OLIVE OIL: the liquid gold that made ancient Greece prosperous…and helped secure its downfall

Olives have been a significant part of Greek history and culture for over 4,000 years and they were a particularly important symbol for the ancient Greeks. Legend has it that Zeus awarded the ancient city of Athens to either Poseidon or Athena depending on who offered the most precious gift. Poseidon struck a rock with his trident and salt water emerged; Athena struck the ground with her spear and up sprang an olive tree. The people of the city chose Athena’s gift and so the city was named after her. Olive oil symbolised wealth and victory – Homer describes it as ‘liquid gold’ and this particular nickname has stuck through the ages, reflecting its symbolic quality and the importance of olive oil to Greece’s international trade.
