nobody said anything about your work because nobody liked what you wrote. What else can a writer assume about the silence? 😩
Didn't know that WIP were being actively avoided like this. That's a real shame. So many WIP's are absolutely amazing, and by not even giving them a chance, it really can contribute to those WIP remaining WIP indefinitely.
Don't be afraid of unfinished fics, writers can come back after years of silence! And don't be afraid to engage with the author, I promise the majority will appreciate the feedback!
I often read "Unfinished" fics, but only if they've been updated in the last 6 months, cause my heart can't take it if they're never finished
