description of me: incredibly average at everything, except math, where i am in fact, below average
nxtrunner:
“No, I’m not here– Please just, uh, ignore me and move on. No big deal.”
“If you’re hiding from something, you’re not doing an awful good job of it.” Okay so not everyone was Sam Moreau, master of running the fuck away and hiding, but still. And plus, Nicky was sniffing at the guys shins despite Sam tugging him back a few times.
A makeshift white knight ~ Sam and Q
Maybe if he closed his eyes tight enough he could be somewhere else. Wrapped up in blankets back at his apartment, his big lump of a dog laying over his lap despite him being far too big to be a lap dog. Or maybe at work, sitting at his desk with his head stuck in a story typing away at his computer with a hazy look of concentration in his eyes. Hell, he'd even settle for being at Beck's listening as he talked about some kind of sports game, nodding his head despite knowing exactly nothing about any kind of sport.
Bumping the volume right up on his music it felt like he was back in France. Back when he was a little kid they'd went there on holiday once, staying with distant cousins. They lived on the seaside and maybe if he shut out the rest of the world he could imagine the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, or his own laughter as the cold water licked at his feet and his cousins ran around behind him, toys waved high and talking about using some kind of tech to build the best sandcastle in the whole wide world.
Doing neither of these things was helping the situation though. Nick still pulled on the leash, nearly tugging Sam with him, and his growls were loud enough to still be heard over Sam's soft, slow music. No matter what he was still stuck outside his own building, keys long lost when he was practically cornered by a woman and a man who looked a lot like they wanted everything he owned in the parking lot out back. He wasn't cut out for here, Night City, the beaches back where he so desperately wanted to call home were more his speed. Or maybe becoming a hermit and only going outside to buy food and such would be even better. He'd catch up on every tv show and movie imaginable, thats for sure. And he wouldn't be lonely, he had a dog, he'd be fine.
If he makes it out of this alive he's renewing his tv subscription and staying firmly planted on his couch forever.
"Im sure we can talk this out? I've got money, I could give you if if you leave me alone?"

xavierkelada:
The heavy downpour did nothing to dissipate the crowd in the streets; the city had turned into fire and rain and blood. Angry flames licking the air, screams and shouts threatening to split his eardrums, the distinctive smell of smoke and gasoline—Xavier felt a fleeting moment of déjà vu at the sight. This was—hell, this right here was a battlefield. This was war, and he hadn’t seen anything like it in his five years as the citizen of Night City. Sure, there were the occasional demonstrations and barricades and the blaring sound of sirens as C-SWATs gunned down psychos, but nothing had been as bad as these riots. All of his scheduled assignments had been cancelled for today. Nobody dared to leave the safety of their houses during times like this—well, nobody except him, apparently.
Honestly, Xav hadn’t expected the situation to spiral out of control so soon. Long gone were the peaceful marches he had seen when he left for his therapy session earlier. They had already shut down the maglev rails, forcing him to find his way back home on foot. The commotion was undoubtedly a gravely dangerous one, air taut with high-strung tension; then again, Xavier had never excelled at being a civilian.
Thus he navigated through the chaos-ridden city, skillfully evading violent fights and choosing the darkest of shadows to walk in like the veteran he was. His wolfdog definitely garnered glances, but the sheer size of her was more than enough to scare off any unwanted attention. The wounded and the dead lay alike on the ground, and a small part of him—no, a large part of him—desperately wished to help. Yet Xavier schooled his features to remain dispassionate. It wouldn’t be a wise move; he had no weapons apart from a pistol and a switchblade.Â
Just then, Micah emitted a low growl. His calm expression immediately turned wary. Judging from the way they were hiding in the dark and not out in the streets—just like him—, Xav thought it unlikely that the figure had malicious intent. But he couldn’t afford to let his guard down, could he?
“I know you’re there,” he called out, quiet but firm. Micah bared her teeth.Â
When he first left work there were fires and fighting and it was so loud. Oh my god it was loud. For someone as flighty and nervous as Sam even one person yelling was enough to send him spiralling into  fight or flight. Though it was always flight in his case. This many people raising their voices, putting their hands on him to shove him? There were tears in his eyes already, they just spilled over any time he was pushed. Nick wasn't any better, pressing close to him and trying to shove him towards what he thought was safety. Which usually was, but today even the back alleys were full of fires and other people.
It was the deaths that really got to him, he'd nearly stepped on something earlier, and when he looked down it was a hand, a real life human hand, it didn't even have an arm attached. It was like someone had sliced it clean off. The thought alone was enough to bring bile up his though, the mental picture was going to haunt him for far too long.
Times like these he wished he was more. More than just little Sammy. He wanted to be stronger, to be able to protect himself. Or even to be able to leave the house without clinging to Nick's leash tight enough that his human knuckles were white with the strain.
That desire was only amplified as he ducked into a dimly lit alley, crouching down and eventually sitting just a bit behind one of the bins. There was no way he'd get home unscaved, the least he could do is sit and think of a valid strategy - or at least another way home.
With his knees pulled up to his chest, Sam's arm wraps around Nick's neck, pulling him in close while the dog whines in what Sam assumes in confusion. He didn't dare speak, lest someone come and try to mug him or somethng, so he just shushed the dog, wrapping his fingers around his collar tightly.
The voice leads to widened eyes and Sam scrambling to his feat, ready to run away. He wouldn't have replied, just ran, but Nick's barking meant he couldn't bullshit his way out of this. "Uh...nope...no ones here."

43 | Dexter & Open
runner-dex:
The world was on fire. He could smell it, thick and utterly disgusting. Melting plastic as if someone was going around torching cyberlimbs in some morbid bonfire. For all Dexter knew they could be. It was dark he knew that much, didn’t need to check for an audio response for the exact time—he could feel the chill biting at him through thin drab clothes. Could feel the lack of sunlight, only even during the day when ventured beyond the confines of his apartment the warmth of the sun was bleak. Like there was a permanent smog over the city, buildings growing too tall to let the light stream down onto the streets or perhaps he just always walked in the shade. He had no idea.
Dexter knew that he’d get into trouble later though he’d left the damnable headgear that aided him behind, it was broken anyway, replacing the small plugs on either side of his head with realskinn coated covers. Left his cane behind too, he hated it. No, Dexter was counting his moderately paced steps with precision he knew exactly when to turn—43, 44, 45, his foot edged to the left hands finding the smooth familiar wall. Cold beneath his fingertips and slick, had it been raining earlier?
He pushed past those thoughts and carried on, the never ending count continuing silently in his head this path was well walked and it only led to his nearest convenience store. For each touchable landmark the count reset back to zero, it was a well-rehearsed and well-oiled dance. Eventually Dexter came across the store he’d been hunting after, the store owner seemed alarmed he could hear her shuffle from around the counter that purr of a voice smooth and melodic followed.
“Dex ain’t you seen the news?”
He gave a roll of his shoulders and pushed past her, hands finding the same candy bars that he always bought. Tossed a few eurodollars onto the counter as he groped his way out of the store. Frustrated that she’d knocked him out of sync. The woman was an exotic, he knew that much even if he couldn’t see her, he’d heard some kids whispering in her store once about it. He tried to piece together the visuals of the exotics he’d seen before and in his mind she looked like a cross between a humanoid cat and an alien. He was wrong on both accounts. Dexter never asked her not even on the occasional days that he just sat in her store eating no doubt a large part of her stock.
He silently wondered what she meant, he never checked the newscasts he found them dull and irritating. Their voices were nothing but noise to him. Perhaps it had something to do with the world being on fire, a slight subtle fleeting smile curved his lips and then it was gone. The world was always burning down here in the south so that was hardly newsworthy.
Dex had been lost in thought and mis-counted, turned too early and went down an unfamiliar path. He realized his mistake, the wall here wasn’t smooth it was covered in the gritty texture of graffiti, torn posters and grime, he turned with the intention of heading back onto the main road. Out of the narrow alley. He turned straight into them, he didn’t know how many there were, just that he didn’t have a hope in hell not without his headgear.
Fuck.
Perhaps Athena was right he thought grimly in those sparing seconds as he felt their warmth draw closer, could hear the faint leering as if they were nothing but dogs salivating over their prey. Perhaps he shouldn’t be so stubborn. A small fistful of eurodollars and a single candy bar—he’d already eaten the other. That didn’t seem like enough to satiate these men, women and Dex was reluctant to hand them over. Still he didn’t want to be pulped in some dark alleyway, wanted to go out in a burst of flames and code. To finally have the honour of someone being fast enough to catch him before he broke through their firewalls and turned them into nothing more than vegetables.
He was a runner alright, through and through, he lived for the thrill of it as much as he depended on it to pay the bills. Dex didn’t say anything, there was nothing to say, not even as one of them swung their fist at him—they were heavier than him, a fair deal of strength behind the punch. The fist winded him, he was doubled over coughing as if a bout of quick firing flu had caught him.
“You ain’t gonna fight?”
Dexter gritted his teeth if he knew where his opponent was he’d have curled his hands into the front of their attire pulled them down to the ground, where they belonged. But he was lost.
“C’mon we know you’ve got money, all we want.”
Liar, he thought if that had been all they wanted they’d have taken it already. He could hear one of them mutter something and then there was a cackle of laughter, one of them had noticed his spaced out stare that didn’t quite meet the sources of the voices squarely on the face. The faint fear that he was going to die in this alleyway held his eyes wide, he wondered if they thought he was high—better that way. They got bored of the game, or one of them did and Dexter was pulled into a sharp grip held there as they raided his pitiful pockets. He struggled but they only restrained him tighter, the cool touch of a cyberlimb prickled the hairs on his arm. Back pressed against that gritty wall. He was screwed.
It was times like these that Sam was endlessly grateful that he listens to the news. It was a side effect from wanting to keep up to date with everything ,well that and combined with needing to for his job as well as a curiosity complex that spanned his entire being.Usually it did little more than give him sources for articles to send in to his boss, and if he wrote it up and sent it in early enough he was usually praised for getting to the big story before the others. The bonus payment he got from those times were enough to keep him living somewhat comfortably, and Nicky living in luxury.
The news has never saved his life before, not like its practically done today. It gave him enough of a warning to keep him away from the main streets that the riots were on, he didn't dare go into the back streets, figuring he'd end up getting himself in trouble that he so desperately avoided. Or if not trouble like that then Nick would end up standing on something and hurting his paw or some shit like that. Something would happen anyway, was what he was trying to get at. Â
The riots were something he'd pretty much never even think of going near, if they were getting all funny about all that they were he dreads to think what they'd do to a skinny looking kid with a metal arm. Big scary dog or not he'd probably end up in one of the fires they were setting. Fires that he could smell from here. He just felt bad for Nicky, at least Sam could cover his nose, he was stuck smelling everything.
Honestly, he just wanted to run home to the safety of his living room, curl up and put anything but the news channels on, but that wasn't going to be an option for another twenty minutes at least. Remind him why does he decide to walk to work every day?
He's not paying an awful lot of attention to his surroundings, Nicky would do something if someone came too close or he felt something was off. This whole time he's been walking perfectly fine next to Sam, his leash loose enough that he practically didn't need one right then. Or it was loose. Till there was yelling that was just getting louder and louder.
He's not one for confrontation, exactly the opposite in fact. At one point he had a badge saying 'hugs not guns' till a co-worker laughed at it and he took it off and now has lost it god knows where. He's far from a hero too, a coward is more his speed. But letting someone get pummled to what even be death (or worse, the inbetween life and death stage he was once stuck at) wasn't something he was about to let happen.
Nick looked scary enough, he was a big dog, had some -cheap- but still protective bits of armor on him. Sam half joked that he was his little white knight sometimes. A few barks from him and the guys seemed to slowly stop what they were doing. He wouldn't embarass himself by telling them to get lost or something, he himself wasn't scary enough for that, but he did stand there, tilting his head away as the people yelled more insults, but seemed content enough to just walk away from the situation. Apparently going for 'that weird guy with the dog' wasn't worth it for them.
"Uhm...Hi? I ugh...I should have done more but im not really that scary..." He fakes a laugh, sounding more unconfortable than the relaxed style he was going for. His hand drifts down to the top of the dogs head, fingers curling in his fur and scratching the back of his neck with his free hand. "Want any help, Mr?"
electric city | catalina & open
The streets were on fire, and Catalina could hardly revel in it all. Perhaps she would have when she was eighteen and wild and vicious with a thirst for reckless destruction, but now? Now she was just trying to do her fucking job. Oh, she loved danger, truly. She loved the adrenaline, the thrill that came with dodging punches and dashing through alleyways, but these riots were something even she knew not to fuck with.
But she’d been dispatched to cover the chaos ruling Night City, and armed with a inconspicuous camera that looked more like a phone, she did just that. Dressed in dark clothing instead of the flashy attire she normally liked to wear, she darted between civilians shattering glass windows and hurling flaming objects through the air, her screen catching every moment of it. Asking for an interview would practically be a death sentence; everyone was volatile, terrified, angry. The aftermath would be better for that.
She turned her camera towards an altercation between cops and protester, curses mixing with the shots ringing through the air. God, she’d always hated the cops—-
Her train of thought was cut short when someone snatched the device out of her hands, and another shoved her towards the ground, aiming a kick towards her stomach. Instinct kicked in, and she quickly scrambled to her feet, punching her attacker in the face before kneeing him in the crotch and taking off after the thief. “Get the fuck back here!” she yelled, tearing down the street, weaving through the mess of fights and flames, paying no heed to who she shoved past in order to get through.Â
catalinaximenas:
Terrified. Now there was a good word for what he was feeling right then. He'd never been afraid of fire - its fine if you control it and what not, frankly he'd never really been around a fire in the first place, especially not ones as big as the ones only a few meters away from him. But he was kinda feeling that he would have a fear of fire after today, especially if he got shoved any closer than he was now.
No one cared right now, they were all yelling loud enough to make Sam cringe, either encouraging each other or screaming for it all to stop. If he was a slightly braver man he'd be doing the latter. It wouldn't make a difference, not in the long run, but maybe it would have been a personal victory for himself. But he was not a brave man, far from it. All Sam was trying to do was duck and weave through everyone to get out of the crowd. It would have been easier to do had he been only himself, and didn't have a hulk of a dog following him.
The woman yelling and running wouldn't have been anything to him, just another personal to ignore and move out of the way off. Or she would have been if she wasn't heading straight for the gap between man and dog where a knee height leash extended between them. Turning his body, Sam reaches out an arm to stop her from going flying over the leash.Â
"Woah, hey...Sorry, you were gonna face plant the ground there.."
I’ll swallow my blood before I swallow my pride.
