At this point, if you really don’t see the need for these basic gun control laws, I don’t fucking know what to tell you because you obviously just don’t care. Someone should not easily be able to get their hands on a military style assault weapon. Someone shouldn’t be able to get one at all, but let’s at least start with making it very difficult to get. I blame the Republicans who allow the NRA to rule them, but I also blame the gun culture that has allowed the NRA to gain so much power. But hey, land of the free, home of the brave, right? People are free to murder, and other people are forced to be brave in the face of constant mass shootings.

We all ready do have “basic gun control laws,” and I urge you to look them up for yourself. The BATFE and FBI are both great resources for getting federal regulations, and I would also suggest you look up your state’s legislation. We do care, and many of the gun regulations that have been implemented, have done nothing to keep people safe, or curve the gun violence.

First off, have you ever undergone the process to purchase any firearm? The military style assault weapons have been banned and highly regulated by the BATFE since the middle 1980′s under what became known as the Hughes amendment and NFA. This is why I suggest you actually read what the laws are before you say something for or against them. 

I blame the Republicans who allow the NRA to rule them, but I also blame the gun culture that has allowed the NRA to gain so much power.

You do realize that there are democrats who support gun rights?The NRA’s power comes from the people who support them (mind you the NRA’s membership is only 5% of the representative gun owner community), so it’s a organisation run by the people for the people.

Yes it is the land of the free. We have our Bill of Rights in there guaranteeing the people the right to keep and bear arms. Our homicide rate is is the lowest it’s been in 20+ years, and the lowest it’s been since 1953. Also mass shootings happen primarily in gun free zones, a product of gun control.

Yesterday the U.S. Senate voted on 4 pieces of gun control legislation.

Am I surprised by the outcome of that vote? No.

Am I disgusted? You bet.

And yesterday, I was called “un-American piece of shit” for voicing that opinion. I was called an “un-American piece of shit” because I’m angry the Senate once again voted against legislation that would restrict and prevent the ability of private citizens and known/suspected terrorists from being able to purchase military grade weapons online, in gun stores, and at gun shows.

I’ve had people come at me for my opinions before. But I have NEVER had someone attack me like that. And as hard as I’ve tried to ignore those words and the rest of the comment that was left on my blog before I deleted it and blocked the person, I can’t. Those words have stuck to me like gum on my shoe. And if you were wondering, those words fucking hurt.

I don’t want to take away your right to own a gun for the purposes of protection or hunting. What I want is for Congress and the Senate stand up to the NRA and say enough is enough. I want them to close the loopholes that give people such easy access to military grade weapons. There is absolutely no need for a private citizen in the United States to own an automatic assault weapon. ABSOLUTELY NO NEED. You don’t need an AR-15 to go deer hunting, duck hunting, or any kind of game hunting for that matter. And you sure as hell don’t need an AR-15 in your home to protect ourself. A handgun, sure… but a military automatic assault rifle… not necessary.

The PULSE nightclub shooting hit way too close to home. I am not a member of the LGBTQ community, I am an ally. I know and have a lot of amazing people in my life who are a part of the LGBTQ community, and I know a lot of people who live and work in the Orlando area. It could have been one of my friends who lost their life last week. But I was incredibly fortunate that every single person I know in Orlando was unharmed. Families and friends of 49 people were not so fortunate. But next time something like this happens - because lets face it, until something changes mass shootings will continue to happen - I might not be so fortunate. The next time a mass shooting happens, regardless of the motivations behind it, it could be one of my friends who was caught in the crossfire. It could be one of my family members. Hell it could be me. That is an absolutely terrifying realization to deal with.

I’ve been living in this constant state of anxiousness for years because mass shootings keep happening and the NRA keeps winning. What happened at PULSE last week was my breaking point. Yes we can choose to live in fear, or we can choose to not live in fear. But I don’t know how I can live without fear when I know that almost anyone can purchase a military grade weapon and go on a shooting rampage. I don’t know how I can live without fear knowing that the next time a mass shooting occurs, I could be the one finding out a friend or family member was killed. Or god forbid, I could be in the middle of it. When I go out now, whether it’s to work, a sporting event, a concert, the grocery store, or to the movies with friends, I am constantly thinking about escape plans. If I’m not right in the middle of open gun fire, where and how can I escape to safety? If I can’t escape, where and how could I try to protect myself? Nobody should have to live like that. Nobody.

I will never understand the need to own a gun - whether for protection or for hunting. But if you want to own a gun for the purpose of protection, that’s your choice. I’m not trying, nor do I want, to take away your right to protect yourself. What I want is for easy access to military grade weapons to be taken away from private civilians and people who are known/suspected terrorists. Whether you agree with me or not, I don’t really care. But I’m angry and I’m scared. You don’t get to tell me how to feel. You don’t get to tell me I’m being irrational. You don’t get to accuse me of wanting to take away your right to own a gun. And you sure as hell have no right to attack me and call me “an un-American piece of shit” because I voiced how I feel about the current situation, and because you don’t agree with me.

There are no loopholes, military grade weapons are weapons that have been used by the military, the AR-15 is not a military grade firearm, and fully automatic firearms have been heavily regulated since 1980′s. I’m going to be saying this a lot here, but read the god damn laws @syntoniserlesonstatique14. Please it isn’t hard to actually look this up, and would make better use of the internet. 

You don’t need an AR-15 to go deer hunting, duck hunting, or any kind of game hunting for that matter. 

Yes people go hunting with these style of firearms. I can get an AR-15 style rifle chambered in 300 blackout and use it to hunt deer or any other game like that. I can also use my AR-15 chambered in 5.56x45 NATO and hunt boar like many people in southern states do. 

And you sure as hell don’t need an AR-15 in your home to protect yourself.

If you aren’t going to be there in my time of need for protection, then you have no say in what I use to protect myself. Furthermore, the rooftop Koreans during the LA  riots would say otherwise, same with many people in Ferguson.

Again simple research would have told you this.

Really a mass shooting hit home for you? A mass shooting really hit my home, my beloved university on Valentines day in 2008. You know what, I do not blame the gun that was used (a shotgun by the way), or the fact that guns were used. I blame people who supported gun control laws and passed gun control laws that forced those people to be disarmed. 

I’m not trying, nor do I want, to take away your right to protect yourself. What I want is for easy access to military grade weapons to be taken away from private civilians and people who are known/suspected terrorists.

One you just advocated for the complete opposite. Secondarily, what you’re talking about is stripping away the rights of US citizens without due process. Imagine doing that for any other right, and tell me if you still support it.
