Shikimate - 4 Stages

The track has been heavily influenced by three main artists within the electronic genre, the first and foremost influence being Phealeh who creates tranquil, minimalistic music through various keyboard synths. These main aspects of his producing techniques are the key influences participated within the track’s music. In reference to the techniques used in ‘4 Stages’, I decided to give the piano different filters such as arpeggios to create a similar sound to Phealeh. Furthermore, the second influence being Baths who create sounds through recording the most natural aspects of the earth, for example, their song ‘Ocean Death’ where the track begins with the sound of waves crashing against the tide and rocks. In reference to the techniques I used in respect to the recording aspect, there are a number of organic sounds used; an iron steaming, a tap dripping, the shower running, etc. however I added various EQs so they are hardly recognisable yet extremely effective, creating an overall dynamic sound.  Lastly, on the heavier side of electronic music - DJ Hazard has been influential upon ‘4 Stages’ through his use of vocal sampling, for example in his track ‘Time Tripping’. Therefore, having sampled vocals in my track created a trance-like atmosphere which developed the experimental, electronic feel that complimented the instruments.

Biography

Isabelle Astley is not your typical University student from Leeds as she spreads the powerful message of spiritual connections and current matters within social-politics through her music and Shikimate. She produces minimalistic, electronic tracks via Ableton and incorporates organic sounds much alike artists such as Baths and Phaeleh. 

Isabelle is 21 years old and comes from a classically trained background having achieved her Distinction certificate in Grade 8 (ABRSM) Singing when she was 18 years old. In addition, she has recorded amongst the world-renowned percussionist Ged Lynch. Furthermore, on the Musical Theatre side, she has performed the lead two years on the run for Craven College in Skipton.

Today, Isabelle hopes to get herself known musically through Shikimate and plans to carry on making progress via Shikimate, however expanding her skills into other music projects for the future.

Shikimate’s Interactive Project

Our new Interactive Project (SIP) is a campaign in aid to discover the crucial feedback through social media we feel will be an enormous help in completing our tracks successfully..and we would like it from you!! We are going to regularly post specific organic sounds and tranquil videos in order to review what our targeted audience prefers. Thus giving our band an advantage on what the majority of the public like, and more ultimately, giving you the chance to have a huge impact on our overall production process.

We are going to record simple day-to-day tasks like running the shower, pouring a drink, turning a light switch on and off etc. These tasks create a (surprisingly) pleasant, minimal atmosphere when incorporated into music, which in our live performances will be complimented by tranquil videos, for example waves crashing against a cliff, a blossom tree being blown by the wind etc...

So please don’t be shy and tell us what you think!

We will present these audio and video clips to you that we have recorded via Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram, so keep your eyes pealed as we will be asking you which ones you have decided you like the most - all comments welcome and appreciated.

Hans Zimmer has produced many soundtracks for many movies, however this one being most influential upon our music as he classically produces this piece therefore creating an emotional connection. As we are delving into the experimental aspect of music and hoping to involve an atmosphere into our own performances through showing various clips of waves crashing up the side of a cliff, blood cells shooting through your veins, DMT entering the brain..etc.

CocoRosie reflect upon a couple of aspects that have evidentially influenced our production. Simply their perfect microphone techniques that compliment their trio of singing genres, those being Soprano Operatic vocals mixed with beat-boxing and Icelandic-sounding singing, which all work incredibly together. 

CocoRosie have been particularly influential on our producing as we both originally come from Classical backgrounds, therefore no better way than to experiment with Operatic vocals and minimalistic beats.

Salyu x salyu experiments just with her vocal chords by creating different sounding patterns through solely singing vowels. In respect to our own work we have entwined her ideas of creating the melody through simple vocal sounds as we trust that it will make a perfect concoction with minimal, organic sounds.

In contrast to our first influential post, Baths experiment with organic sounds, which creates clean music with pure sounds. Thus giving our project inspiration to record natural sounds, for example water dripping out of the tap, steam coming out of the kettle..etc.

Phaeleh produce a track with tranquil minimal sounds accompanied by Soundmouse’s hypnotic soft voice. Particularly the piano melody along with the almost trap like beat throughout, is something that has become influential when producing our own creations.
