Having just rewatched Avatar The Last Airbender I feel like you could kind of see the small threads of this in ‘The Beach’ episode. It’s always sad to learn of bigger plans for your favorite shows. It’s amazing that it still turned out pretty great though!

I think that’s supposed to be a ‘fundoshi’, which was the traditional male underwear in Japan prior to WWII, which was when western styles of underwear was introduced to Japan. Fundoshi is still worn during traditional Japanese festivals (祭り/matsuri).
