This is Julodimorpha bakewelli, a species of jewel beetle found in Australia. These innocuous looking insects are important but threatened because of a misdirected evolutionary desire: the males are intimately attracted to discarded brown beer bottles, which strongly resemble the most desirable, biggest, shiniest and bumpiest female imaginable. As a result the males pile on and end up dying of dehydration in the hot sun, desperately attempting to mate with the inanimate containers in vain. (at The Field Museum)
