while i am in the gracerocky yaoi trenches on the side of gracerocky yaoi i do have to admit i can't totally get behind the "rocky is an insanely horny perverted freak who's betraying all those eridian social taboos to seduce grace" jokes, because speaking as someone with abandonment issues as a result of far less intense periods of isolation it really does warp your sense of self worth into an all-consuming hunger that's utterly focused on ensuring that nobody else has a reason to ever leave you, no matter how much of your dignity you have to sacrifice in exchange. at the end of the day i am defending the emotions of a fictional alien rock spider and it's truly not that serious, but i do think that it's easy to overlook that rocky's instances of bizarre, boundaryless behaviour are literal naked desperation to not be abandoned again by the one chance at connection he still has. like all i'm saying is that if he were human and we translated the eating scene to an equivalent social taboo i think it'd be a lot more upsettingly obvious.

i won't deny that i've laughed at a "grace is going to realise that rocky's a weapons grade Freak when they get to erid" post or two in my time but i'm gonna be real i think grace might be more concerned about his best friend's pattern of being incapable of seeing himself as worthy of any quality of life or existential value whatsoever if there's even the slightest chance that it would mean refusing grace anything at all

Stratt is so much meaner in the book, when she tells Grace he's going on the mission, and I love it. It's so effective. Because Stratt isn't mean. Not to anyone else. She's brusque and ruthless, but she often chooses to be kind, when she can afford to be. She's not cruel.

Except in this one scene. She tears Grace apart, she lies to him to make it hurt more, because she's furious with him. Because he's disappointed her so profoundly. Because he couldn't do the right thing, and now she has to tear her heart out of her chest to do it for him. If he had only been brave enough to do the right thing, she could have said goodbye. Her last memory of her best friend could have been of somber solidarity, of pride in their shared purpose. But no. And now she has to live with the memory of him begging her for his life instead. She has to remember telling him no.

Isekai but the teenage boy wakes up to find himself sporadically occupying the body of a little old lady who appears to be the protagonist of a series of cozy murder mysteries where everyone in her quaint seaside town keeps getting violently and thematically killed.

Whilst wearing the guise of retired widow Mrs. Butterwell, Hideki must use all of his knowledge of genre and structure to try and prevent these murders before they can happen, because quite frankly that seems easier than actually solving the murders (he's not great at puzzles). He's been spending a lot of time talking to people around town to try and solve their various crises just to cover his bases too. It's really opened his eyes to the importance of community.

one of the many things that get me about the scene where grace is held down and drugged is the face that Stratt makes after she says ‘yeah, he’s running’.

she kind of looks down and nods to herself, like yeah, he’s running. Of course he’s running.

She knows him too well to have believed fully that he wouldn’t run, but some selfish part of her still hoped that he would go willingly. That he wouldn’t make this harder. That she wouldn’t need to have his blood on her hands.

But that part of her died screaming along with the part of Grace that still believed she would save him. Fate made a fool of them both.

“andy weir provided a packet to the creature shop that was like a packet of eridian biology and stuff but there wasn’t much about eridian culture or eridian sociology and i made a bunch of choices going in because i just needed to have like a ‘who am i?’ right?

[…] and i made a decision that rocky’s species, that eridians are really social animals that in fact are like a beehive or a pod of dolphins - it’s a unique and really integrated ecosystem of everybody doing their [specific] part. and the fact that rocky had to fly that ship for about 45 years - longer than grace has been alive, i wanna point that out - he’s been alone on that ship, having to run that by himself and- ryan and i would talk about that, one day we sat down and he was like “so what’s the movie from rocky’s perspective?” and i was like “oh it’s like ‘alien’, […] like he’s in a ‘contagion’ movie by himself and he has no idea what’s going on.”

he’s basically in castaway by himself which of course ryan is too but like, one reason why we never cut to the past of rocky is like, i think it was really horrifying! i don’t think rocky has slept in however many years and so a thing i was really struggling with is this idea of like “rocky must watch sleep” because how do you make that a need as opposed to like, a cute idea? and i just had to make the decision that […] he has a lot of unprocessed trauma around the things that he doesn’t understand and how much he is blaming himself because he’s the guy who fixes, he’s the guy who fixes and there was something really freeing about deciding that rocky was a deeply emotional, deeply anxious, deeply horrified person - being - that is trying to move through that in some way and how that affects the early scenes with him until there’s a point in the story where you can see we’ve physically softened rocky’s behaviour, because he’s finally feeling more safe and ok but all of that lore, all of that information [was essential].

i also decided, this is just a small nerdy thing, that there was actually some of his family, was on that ship too.”

The reason endermen don’t like it when you look at them is because they communicate telepathically with one another by locking eyes! Humans are absolutely not designed to do this so when we look at them we are accidentally projecting all of our thoughts into them at the same time and it hurts :(
