If the ‘monsters’ weren’t real and just average people, this obstacle course would seem more like a Halloween maze.” Pierce shook his head at Shiloh. “How about you though? You gonna try out the course after it’s done?”

“No, that is true, we live boring, small-town lives. But what’s wrong with a Halloween-themed maze year-round? People love it! People still watch The Nightmare Before Christmas all the time,” he laughed. He had no interest in the movie, but knew many who did. To each their own “Nah man, I don’t have the stamina for it. I’m a hybrid. Maybe if I die and come back as a lich though.” He laughed and was vaguely aware that his humor was disgustingly morbid, but paid it no mind. “I am loving this tour, though. It’s something exciting that Letheans are going to love. There’s a lot of health junkies hiding in our midst, and our gym is just not suitable for supernaturals. This place is rocking it though. You really know your stuff. Did you go to school for it, or do you just have a knack for it?”

She sighed at his request to maintain doctor-patient confidentiality mostly because she’d come to look for him as a friend, not as the person tending to his ailments. Eventually she just gave him a nod. She frowned slightly as Shiloh explained the situation to her. Maybe if she or I could have something to help us sleep, he said and that made her jaw tense a little.  “What are you asking me, Shiloh?” the lamia asked in a serious way.

He hadn’t really been asking her anything. Sure, it was implied that he wanted medication to knock them out, but he wasn’t going to outright say that was he? He was smarter than that. He shrugged then looked away. “I just needed someone to confide in. I feel helpless. I can’t help her, or myself, like everything is out of my control and... it hurts enough when its just me. But to have Deya suffer as well? Thanks to that fire... she’s been through trauma but this one really wracked her. It’s not my place to go telling people her problems, but I’m worried for her, Eleonor.”

Deya nodded slowly, pulling away from him and wiping at her filthy face. “Yeah.” Part of her brain wanted to tell her that some of this ash might even be some of Clark and that thought made her want to cry even harder, to just give up all together. She followed him to the bathroom and paused as he went to the doorway, unable to believe how weak she was being. It made her want to cry again. Why was everything making her cry tonight? She hated it, felt weak and pathetic.

“Shiloh?” she whispered quietly, voice shaking a little. “Will you stay? Just.. Just sit on the toilet and talk to me or… I’m not asking you to stare, I can go behind the curtain and- I just- I don’t want- I don’t-” The truth was that it kept replaying in her head, the smoke, the flames, the screams, the smell. It felt like it was never going to stop.

“I wouldn’t dream of looking at you,” he deadpanned, but broke and smiled anyway. He needed to see her smile, if only he could. But he had never been good at consoling people. Everyone always consoled him, Deya included. He stepped forward and put his arms around her, putting a hand on the back of her head. It was dirty and smelled of ash, but he held his stance. “I’m not going anywhere, okay?” he asked rhetorically. “If you need help, give me a shout.” He stayed at the door, and turned his back to her so she could disrobe. “Do you want to talk about it or should I find my rubber ducky to distract you? I think its under the sink.” He sighed, wanting to look but not wanting to accidentally peek at Deya. “When’s the last time we had a sleepover, Deya? Was it ‘94?”

Mortality made people creative. “If I go with the obstacle course, I’ll need to figure out a way to change the parts without tearing it all down. I want to keep it fresh. We’ve got people who have seen everything and people who think they have.” Of course, considering the fact that there weren’t any humans here, he knew that he’d have to go big. “Can’t see people going to use it during autumn or winter. I mean you’re already coughing up a lung.”

Shiloh couldn’t help but grin. “Nonsense, with their blood pumping they’ll be fine! Besides, put up some people to remind them to get back on track, a werewolf or vampire here and there to ‘scare’ them into doing their duties. With the fangs and the snarls, they’ll want to get the hell out and will do anything to get to the finish line,” he joked.

A simple nod was all that was required to let her friend know that yes, his appointment was today. “Really?” she asked, unafraid to sound a little skeptical. It was good news a patient of her was feeling well, of course, but judging by the blunt in Shiloh’s hand she could easily guess why that was. “Well, if you don’t mind, could you walk me through what different habits or changes in routing have aided to make you feel better?”. When he mentioned he could put out his blunt the lamia gave a nod in response. “I don’t have my things, no. But we should reschedule your appointment, Shiloh. I’ll make room for you tomorrow”.

“What are you, my psychiatrist now, too? I don’t know. Eating well, perhaps? More often.” He hadn’t put any weight on, but looked down at his bony self just to make sure that was the case. “Okay,” he stated simply, reaching into his pocket for his phone with the blunt between his lips. After a final inhale he put it out to the opposite side that Ele was sitting next to him. “If you’re my psychiatrist now, can I say something? But you can’t tell anyone else, not Odette or Orion or Fiona or anyone. Confidentiality. Even as a general practitioner you have that rule.” He grinned lopsidedly to let her know it wasn’t a big deal, but he still wanted his privacy. “Deya has been over a lot since the fire, and... not sleeping well. That’s all. Maybe if she or I could have something to help us sleep, one of us will sleep through the night and... I dunno... but I don’t want her to know I’ve been spewing this about, you know? She trusts me.”

There was something about letting herself fall into Shiloh’s arms that made her want to break, made her come so close to crying that it was jarring. She nodded slowly, swallowing thickly as she reached to brush her forehead for no real reason at all. “Okay,” she said in a hoarse voice instead, still trying so hard not to crack. “Can, um… Can I borrow a sweater?”

She wasn’t cold. The truth was that she could still feel the heat of the flames on her, but she wanted the comfort of the fabric, wanted to be able to smell his familiar scent. But instead she could still smell the smoke, even the scent of burning flesh wafting from the building (though that might mostly be in her mind, she wasn’t even sure at this point). “I’m s-sorry. I probably shouldn’t have c-” She closed her eyes and when she opened them the tears were welling much more stubbornly than before. “I just needed yo-” Her voice cracked off as the tears finally started rolling fiercely down her cheeks, her hands coming up to cover her face in a sad attempt to hide it. She didn’t do this. She didn’t cry, much less in front of anyone else. And she didn’t have a right to cry. He wasn’t her partner, wasn’t her father, just a friend that she couldn’t save. She could feel the tears leaving lines down the soot still on her face (she knew she hadn’t cleaned it well enough, hadn’t bothered to), proof and evidence of her inability to stay strong.

He was surprised to see this side of her, if he were being completely honest. Hadn’t Lethe lost people before? They’d had fires before, there was that night last year that everyone went out of control. And yet this was her turning point, Clark Segen’s death among others’ injuries. He held her tight for a few moments before finally letting her go, stepping back from the smell of ash and dust and flames that stuck to her. “No offense, Deya, but... can we clean you up a bit? And then I’ll be more than happy to lend you some clothes.”

He didn’t like when people said ‘underneath all that x, is a pretty woman/handsome man. X of course being hair, dirt, fat, you name it. He hated things like that, so he decided not to say this aloud. Because it wasn’t about wanting her to be beautiful, she could do that any day of the week. It was about her being clean and comfortable. Who wanted to sleep in actually visible particles of dirt? He couldn’t let her go to sleep like that, not just because it was his house but because of her own health to be concerned over. He led Deya to the bathroom and got a towel for her. About to leave, he stared for a moment, making sure she had everything she needed.

Taking on the name and identity of Pierceson Davis was a relatively new development, but with all the work he put in, he was as real as the poor man he took it from. As he walked up and down the field, he decided not to think more about the original; he didn’t want to think poorly of the dead man he was thankful toward.  If he had a misfortune of facing them as a lich or a Riverborn, he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. All he knew was that none of his options were going to be pretty.

He’d cross that bridge later. At the moment, he was more interested in the open fields in front of him. With what he was trying to offer, he had a few ideas for the space, but he didn’t want to talk to a wall. “This spot’s good for plenty of things, but I can’t pick what to go with. I could put another combat zone or another range… Maybe an obstacle coarse or an all-purpose outdoor training area, but I don’t know. I don’t know if people here get jazzed for new ways of fitness.” He paused and glanced at the other person. “Do people just use magic lotion instead? You know, around here. Don’t tell me that putting in the work isn’t a thing here.” He smirked.

As a native (and lover) of Lethe, Shiloh was rather interested in this new business of Pierceson’s. He’d come in and asked for a tour this afternoon, and since he knew a lot of people here and there he offered some advices of what to put, utilize, change, etc. “What kind of lotion would that be?” he asked surprisingly easily. “I like the obstacle course idea, its very... militaristic. Gives me deja vu almost, a good memory here and there. Like a playground but for supernatural-adults. It’ll be great no matter what you do, though.” Shiloh coughed into his right arm, the arm opposite of where Pierceson was standing. He wasn’t contagious, just a hybrid.

She was covered in soot and dirt, though she had since washed off her hands and face, but there was something about tonight she couldn’t shake. She’s seen death before. It was ugly and it was cruel, but it wasn’t numbing anymore. Tonight was different.

Clark was a pillar of the town, a face that was comforting to see. He was the kind of person who wasn’t easy to come by, the kind who was just special. And he was dead, gone in one of the worst ways to die, and she had had to see his family and how could you recover from that?

She wanted to go home to Sam, but that felt too indulgent, too childlike. She was an adult and things were different with them, no matter how hard they pretended. It was different. They were different, and they seemed refuse to talk about it. So without even realizing where she was going, she had ended up here.

Deya lifted her shaking hand to knock on the door, her face blank in the way that betrayed her pain, made it obvious, and she hated it. She couldn’t cry. She didn’t have a right to cry. Clark had been her friend but not family, and she was supposed to be different, supposed to be strong and independent and unfazed. She wasn’t supposed to be the girl who cried, yet she could feel it welling.

As soon as the door opened, she looked up at the familiar face, the features and lines that she knew by heart, and felt tears well in her eyes and her voice crack on a broken, “Hi.”

It was midnight, but of course he was still awake. Watching the news, wishing he had a dog to pet, anything. He wasn’t expecting a knock on the door, and if anything it should’ve been Adam. But no. When he opened it, it was Deya. She was covered in soot and her hair was dirty. God. 

Shiloh opened his arms immediately, before opening his mouth. He wrapped his arms around the woman, uncaring if he got dirt on himself. “Come in,” he said calmly. “God Deya. Do you need to crash here? I... I can find some clean clothes for you to wear. You can take a shower and I’ll sleep on the couch. Or we can watch movies all night. Oh my God Deya I’m so sorry.” He wanted to hug her a second time but she seemed so numb and broken at the same time. He knew why she was so stoic, what had hurt her so much. He knew about Clark’s death, and sure he liked the guy but he fixed his garbage disposal a few times and taught him about cleaning his gutters. That was about it.

His deflection makes her blink. Well, darn. There goes her normal strategy. She’s about to stammer an apology when he goes on, jokingly enough. The question does get a laugh from her, even if her brows still knit with worry. She hands over the joint if only to buy herself some time to answer. Good to know that she looks normal, even if she feels far from it. “Well, I guess I’m… normal, then, huh?” Not even close. How often does your long lost father suddenly reappear in your life? “Keeping busy with work, mostly. Work and family.” That’s one way to put it. The urge to ask him about his goings-on is a strong one, but she just smiles at her friend. “Fall’s finally coming around, at least. Seems to be cooling down around here.” The weather? Now, that’s desperate. But it’s something that isn’t her.

“You mean Cora? Faolan? Gabriel?” It wasn’t a secret, the Meadowes-Maddox-Laughlin family tree. “Yeah, uh, except its easier for me to be in the heat than the cold. Lethe is my home, and it forever will be, but I might do better moving to a warmer climate. My dad has his business so he never wanted to leave. Adam was always here, until he wasn’t, and now that he’s back I don’t know where we stand. Welp, the cat’s outta the bag.”

Mack chuckled with a nod and something between a smile and a grimace. Not fitting had been her entire life, easily. That was a lot of why it was so comforting to meet another hybrid, to have someone to talk to. “I’m sorry to hear that, about your mom. And your dad, really. That sucks.” She laughed a little and nodded, taking a drink of her water easily. “Yeah, I guess so. If we’re not going to live long anyway, we might as well do the things we really want to.”

“That’s one thing we can’t share with other people,” he began, thrumming his fingers on the table. “Our family, our upbringings. We can work on how we look at them, how we feel about that happened. You can change the way you think about it, at least, if you can’t change your feelings. I dunno, I’m speaking gibberish now by the look on your face,” he smiled. It struck a chord with him what Mack said about doing what they want to do. He had spoken with Milo a few days past as he was completely stoned about a certain someone in his life, and her face flashed across his mind just now. ‘We might as well do the things we really want to’ also echoed in his mind. “I know you’re younger than me, but how do you just... go for it?” he asked, ever evasively and vaguely.

Milo grinned at him. Suddenly, he was pretty sure that he was watching the young man figure it out right in front of him. “Would you though? You know, that’s not always the case. It’s okay to have a thing for her you know. I think she likes you too, but I don’t know her that well.” It was funny, hearing himself say it wasn’t a big deal to make a commitment when he’d been running from it for the last twenty years. One could just ask Forest, actually. “Ha ha,” he told him with a roll of his eyes. “I told you that privately, you weren’t supposed to use it against me you turd. But yeah, we did. And I couldn’t commit and fucked it up. Which is… For the best, really. I think we were kind of meant to be friends and that couldn’t have happened if… Anyway, my point is. Don’t wait too long kid. People always regret the things they didn’t do more than the things they did.”

“Shut up man, you don’t know her. She’s like that with everyone, okay?” He literally waved it off, not wanting to admit he had feelings for a nymph that could live hundreds of years. She aged slowly, and he would die within the decade. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Shiloh couldn’t help but smirk at Milo’s ramblings. It was cute, him figuring out for himself that things worked out in the end. If only that was life for a hybrid, which it definitely was not. “It’s already too late, man,” he sighed, then stood up. “If it’s any consolation, I’ve come to terms with it, okay? I’m good. ‘Comfortable in my discomfort,’ as they say. Now I gotta head home but I’ll text you when my head is clearer.” He waved at Milo and left him smoking alone in the dark.

Fresh air does a body good. Or a mind. Or something. That’s what she’s always been told, anyway. It’s advice she’s given, even, to a restless patient. Enough spiels given about vitamin D and you begin to believe in its powers yourself. This new fall breeze, though – that’s unexpected. Fiona has her hands shoved into her pockets and has begun to regret taking her lunch break outside when she sees Shiloh. She’s certain he doesn’t want her pity, but it rears its head anyway, sending her brows furrowing and her feet heading toward him before she can think twice about it. Worry helps keep her mind off of what – or who – it’s been occupied by lately anyway. Maybe it’s a greedy sort of concern. A welcome distraction, even as she frowns at her friend. “Hey, Shiloh,” the nurse comments softly, her arms wrapped around herself to guard from the cold as she sits beside him. “Hm, well–” Instinct tells her to raise concerns for his health, to give a gentle warning. But he’s weary enough as it is, she can feel that as their shoulders brush. “A record’s a record… and it’s relaxing, at least. Can I, um…” Fiona reaches for the blunt in his hand, but not to smoke it. No, she takes it gently and holds it beside herself. Merely a means of getting him to look at her. “I’m sorry to pry, but how are you feeling? You look…” Bad? Oh, no, that’s cruel. Sure, she knows his warning signs well enough, what with how often she’d tended to him in the emergency room. Still, Fiona shakes her head, more to stop herself than anything. “Tired. You look tired. How’ve you been sleeping?”

“Not much,” he replied frankly. “I don’t really want to talk about myself, though. Not today...” He looked away when realizing Fiona wasn’t handing the blunt back. He didn’t much care, he was high enough and feeling chiller than he was an hour ago when he first left work to take his mind off of an animal dying on his table. “You look normal. Mind expanding on it?” he turned back towards her, gesturing to her being. He smiled so she knew it was in jest, but it wasn’t rhetorical.

Milo snorted and shook his head lightly with amusement as he cocked a brow at the hybrid beside him. “Nice. I’m insulted,” he told him, without a hint of seriousness at all in his voice. “Yeah, well, you do have a scary friend that’s not me. The firefighter.” He wiggled his eyebrows before nudging the younger man with his shoulder lightly. “You know who I’m talking about. Deya Roshan,” he said, inhaling slowly on his cigarette before exhaling again. He chuckled again despite himself, ducking his head a little as the amusement rolled through him. “For the record, I did used to wear glasses before this triggered. But you two? That’s not a just-friends situation, kid. I feel like this is common knowledge to everyone but you.”

“Oh, Deya.... Deya?” He was surprised to hear it because... what was Milo even saying? Something interesting? Just friends? What? “Common knowledge my ass. If it were I’d know! And I honestly have no idea...” It dawned on him that maybe he did have feelings for his long-time friend, but he was surprised he didn’t feel icky at the realization. Icky because she’d known him, what, his entire life? She’d babysat him and wasn’t it weird, that age difference? Well if they were humans of course but she was a nymph and looked younger than he was! His limbs creaked and hers were wonderfully oiled, well-kept, strong... Oh shit. “Tell me again about how you and Forest used to bang?” he deflected.

Milo offered a small smile at the much younger man and sat beside him with a small huff. “God, kid, don’t get old,” he told him before casting a side glance at the hybrid. He knew well enough that Shiloh’s health wasn’t the best already, and he wasn’t the only one in town. All of the hybrids seemed a little sicker than most and it was something that Milo hadn’t even been sure was possible until recently. It made him glad, frankly, that he would never be in the position to have children. The odds of falling in love with another werewolf, of it being born one species or the other… the chances were too great. The kid would have enough trouble with him being its dad for Christ’s sake. Milo breathed in the night air and slowly pulled his carton of cigarettes from his pocket. “Got a light? Left mine at home.” Or Forest stole it, but he didn’t think that was something his friend would do. It wasn’t exactly like Milo was new to smoking. “That’s pretty good man. You’re leaving your old record in the dust.” He stuck the unlit cigarette between his lips and looked at the younger boy. “What’s up with that girl? The scary one. You two still determined you’re just friends or is it actually interesting?” he asked playfully.

“I dunno, Milo. I don’t have any scary friends,” he smiled, lighting the cigarette for his friend. “Unless of course you count. That grin? God you look like a serial killer,” he chuckled, pocketing the lighter once Milo’s cigarette was lit. “I also don’t have any more-than-just-friends, so you must definitely need to get your eyesight checked. I know werewolves have quote-unquote ‘good genetics,’ but you might want to invest in some glasses, man.”
