"And then Draco did something none of them expected.
He picked his son up like he weighed nothing. The expression on Scorpius' face was one of shock and priceless confusion. Hermione almost laughed until she felt a hand on her lower back steering her in the direction of his office. Then his hand found hers as he led the way.
Just as stunned as Scorpius, she quietly went along with it."

shining rays of sun awoke you in your dorm. sitting up, you groggily rubbed your eyes and yawned sleepily but as realization dawned upon you immediately felt a lot more awake so you jumped out of your bed, the cool floorboards a drastic contrast to your warm feet. it was the day of your birthday.
after putting some makeup on and dressing up, you quickly made your way down to the common room to meet your boyfriend, feeling especially cheerful.
you smiled as soon as you spotted Draco’s blond hair, seeing him sitting on one of the leather couches. you made a beeline for him, and leaned down, draping your arms around his neck from behind and kissing his cheek, which seemed to startle the boy but a smile was quick to make its way onto his face as soon as he realized it was his lovely girlfriend.
Draco stood up and stepped behind the couch and in front of you, snaking his arms around your waist and hugging you tightly. “good morning, baby,” he mumbled into your hair. pulling back and observing your features, “what’s got you in such a good mood?” he asked, smiling.
“hmm, nothing in particular. it’s just a lovely day, isn’t it?” you replied with a mischievous grin, playing along. Draco just looked at you for a couple of seconds lovingly then captured your lips with his, making you sigh into his mouth.
“it truly is. let’s get going, shall we?” he asked, grabbing his bag from the floor next to the couch and already making his way to the exit of the common room.
that was strange. you thought. surely he didn’t forget your birthday. Draco is just a private person and there were so many people in the common room, he’s probably just planning on you when you two are alone. yeah, that’s probably it.
all of your friends have already wished you a happy birthday while you guys were getting ready, so they didn’t say anything besides greeting the pair of you as you sat down beside them in the Great Hall and began your breakfast. nothing seemed out of order.
after you finished you walked to your first lesson, hand in hand with Draco as you chatted mindlessly. suddenly the boy stopped, making you turn back to face him as you felt the tug on your arm. he looked at you for a second, seemingly deep in thought before he asked, “love, what day is it?”
this is it.
“oh, it’s Wednesday,” you beamed, looking up at him, and tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear.
Draco dramatically slapped his forehead, laughing breathily, “merlin, how could i forget,”
“forget what?” you asked still smiling, looking up at him expectantly with wide eyes.
“it’s Wednesday,” he repeated. “my first lesson is divination, not potions,”
“oh,” your smile faltered, but you still did your best to mask up your disappointment.
“i have to get going love, i don’t want to get myself into another detention for being late again. i’ll catch you later, all right?” Draco asked, but didn’t even wait for your response as he kissed you swiftly before turning back and hurriedly going the opposite way.
at this point you started to get a little confused but brushed it off, it was still early in the morning, he still had plenty of occasions to wish you a happy birthday. perhaps he was planning something for later. exactly. it’s probably just a prank, and he’s going to surprise you later on the day.

“so what did Draco get you?” Blaise asked, wiggling his eyebrows as you sat together at the Great Hall. the boy in question had some catching up to do for his next lesson so he wasn’t joining you guys for lunch. you just picked at your food in response, staying silent.
“y/n?” Pansy asked suspiciously after catching on, your expression speaking for you.
“well- he hasn’t acknowledged my birthday yet, to be honest,” you said, nibbling in your bottom lip. it didn’t bother you much, you were a resolved person and didn’t really like having a lot of attention on yourself, it often even made you a bit uncomfortable. but still, your boyfriend at least wishing you a happy birthday would’ve felt nice.
“oh, well, i’m sure he’s planning something for you, he’s probably just dragging it out so it will be a bigger surprise,” Pansy said hesitantly then shared a knowing look with Blaise, which you didn’t fail to catch.
they probably knew something that you didn’t. Draco must’ve told them what he was planning for you but they didn’t want to blow the surprise, so you didn’t push any further on the topic, feeling a little relieved.
after finishing your lunch you continued with your day, having people wishing you a happy birthday here and there while walking through the corridors.

later, as you finished studying at the library and were just about to leave, you found yourself nearly bumping into your boyfriend as you exited.
“darling, i’ve been looking for you,” Draco said excitedly, “come on, i want to show you something,” he then grabbed your hand and led you away quickly. as you two wandered around the castle for the next couple minutes you couldn’t help but wonder if the thing the boy was so eager to show you was that infallible surprise Blaise and Pansy were speaking about during lunch.
Draco led you down in the direction of the dungeons but to your surprise, you overpassed the entrance of the Slytherin common room. just before turning a corner he came to a halt and turned to you. “do you trust me?” the blonde asked with a cheeky grin.
“of course i do,” you pipped back with a loving smile.
“okay, then i need you to close your eyes for me. i’ll lead you, alright?” he asked, already moving behind you and draping his soft hands over your eyes, preventing you from seeing anything, Draco kept his hands there and started gently nudging you forward, letting you take your time and waiting for your slow and cautious steps as he led the way.
after a couple of moments, you felt him stop behind you, prompting you to do the same before gently turning your body 90 degrees to the right.
“ready?”
you nodded eagerly as excitement and a tad bit of relief swirled in your stomach, wondering what would you come face-to-face with when you finally opened your eyes, a big smile lacing your mouth as you thought about what Draco must’ve planned to surprise you with.
when your boyfriend gingerly removed his hands, you squinted, your eyes trying to adjust to the sudden bright light. what you saw was anything but what you expected. you were facing an old oak door. a confused look taking over your features, you slowly turned to look behind you, only to be greeted with a grinning Draco, looking at you expectantly.
“ta-da!” the boy exclaimed, trying to provoke a reaction from you. when he saw that you weren’t quite catching on he sighed, an amused smile playing on his lips.
“read the title, love” the boy hinted, making you look up above the doorframe, finding a shiny rectangular table, reading,
“Draco Lucius Malfoy, Slytherin Prefect”
“oh- OH!” you exclaimed as you finally caught on. the blonde wouldn’t stop rambling about how important it was for him to fulfill the Slytherin prefect post, and it seemed like his hard work had finally paid off. still, you couldn’t help but feel disappointment wash over you, despite feeling truly happy for your boyfriend.
“sweetheart, this is amazing,” you said with a breathy laugh as you turned to Draco and hugged him tightly. he did forget about your birthday, didn’t he?
after pulling back, the boy started rambling about his post and all his duties, and not to mention about how happy he was to have a dorm all to himself, also telling you how it would benefit you too while making your way back to dinner at the Great Hall.
upon entering you saw Pansy and Blaise sitting at their usual spots, so the pair of you instinctively made a beeline for them and sat down across from the two chattering Slytherins.
as Draco started speaking with his best friend Pansy discreetly shot you an expectant look at you. this was her way of silently asking, ‘how are things standing with Draco?’ you just shook your head with a lopsided smile in response, signaling to her that, ‘it’s a lost cause,’
the raven-haired girl gave you an exasperated look before glaring at Draco beside you. Pansy had a calm interior, but you knew for sure that she was fuming on the inside. you knew her too well, and your intuition told you she was up to some funny business so when she looked back at you, you discreetly waved your hand beside your throat in a cutting motion, signaling to her to lay off. you were sure Pansy only had good intentions, but knowing that Draco had surely forgotten your birthday by now you didn’t want to make him uncomfortable and guilty about it, you knew how much he would rile himself up.
but of course, Pansy had no intention of listening to you. she cleared her throat, making the two boys stop talking and shift their attention to the girl.
“soo y/n, how’s your b-“ she started, but quickly closed her mouth when you harshly kicked her leg under the table.
“-blessed day going, sweetheart?” she asked sweetly through gritted teeth, smiling at you sourly.
“it’s going exceptionally well, thank you for asking, Pans,” you quipped back, giving her a stern look.
watching the scene unfold, Draco and Blaise just exchanged some confused looks then resumed their mindless chatter as you dived into your chocolate pudding, making sure to pay close attention to Pansy’s movements and words from then on.
the rest of the dinner went by quickly, and before you knew it, you were dragging Draco through the corridors to the common room, not wanting to give Pansy or Blaise another chance to let him down. your boyfriend forgetting your birthday did sting a tad bit, you had to admit, but the whole thing wasn’t worth making Draco feel as bad about himself as you knew it would.
as you reached the door of your dormitory you turned back to face your boyfriend, seeing him already looking at you lovingly.
“y/n, i’ve been meaning to tell you something for a little while now, i just didn’t want to in front of so many people,” he said, making your eyes widen.
perhaps... there was a chance he didn’t forget?
“yes, Draco?” you asked with a smile on your face, taking a hold of his hand.
“uh, there’s- there’s a little... something there,” he whispered motioning to one of his cheeks, mirroring what he saw on yours.
a frown quickly made its way to your face, and you furrowed your brows as you wiped the spot on your face Draco was motioning to on his with the pad of your fingers.
“oh. um, thanks. it’s just some chocolate pudding,” you explained, laughing in utter embarrassment as you felt your whole face flush to a deep red color.
Draco laughed at your state, then leaned forward to capture your lips with his in a loving kiss, pulling you closer to himself.
after a couple of moments, he stepped back, admiring you, “sleep well gorgeous. i love you very much,” he said while softly stroking your cheek with his thumb.
you couldn’t help but smile as you leaned into his touch, “i love you too,” you whispered and let the boy kiss your cheek gingerly before he turned to leave.
as soon as you closed the door behind yourself, you leaned against it and started rubbing the bridge of your nose with your thumb and pointed finger, tightly closing your eyes.
what an emotional rollercoaster of a day.

the next morning you were standing in front of the charms classroom with Draco, you liked to be a bit early so you two could have seats in the back of the classroom.
“y/n/n!” you heard a sweet voice echo from the end of the corridor, making you turn around and search for the owner of the sound.
you found yourself facing Luna, one of your really good friends, skipping towards you carelessly with a big smile etched on her face.
“i’m so glad i’ve found you, i’ve been looking for you everywhere since yesterday,” the blonde girl sing-songed in her usual dreamy voice as she reached you.
“hey Luna, it’s nice to see you,” you greeted her with a warm smile, which she immediately returned. you stood there smiling at each other before the Ravenclaw finally snapped out of her daydream.
“oh, silly me. before i forget, i got these for you,” and with that, she reached into her robe pocket and pulled out something, “they serve as an excellent nargle-repellent,” she said leaning closer, then opened her palm and held out a pair of earrings, matching the ones she had swinging from her ears.
“oh, Luna! you shouldn’t have!” you exclaimed, with a wide smile, reaching out to examine the beautiful pair of vegetable-shaped jewelry.
“oh, nonsense. happy late birthday dear y/n,” she said and gave you a big hug before adding, “and sorry again for not being able to find you yesterday,”
“oh, don’t worry about it Luna, thank you,” you said with a nervous chuckle, still fidgeting with the earrings in your hands.
“you look pale as a ghost, Draco, maybe you should try eating some chocolate,” Luna observed, making you snap your head up as realization dawned upon you, not daring to look behind you just yet.
shit.
“i’m going to go now, loads of stuff to do. have a wonderful rest of your days,” Luna said softly before skipping away carelessly, leaving you and Draco standing alone in the hallway.
“y/n,” you heard your boyfriend from behind you, making you finally turn around to face him. Luna was right.
Draco stared at you in confusion with a slightly slack jaw, you could’ve sworn you saw the fear in his eyes.
“what does she mean? your birthday’s not in another day,” the blonde said breathily, a nervous chuckle leaving his lips.
“Draco..” you cooed, reaching out to hold his hand in yours, “no, um- it was... yesterday,” you admitted, feeling bad for letting him down, just when you thought you managed to avoid this very situation.
but still, your feelings didn’t compare to Draco’s. he’s never felt this bad in his life before. “so you’re telling me i missed your birthday?” he asked, looking as exasperated as ever.
“well, technically yes but-“
“Merlin, i feel like the biggest asshole in the whole bloody world,” he cut you off, running his hands through his blonde locks, tugging on them.
“i’m the shittiest boyfriend ever,” he exhaled, staring blankly at the floor. before you could say anything Draco grabbed you by your shoulders and pulled you into him, hugging you tightly, while cradling the back of your head with his large hand, his chin resting on top.
“i’m so sorry my precious angel,” he whispered, rocking you back and forth slightly, “i have no idea how i was so stupid to let this happen,”
“Draco,” you tried to say, but your voice came out muffled due to your face being pressed against his chest. “i can’t breathe,”
“oh, sorry,” he quickly loosened his grip, finally letting you move. pulling back, you took his head into your hands and looked deeply into his eyes. he looked like he could almost cry.
“baby, it’s okay,” you said softly, trying to calm the boy down, “i’m not mad at you or anything, you know i don’t like to make a big deal out of my birthdays anyway,” you peered up at Draco, giving him a warm smile.
“what’s today’s date?” he asked after a couple of moments.
“it’s the seventh, i was born in the sixth,”
“but you told me you were born on the eighth,” Draco quipped back, furrowing his eyebrows.
you mimicked his expression, trying to guess why would you do such a thing.
“you did! here, look,” Draco exclaimed, kneeling and beginning to rummage through his bag. “before we started dating we were sending each other notes all the time,” he explained while still scouring through his books.
“one time i asked you about your birthday, and you said it was on the eighth,” that’s weird. you remember that note, and you also could’ve sworn on your life that you’ve written the sixth.
“look!” Draco stood quickly and handed you the note after he found it.
“yes, of course. it’s march 8th.”
it read, or at least it sure as hell looked like it did. as soon as you saw the note it all clicked. your usually neat handwriting was all smudgy and quite hard to read. you remembered your old quill that you had to dismiss because it was leaking so much your writing was impossible to read. you recognized your ‘6’ but anyone else could’ve easily been fooled by the washed-up lettering of the words. evidently, Draco has been already.
laughing at the misunderstanding, you explained the whole situation to Draco, which thankfully made him feel a bit better about himself, but he still felt the need to promise you to make it up to you. and after a lot of convincing and reassuring, you also got him to promise you not to feel bad about the whole situation. it wasn’t his fault after all.
“Draco, it’s all right, really. we’ll just pretend it’s on the eighth and celebrate it then, how does that sound?” this was what made the blond finally relax, it did seem like a good alternative.
you did finally feel relieved once and for all, knowing that your boyfriend didn’t forget your birthday after all. well, at least not intentionally. although knowing how miserable Draco felt about the whole situation you knew you’d always have something to tease him with from now on.
