âWould shadow self be better?â A slight chuckle escaped her as it seemed he was still intent on getting a name. It always seemed that a man couldnât get comfortable around a stranger unless they learned their name. Whether it was the honest name or not, they needed something to relate a face too. âYou still have yet to tell me yours, so I feel holding my name hostage is allowed.â
Katherine was even more amused with his intellect. It wasnât often she found someone that she was able to speak to on the same level. Apparently, this man had been through hell itself too.Â
âSo what ruined your innocence, darling.â A smirk glimmered off the light in the bars to his eyes. Slowly, her smile disintegrated. âIâm assuming it has to deal with the âhadâ in that sentence?â Katherine had figured she discovered the mystery behind his intellect. She hating to assume, but by the looks of it and his description of a way too similar sister to her own character, she figured one had died. Katherine noticed his walls assuming their place. His lovely humor would only demonstrate itself at the time he forgot to cover up his guard.
âI try to keep the storm in Beaconâs Harbor,â laughing before looking to the empty glass in his hand with a nod. âIâll help you take cover if you buy a lady another.âÂ
Derek hummed. âYouâre getting warmer.â He supposed he wasnât being fair, but he liked having anonymity. It was the one reason he was reluctant to leave Beacon City. The Harbor was full of people who knew his name, knew his house, knew The Story, but here was different. Here, he could be a face in a crowd, a forgettable name. âDerek Hale,â he introduced, eyebrows raised. Gauntlet thrown.Â
There was a way about her, something in it that made him think he shouldâve backed off. But he did feel protective over Elena. He just wasnât sure if this feeling of gravity was because he felt that protectiveness transferring to a girl who wore her face, or because he wanted to protect Elena from her. He remained undecided.Â
Leaning close, Derek managed the most fake smirk in his arsenal. One that was so clearly a lie it was deliberate. A message. âA pretty face,â he said, the words dropping from his mouth before he leaned away. âHard to remain innocent when youâve lost enough,â he agreed, not delving further. If she spent enough time around the city sheâd see the house, make the connection somehow. Gossip around town was heavy and thick, especially with Laura kicking up a ruckus. Those Hale siblings, theyâd say. What a shame.Â
He was surprised she was still humoring him. Derek had the money to spare, so he ordered another round for both of them, taking a stool for himself. It seemed to be a long enough conversation to stick around for. âIâll hold you to it.â
